Review Of Intercountry Adoption From China: Examining Cultural Heritage And Other Postadoption Issues By Jay W. Rojewski And Jacy L. Rojewski; Greenwood, 2001, Sue Ann Gardner

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

With little formal background in this area, the authors have produced a well-researched, accessible handbook for U.S. residents who have adopted, or are considering adoption of, Chinese children. Jay Rojewski is an occupational studies professor and Jacy Rojewski is a middle school special education teacher, and their interest in the subject was piqued when they adopted a Chinese child several years ago. From a search of the literature it appears that the book fills a relative void on the topic. The authors cover a range of issues, including the philosophical issues and concerns surrounding intercountry adoption, how adoption from China …

Perspectives On Wellness: Journeys On The Red Road, Hilary N. Weaver Mar 2002

Perspectives On Wellness: Journeys On The Red Road, Hilary N. Weaver

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Wellness is a topic currently receiving considerable attention in Native American communities and among service providers who work with indigenous people. Through many professional programs and grassroots efforts strides have been made in shifting from a deficit focus to one of resilience and strength. However, substantially less has been written from a strengths or wellness perspective. Much of the positive work that has been conducted for years has never been reported in the literature and goes unnoticed by all but those directly involved. The literature on Native Americans includes primarily discussions of social and health problems including poverty, violence and …

Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech Mar 2002

Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Native American men have historically been important to their communities, each having a specific function in the perpetuation of cultural norms and practices. Oral tradition and communal experiential activity were pathways of maintaining a connection with others and in regenerating culture. In contrast, the modern dominant culture values and emphasizes individuation as an indicator of psychosocial growth. This influence seems to have hindered Indigenous people/men in maintaining a sense of connection with the community. Survival for Indigenous men during the establishment of encroaching nations has often occurred through relinquishment of a part of 'self' psychically. Aboriginal men report experiencing hopelessness …

Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens Mar 2002

Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Much of the public discourse on welfare reform is subjective and value laden, a composite of socially constructed stories and myths that support the dominant ideology. This article reports on a study that examines the language used by government officials, poverty experts, advocates and others to discuss welfare reform. Statements made about welfare reform were extracted from the Washington Post and the New York Times and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Dissecting the public language of welfare provides insight into how prevailing ideologies are communicated and reinforced, and how they can be changed.

Information Today Stands Alone, Carol Tenopir Mar 2002

Information Today Stands Alone, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

MORE THAN A DECADE ago I wrote about three family-owned publishers that served online information professionals (see "The Database Press," LJ 3/1/89, p. 56-57). Online Inc., Meckler-Media, and Learned Information Inc. each focused on the online community through conferences, journals, books, and other publications.

Now, just a decade later, only Information Today Inc. (the name of Learned Information Inc. since 1995) has stuck totally with the online information professional. In fact, Information Today (see www.infotoday.com) has purchased many of the information professional products from its former competitors, while Online Inc. and MecklerMedia have gone in other directions.

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts Mar 2002

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts

The Qualitative Report

Adolescent girls with conduct problems were interviewed regarding their (a) understanding of positive and negative emotions, (b) parental context of experiencing emotions, (c) ways of regulating emotions, (d) success in emotion regulation, and (e) use of alternative strategies in dealing with emotions. It was found that the girls have relatively little understanding of their negative internal states and/or are unable to express them to others, especially to fathers. They have few successful strategies for regulating negative emotions in themselves and others and are unaware of alternative strategies. This dysregulatory pattern likely prevents them from learning more appropriate ways of expressing …

Bias In Qualitative Research: Voices From An Online Classroom, Beloo Mehra Mar 2002

Bias In Qualitative Research: Voices From An Online Classroom, Beloo Mehra

The Qualitative Report

The issue of bias in qualitative research is an important one, and demands special attention and discussion in any qualitative research methods class. This reflective paper, written in the tradition of teacher-research, presents an analysis of how my students and I, working in an online classroom environment, learn together about the role researcher self and subjectivity play in designing and conducting qualitative research. While researcher bias and subjectivity are commonly understood as inevitable and important by most qualitative researchers, the beginners in qualitative research classes are generally not very comfortable with the idea of research that is not value-neutral. A …

Use Of Focus Groups In Survey Item Development, Sylvia C. Nassar-Mcmillan, L. Dianne Borders

The Qualitative Report

Focus groups are rapidly gaining popularity as a field research tool. This technique can be particularly effective in survey item development, as illustrated here via development of the Volunteer Work Behaviors Questionnaire. The steps involved in this process, ranging from item generation to finalizing logistics, are outlined. Implications for further research are proposed.
