Killing, Letting Die, And The Alleged Necessity Of Military Intervention, Laurie Calhoun
Killing, Letting Die, And The Alleged Necessity Of Military Intervention, Laurie Calhoun
Peace and Conflict Studies
Recent international developments have introduced the possibility of war waged on behalf of people unable to defend themselves, and when the attacking parties’ interests appear not to be at stake. Are purely military forms of “humanitarian intervention” sometimes morally required? Can such military missions be reconciled with the widely held belief in the moral distinction between killing and letting die? In exploring these questions, the two dominant paradigms in writing about war are considered: just war theory and utilitarianism. The moral centrality of intentions emerges through an explanation of the distinction often made between natural and man-made catastrophe. Ultimately, the …

Adjustment Personality Trait And The Process Of Grieving Among Parents Who Have Had Children Die Of Sids, Agnes Melissa Ibanez
Adjustment Personality Trait And The Process Of Grieving Among Parents Who Have Had Children Die Of Sids, Agnes Melissa Ibanez
Student Work
The research examines emotional adjustment personality trait as related to intensity of grief experienced by parents who have had a child die of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) neuroticism scale measured emotional adjustment trait, and Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS) measured grief intensity. Thirty-three participants from 18 states were recruited via SIDS Alliance and SIDS Network websites. Results supported the hypothesis that there is a direct significant correlation between emotional adjustment and grief experiences. Other results showed that grief intensity was inversely correlated with years since child’s death, conscientiousness, and extraversion. Conscientiousness was found to directly …

Do Teacher Opinion Leaders Impact Other Teachers, Annette Eyman
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were identified opinion leaders among teachers and how those opinion leaders may have influenced teachers’ acceptance levels of the standards and assessment implementation for the language arts curriculum. Three phases of research were conducted. Twenty-four secondary language arts teachers and 109 elementary classroom teachers in the Papillion-LaVista School District were first surveyed to determine their level of acceptance of the standards and assessments for language arts. Each of the respondents was then asked to identify the opinion leaders, or those they turn to and trust regarding the standards and assessment …

Who Are The Complaint-Prone Officers?: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Police Officers' Attributes, Arrest Activity, Assignment, And Citizens' Complaints About Excessive Force, Steven G. Brandl, Meghan S. Stroshine, James Frank
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
This article identifies the characteristics of police officers (officers’ background attributes, arrest activity, and assignment) who most frequently receive complaints from citizens regarding the use of excessive force. The data for the study were obtained from a large mid-western municipal police department. The results show that arrest activity, officer age, and officer gender are most strongly related to the receipt of citizen’s complaints about excessive force and differentiate high-complaint officers from low-complaint officers. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Deviant Behavior And Victimization Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kevin A. Yoder, Ana Mari Cauce, Matt Paradise
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This study used a high-risk population of runaway and homeless adolescents to investigate the effects of history of caretaker abuse and deviant subsistence strategies on victimization among adolescents. Based on a multisite sample of 974 homeless and runaway adolescents, logistic regression models were used first to examine factors predicting involvement in sexual and nonsexual deviant subsistence strategies and then to investigate the effects of deviant subsistence strategies on physical and sexual victimization when adolescents were on the streets. Results indicated that when controlling for all other factors, including histories of physical and sexual maltreatment in families of origin, street behaviors, …

Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta Coles
Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta Coles
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
This article examines Clinton’s rhetorical strategy for creating a legacy in light of the imminent end of his second and final term as president. By examining Clinton’s public discourse from 1997 to 1999, with special attention to the period from September 1998 to June 1999, this article argues that Clinton used the frame of his race initiative to centripetally incorporate varied events and policies to redefine and bolster his legacy in the aftermath of scandal and political polarity. Specifically, President Clinton, with an eye on the legacy of the president and the identity of the Democratic Party, gathered the war …
