Where Did They Come From? A Tribute To Shirley N. Wood, Jo Ann Rhodes Jan 2001

Where Did They Come From? A Tribute To Shirley N. Wood, Jo Ann Rhodes

The Christian Librarian

The contributions of people like Shirley Wood, one of the founders of the Association of Christian Librarians, often go unnoticed due to the selflessness of their service. It is good to be reminded once in a while that what we take for granted in our 21st century library work was at one time the result of some former librarian's creativity. In the Christian library community, an individual's contributions are frequently done quietly, which is the way it should be if one wished to serve in the Scriptural way of not calling attention to oneself or one's service. Shirley Wood expended …

The Police Officer As Survivor: The Psychological Impact Of Exposure To Death In Contemporary Urban Policing, Vincent E. Henry Jan 2001

The Police Officer As Survivor: The Psychological Impact Of Exposure To Death In Contemporary Urban Policing, Vincent E. Henry

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

All human encounters with death, whether they involve a casual contact with the death of another person or the realistic threat of one's own demise, have important psychological consequences that result in new modes of adaptation, thought and feeling. In the course of their duties, contemporary urban police officers frequently encounter the deaths of others and some participate in mortal combat situations that credibly threaten their own lives. The psychological dimensions of police officers' professional exposures to the deaths of others are to a large extent shaped by the specific duties and responsibilities prescribed by their formal task environment, while …

Comparing Three Spatial Cluster Tests From Rare To Common Spatial Events, Ge Lin Jan 2001

Comparing Three Spatial Cluster Tests From Rare To Common Spatial Events, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In the past few years, several new tests for spatial clustering have been proposed. With ever increasing capability of GIS and wider availability of spatial statistic functions, spatial analysts are likely to face challenge of properly using these tests. Seemingly gaps also exist between the development of new tests and follow up evaluations against various assumptions. In this research note, I compare three cluster tests along a range of distribution from rare to common spatial events. The results not only revealed sensitive data feature that each test is designed to detect, but also clarified the interpretation based on the nature …

Environment And Trade: A Review Of Issues And Methods, Haixiao Huang, Walter C. Labys Jan 2001

Environment And Trade: A Review Of Issues And Methods, Haixiao Huang, Walter C. Labys

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This survey attempts to provide an overview of the major issues concerning economic interactions between environmental and trade policies. Such a review is necessary because of the pressure that the accelerated pace of globalisation is placing on environment and trade. Not only is world trade increasing rapidly but global industrialisation related to trade has spawned severe environmental degradation. As a consequence, growing numbers of researchers have attempted to analyse the linkages between these areas. This study attempts to provide a perspective on received and future research by employing a dual approach economic studies of the major environmental and trade issues …

Heterogeneity And Chaotic Dynamics Incommodity Markets, Catherine Kyrtsou, Walter Labys, Michael Terraza Jan 2001

Heterogeneity And Chaotic Dynamics Incommodity Markets, Catherine Kyrtsou, Walter Labys, Michael Terraza

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The nonlinear testing and modeling of economic and financial time series has increased substantially in recent years, enabling us to better understand market and price behavior, risk and the formation of expectations. Such tests have also been applied to commodity market behavior, providing evidence of heteroskedasticity, chaos, long memory, cyclicity, etc. More recently the evaluation of empirical financial models suggests that chaotic structure in asset prices can result from the heterogeneity of trader’s expectations. The present evaluation of futures price behavior confirms that the resulting price movements can be random, suggesting noisy chaotic behavior. The root cause of this behavior …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

Religions United in Action for Community (RUAC) was an interfaith ministerial group organized in 1969 to address social issues in St. Petersburg such as school desegregation, busing, health care, and community displacement resulting from the construction of Interstate 275. Other concerns included casino gambling, pornography, and the emerging Moral Majority movement. The papers were donated by Rabbi David Susskind, the first rabbi of the Congregation of Liberal Judaism in Orlando, and longtime rabbi at Temple Beth-El in St. Petersburg. This collection consists of five document boxes containing organizational records covering the years from 1969 through 1981. Materials occupy 2.25 linear …

Poverty, Democracy And Public Libraries, Kathleen De La Peña Mccook

School of Information Faculty Publications

A central feature of public librarianship in the United States is that librarians have worked to develop aclimate of openness by defining library policies to create an institution where all are welcome. In 1990 the American Library Association adopted the policy, “Library Services for the Poor,” in which it is stated , “it is crucial that libraries recognize their role in enabling poor people to participate fully in a democraticsociety, by utilizing a wide variety of available resources and strategies.” ( ALA Handbook of Organization , 1999-2000, policy 61). This policy was adopted because there had been a shifting level …

An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting Jan 2001

An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting

Faculty Publications

This paper explores issues of psychological plausibility in modeling natural language understanding within Soar, a symbolic cognitive model. It focuses on constructing syntactic and semantic representations in simulated real time, with particular emphasis on word sense disambiguation (WSD). We discuss (i) what level of WSD should be modeled and (ii) how to use resources such as WordNet to inform these models. A preliminary model of coarse-grained WSD is included to show how syntactic, semantic, and other knowledge sources interact in Soar. Finally, we explore issues of interleaving, learning, and integrating other WSD approaches with Soar's native model of learning.

Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington Jan 2001

Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

Previous psycholinguistic research into the English vocalic system suggest that the vowel alternations [ei-re, ii-£, ai-1, ow- a, u"-A], termed SPELLING RULE ALTERNATIONS, are psychologically significant for English speakers, in that they can influence the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. In this paper, the influence of these salient alternations on nonce words and neologisms is assessed. The effect of su1face analogy on the pronunciation of novel words is also examined. Surface analogy may be defined as the influence exerted by the fu lly specified surface forms of the morphemic relatives of a word. It assumes that all allomorphs of a given …

Linguistic Gender Is Related To Psychological Gender: The Case Of Chinese Characters, Yuk-Yue Tong, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ho-Ying Fu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Past research (Ervin, 1972; Konishi, 1993) suggests that a noun's linguistic gender is not just an arbitrary, semantically-empty linguistic category. Rather it may connote masculine or feminine properties, and thus can subtly influence responses to the noun and its referent. The present study extended this research by exploring how gendered radicals of nonsense Chinese characters might affect the characters' connotations. The results showed that when an unfamiliar Chinese character is encountered, meaning interpretation can be affected by the meaning of the radicals. Moreover, since gendered Chinese radicals are linked to share representations of psychological gender, such as representation may then …

Mass Media Ethics Vs. Ethnicity : The Cuban American National Foundation's Battle With The Miami Herald, Michelle M. Cobas Jan 2001

Mass Media Ethics Vs. Ethnicity : The Cuban American National Foundation's Battle With The Miami Herald, Michelle M. Cobas

LSU Master's Theses

In 1992, a prominent Cuban-American organization, the Cuban American National Foundation, launched a full-scale campaign against the Miami Herald following an editorial against the Cuban Democracy Act, sponsored by Congressman Robert Torricelli, (D-NJ). The bill, which the Foundation endorsed and helped craft, was aimed at tightening the loopholes on the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Two men-CANF Chairman Jorge Mas Canosa and Herald publisher David Lawrence-represented opposing sides of the feud. CANF galvanized the exile community to support its side of the debate. The Herald used its opinion and editorial pages to argue against Mas's charges that the newspaper attacked the …

Commentary: Essential Programs And Services Model, Denison Gallaudet, Henry R. Sciopone, Thomas Scott, Robert B. Kautz, Roger Shaw, Mark Eastman, Richard A. Lyons, Bob Hasson

Maine Policy Review

To further discussion about the Essential Programs and Services (EPS) model for funding public education in Maine, Maine Policy Review asked eight superintendents—representing districts across the state— to provide their views. We also asked each to discuss the needs of his district and whether additional state policy options were necessary to tackle the most pressing issues. The districts represented by these superintendents are a cross section of urban and rural high-receivers and low-receivers. Still, several commonalities emerge: the need for a state commitment that does not wax and wane with the business cycle; the urgency of professional development for new …

Tellin' It Like It Is: Disempowerment And Marginalization Of First-Generation, Low-Income College Students: A Participatory Research, Charlene P. Lobo

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the origins and outcomes of disempowerment and marginalization in five first-generation, low-income college students who were participants in Student Support Services, a federally funded TRIO program at a large urban commuter state university. Using dialogic introspection and participatory research, the participants reflected on their experiences in the areas of disempowerment, marginalization, educational equity, oppression and the needs and concerns of first-generation low-income students. Generative themes fell into three areas: creating conditions for learning; silencing the voice; and resistance, persistence and hope. Themes that created negative experiences for the students included disparities between academic and personal cultures, lack …

The Christian Librarian

Forget the hoopla of New Years Day 2000; we know that January 1, 2001 actually marks the beginning of the 21" century. That fact notwithstanding, in this first issue of The Christian Librarian for the new millennium you will find a "business as usual" attitude. Perhaps that is because not all of the TCL team members share my mathematical insistence this is really the first month of the new millennium, but more likely it is because my colleagues are more concerned about the realities of Christian librarianship in the real world than they are in sophomoric niceties.
