What Now?: Students' Reactions To The Attacks Of September 11, 2001, Lara Banjanin, Marc Eaton

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

September 11, 2001 started off as just another Tuesday. Men and women across America woke up and went about their business as they would on any work day. However, that all changed at 8:45a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). A jetliner carrying 92 people slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Eighteen minutes later, a second jet carrying 65 people plowed into the south tower. A short time later, a third hijacked plane was guided into the Pentagon, and at 10:10a.m. a fourth jet crashed in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania (http://www.cnn.com. Accessed 17 …

On Police Use Of Deadly Force And The Southwest Phenomenon, Zach Hays Oct 2002

On Police Use Of Deadly Force And The Southwest Phenomenon, Zach Hays

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Over the last few decades police use of force has come under more and more scrutiny. Because it is the police who we depend on for protection, it is unsettling that the police commit unlawful violent acts. This is especially true when it comes to police use of deadly force. This study summarizes the research on police use of deadly force and attempts to reproduce some of the key findings. State-level data on police killings and various implications of two major theories are tested using multiple regression analyses. So far, replication of the results of previous studies with new data …

Western Harvester Ants’ Foraging Success And Nest Densities In Relation To Grazing Intensity, Shaharra Usnick, Richard Hart Oct 2002

Western Harvester Ants’ Foraging Success And Nest Densities In Relation To Grazing Intensity, Shaharra Usnick, Richard Hart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Western harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, are seed eaters that occur in short- and mid-grass prairies. Harvester ants are efficient seed predators but they may also be seed dispersers. We examined what ants collect to address that question. We also studied how different cattle grazing intensities affected harvester ant nest densities. Items collected by western harvester ant foragers returning to their nests were categorized as non-seeds, seeds, and nothing. Harvester ants collected large amounts of non-seeds (48%), followed by seeds (33%) and nothing (19%). Western harvester ants tolerate some environmental stress caused by grazing because nest densities were highest in …

Review Of Kansas Breeding Bird Atlas By William H. Busby And John L. Zimmerman, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 2002

Review Of Kansas Breeding Bird Atlas By William H. Busby And John L. Zimmerman, Paul A. Johnsgard

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Kansas has now joined the expanding group of Midwestern states for which breeding bird atlases have recently been published, including South Dakota (1995), Iowa (1996), Missouri (1997), and Nebraska (200 I). Atlases are also in preparation or in press for Oklahoma and Texas, which will soon help fill out distributional knowledge of the Great Plains avifauna in a way unimaginable when I was assembling regional data for my Birds of the Great Plains: The Breeding Species and Their Distribution (1979).

Review Of Voices Of A New Chicana/O History By Refugio Rochín And Dennis Valdes, James A. Garza Oct 2002

Review Of Voices Of A New Chicana/O History By Refugio Rochín And Dennis Valdes, James A. Garza

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The demographic changes affecting America's ethnic populations are a reminder that history is in constant flux. In particular, the Latina/o population is seeing its social and political influence grow, especially in the Midwest. How will mainstream America deal with this new reality? As politicians struggle over this issue, Chicana/o scholars are also finding that past definitions no longer fit today's academic environment. Voices of a New Chicanalo History, an informative and stimulating compilation of fourteen essays, represents this new historical debate. Edited by Refugio I. Rochfn and Dennis N. Valdes, the volume brings together a diverse group of Chicana/o …

The Internet In India And China, Larry Press, William Foster, Peter Wolcott, William Mchenry Oct 2002

The Internet In India And China, Larry Press, William Foster, Peter Wolcott, William Mchenry

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

This article compares the diffusion of the Internet in China and India. Using a six–dimension framework for characterizing the state of the Internet in a nation, we observe that, while both nations have made significant progress since our last comparison (in 1999), China enjoys a substantial lead over India.

We also examine determinants of Internet diffusion. We find that the Chinese Internet has benefited from economic and trade reform begun in the late 1980s, a strong government commitment to the Internet, complementary human and capital resources, etc. The two nations have very different governments and policies, leading to differing approaches …

The Influence Of Warning Label Presentation In Memory Recognition Of Aging Adults, Brian J. Call Oct 2002

The Influence Of Warning Label Presentation In Memory Recognition Of Aging Adults, Brian J. Call

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Research indicates that hundreds of thousands of people are injured each year as a result of poor communication between medical personnel, warning label information, and consumers when taking over the counter or prescription medication. Typically, as adults age, they are increasingly responsible for remembering the hazards of taking medications. If inadequate information exists in memory in regards to side effects, dosage, and other warnings, the likelihood of improper usage will increase. Because aging adults typically have a reduction in cognitive resources, it was hypothesized that older adults would require the aid of additional warning information to assist in the retrieval …

Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan Oct 2002

Adaptive Management: What Does It Mean And How Can It Be Used In Fire Management?, R. J. Whelan

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

‘Adaptive Management’ is becoming a frequently heard term but it is a much misunderstood concept. It does not mean that developments can go ahead and be ‘adapted’ if detrimental effects are discovered! Its greatest value is in defining an experimental approach to land management in situations where scientific knowledge is lacking but where immediate actions are required. This is especially important where doing nothing might conceivably be just as undesirable as applying any of the alternative management options. Given the lack of knowledge of fire responses of much of our native biota, adaptive management is clearly a sensible approach to …

The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley Oct 2002

The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French. To do so, the librarians created an authority list in French, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962 (the first edition appeared with the title Répertoire des Vedettes-matière). Since then, RVM has had increasing importance in providing support for subject access in francophone countries around the world as other libraries, first in Canada and then in Europe, either adopted RVM, often with some modification, for subject access or used it as a resource for creating French …

Rhino Earth Tiller Test Report: Area Reduction In Mixed Minefields, Christopher Wanner Oct 2002

Rhino Earth Tiller Test Report: Area Reduction In Mixed Minefields, Christopher Wanner

Global CWD Repository

The Rhino is a tracked tilling vehicle custom designed and built from the ground up. The working tiller consists of two horizontal drums, stacked one overtop of the other. The drums are studded with commercially available, asphalt shredding chisels. The lower drum counter rotates against the direction of vehicle travel, excavating soil and objects from burial depths of 25 – 35 centimeters. The excavated soil and constituent objects are carried up the face of the lower, digging drum and into the 1 to 5 centimeter gap between the lower and upper drums. The chisels on the two drums mesh with …

The Effects Of An Induced Negative Mood State On Ground- Based Learning In Student Pilots, Angela Sophia Wendell Oct 2002

The Effects Of An Induced Negative Mood State On Ground- Based Learning In Student Pilots, Angela Sophia Wendell

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Instructors Handbook (D.O.T.) (1999) emphasizes that aviation students must maintain a healthy and positive state of mind in order to succeed at learning. Factors such as worry, lack of interest, physical discomfort, and anxiety are all listed as obstacles to a student's ability to learn successfully during flight instruction. In addition, numerous studies support the idea that a negative mood state will have a detrimental effect on learning. This study attempts to investigate the effects of an induced negative mood state on ground- based learning in student pilots.
