A Framework For The Multiple Roles Of Librarians In Problem-Based Learning, Jolene Miller
A Framework For The Multiple Roles Of Librarians In Problem-Based Learning, Jolene Miller
Jolene M. Miller
Librarians are playing numerous roles within problem-based learning curricula. While many of these roles are described in the literature, there is no framework to describe and organize these roles. This paper proposes such a framework. It arranges librarian roles according to level of curricular involvement and includes the following levels: assistance at the reference desk, instruction at the reference desk, course-related instruction, resource management and utilization, consultation with faculty and students, and group facilitation.

No More Tours: How Library Tours Of The Past Become Today's Celebrations, Linda Walton, Teresa Westphal, Brian Lauer, Kurt Munson, James Shedlock
Linda J. Walton
In 1999, Northwestern University's Galter Health Sciences Library redesigned the library orientation program for first-year medical students. Surveys indicated tours were ineffective and students retained little of the information presented. Furthermore, the tour was not related to the student's curriculum and did not reinforce their learning objectives. As a replacement, the library staff developed a self-directed two-hour library open house. Stations throughout the library showcased the library staff, services, and resources, focusing on the first-year student curriculum. A follow-up survey found this redesign more useful and relevant to the students' course work, indicating libraries should be creating more interactive tours …

The Political Economy Of Distress In East Asian Financial Institutions, Paola Bongini, Stijn Claessens, Giovanni Ferri
Paola Bongini
The 1997±1999 East Asian crisis is an interesting case for studying the determinants of distress and closure of ®nancial institutions. Of a sample of 283 ®nancial institutions from Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, 120 experienced distress, and by July 1999, 38 were closed. We ®nd that traditional, CAMEL-type ®nancial data for 1996 help predict distress and closure. ``Connections''Ðwith industrial groups or in¯uential familiesÐincreased the likelihood of distress, however, suggesting that supervisors had granted selective prior forbearance from prudential regulations. Since closure was more, not less, likely with connections, the closure processes themselves appear transparent. We also ®nd evidence …

Bioethics In Social Context, Barry Hoffmaster
Bioethics In Social Context, Barry Hoffmaster
C. Barry Hoffmaster
"The problems of bioethics are embedded in people's lives and social worlds. They are shaped by individual biographies and relationships, by the ethos and institutions of health care, by economic and political pressures, by media depictions, and by the assumptions, beliefs, and values that permeate cultures and times. Yet these forces are largely ignored by a professional bioethics that concentrates on the theoretical justification of decisions.
The original essays in this volume use qualitative research methods to expose the multiple contexts within which the problems of bioethics arise, are defined and debated, and ultimately resolved. In a provocative concluding essay, …
