Gnosis Ii: A Library Tutorial For Undergraduate Students, Elvira Saurina Solanes, Alicia Gaete

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Library use instruction in the Library System of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile is an important issue that involves librarians, faculty and students. The Library System aims to have autonomous library users by teaching and engaging them in effectively using the resources offered by the library. Web tutorials offer a relaxing environment to students who can learn at their own pace and when they require it.

Gnosis II is a web-based tutorial, in Spanish, built by three librarians of the Library System, a faculty from the School of Nursing and staff from the Computer Department of the University. It …

Competition And Complementarity In Local Economic Development: A Nonlinear Dynamic Approach, Richard Healy, Randall Jackson Jan 2002

Competition And Complementarity In Local Economic Development: A Nonlinear Dynamic Approach, Richard Healy, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Competition for local economic development has increased dramatically in the past 20 years. This competition is in many cases extremely costly to states and communities, while the benefits are uncertain. If regions whose economic fortunes are complementary could work with instead of against one another, costs of competition could be eliminated, while returns to economic development investments could be enhanced. This paper presents a method by which the underlying spatial economic relationships among areas within a region can be identified. Economic development policy can then be guided by the identification of the competitive or complementary links that exist among areas. …

Race, Migration, And The Social Welfare System During The 1950s And 1960s: How Research Can Mislead The Public Debate, Brian Cushing Jan 2002

Race, Migration, And The Social Welfare System During The 1950s And 1960s: How Research Can Mislead The Public Debate, Brian Cushing

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

A large body of empirical research has concluded that, at least during the 1950s and 1960s, the effect of welfare benefits on migration differed significantly by racial group, with blacks being attracted by and whites repulsed by areas that provided high welfare benefits. This study revisits the issue of racial differences in attractiveness to interregional differences in welfare benefits, using data from the U.S. Census of Population and a simultaneous equation model of state-to-state migration that accounts for a variety of economic, amenity, and spatial factors. In contrast to most previous empirical work, there is no statistically significant evidence that …

Linking Economic Model And Engineering Model: Application Of Sequential Interindustry Model (Sim), Yasuhide Okuyama, Hyunwoo Lim Jan 2002

Linking Economic Model And Engineering Model: Application Of Sequential Interindustry Model (Sim), Yasuhide Okuyama, Hyunwoo Lim

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

A conventional approach to model the regional economic impacts of a catastrophic disaster has been to employ the results from an engineering model, such as lifeline network model, in an economic model, for example input-output framework or computable general equilibrium model. However, due to the differences in modeling scheme between economic and engineering models, this type of data feed creates problems regarding sensitivity and dynamics of the impacts. In this paper, Sequential Interindustry Model (SIM) is used to disaggregate the process of production chronology to become more sensitive to the changes/damages of economic activities under a disaster situation. SIM is …

Girl Driven Research Project, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Madeline Troche-Rodriguez, Jessica Palmert

Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works

Girl World, a program within Alternatives Inc in the neighborhood of Uptown on Chicago’s North Side, provides gender specific and age appropriate programming for girls and young women ages 10 to 18. Program activities focus on increasing self-esteem and self-efficacy, encouraging teamwork and social justice awareness, and developing leaders. In partnership with CURL, Girl World designed and implemented Participatory Research asking the question "How do young African American women feel about their hair and what influences them to feel that way?" They reviewed literature, collected data through observations, interviews and photos and analyzed data. Issues of self esteem, self …

Implementation Rules For Fiscal Decentralization, Roy W. Bahl Jan 2002

Implementation Rules For Fiscal Decentralization, Roy W. Bahl

ECON Publications

While there are many analyses of fiscal decentralization as a policy strategy, little attention has been given to putting such programs into place. Yet it is in the implementation, and almost never in the general concept, where decentralization fails. This paper is meant to offer some rough guidelines for implementation-twelve general 'rules' that might form the basis of a decentralization strategy. We begin with a discussion of the rationale for fiscal decentralization, that is, with a statement of the objectives that should lead the design of a decentralization program. We turn then to the guidelines that could form the backbone …

Holding The Line With A Watchful Eye: Parental Monitoring And Parental Permissiveness And Risky Sexual Behavior Among Adolescents In Psychiatric Care, Geri R. Donenberg, Helen W. Wilson, Erin Emerson, Fred B. Bryant Jan 2002

Holding The Line With A Watchful Eye: Parental Monitoring And Parental Permissiveness And Risky Sexual Behavior Among Adolescents In Psychiatric Care, Geri R. Donenberg, Helen W. Wilson, Erin Emerson, Fred B. Bryant

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Adolescents in psychiatric care are at increased risk of HIV, yet little is known about the family factors related to sexual risk taking among these youth. We explored whether perceived parental monitoring and perceived parental permissiveness were linked to high-risk sexual behavior in 169 ethnically diverse urban youth seeking mental health services in Chicago, and we tested whether adolescent gender moderated these associations. We evaluated sexual risk taking at a global level and for specific risk behaviors (e.g., sex without a condom, sex while using drugs and alcohol). Girls reported more risky sex overall than boys, and girls were more …

Virginia Tech’S Innovative College Librarian Program, Nancy H. Seamans, Paul Metz Jan 2002

Virginia Tech’S Innovative College Librarian Program, Nancy H. Seamans, Paul Metz

University Library Faculty Publications

In 1994, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) Libraries founded a College Librarian Program. Begun with four librarians serving four colleges, it has since grown to include eleven librarians providing comprehensive library services to the six of Virginia Tech's eight colleges not served by branch libraries. Other authors have described the early history of the program or outlined some of its specific elements. By reviewing how the program came to be, by analyzing the choice points it presents, especially from an administrative perspective, and by discussing its benefits and costs from a university point of view, the authors …

Strategies To Increase Student Interest In Aging, Nancy P. Kropf Jan 2002

Strategies To Increase Student Interest In Aging, Nancy P. Kropf

SW Publications

Due to changing demographics, all social workers will have experience working with older clients and their families within professional roles. Unfortunately, social work education continues to lag in preparing students to be effective in practice with aging clients. Several strategies are presented with the goal of increasing student interest in the field of aging. At the program level, initiatives include using experiential learning, infusing aging content into required courses, and enhancing faculty capacity in aging. In addition, social work programs can build collaborations within the university setting and practice community. Overall, the goal is to present aging as an exciting …

International Telephone Calls: Global And Regional Patterns, Risa Palm Jan 2002

International Telephone Calls: Global And Regional Patterns, Risa Palm

Geosciences Faculty Publications

This study examines patterns in international telephone communications, documenting a close relationship between international call volume aggregated by nation and indicators of global connectivity including volume of international trade, tourism and migration. In addition, the analysis documents the existence of a set of national “communities” of callers. The clear orientation of large portions of the world to former colonial powers (e.g., West Africa and North Africa to France), and the separation of the Muslim Middle East and the Chinese-speaking nations of East and Southeast Asia from other calling communities suggest the importance of continuing historic and cultural influences on information …

The Internet And Home Purchase, Risa Palm Jan 2002

The Internet And Home Purchase, Risa Palm

Geosciences Faculty Publications

In the pre-internet era, information was a key determinant of the geographic nature of intra- urban moves. Information was a far more limited commodity, and therefore subject to management and even manipulation. Information brokers, particularly real estate agents, could order and limit the kinds of information to which prospective buyers gained access, with the potential of strongly biasing search space. In the past few years, a vastly enriched information source on housing vacancies has become available through real estate industry-sponsored sites on the internet. This rich information source has the potential to influence spatial patterns and processes in the search …

Method To Their Madness: Dispelling The Myth Of Economic Rationality As A Behavioral Ideal, John Dobson Jan 2002

Method To Their Madness: Dispelling The Myth Of Economic Rationality As A Behavioral Ideal, John Dobson

Finance

Although not immediately apparent, the discipline of behavioral finance is rapidly adopting an implicit prescriptive agenda. Behavioral finance does not merely describe financial market reality, it shapes it. Economic rationality is taken as the ideal toward to which individuals 'should' strive. In this paper I show that, as a behavioral ideal, economic rationality is unjustified both from a strictly economic perspective, and from a moral perspective. In short, there is nothing inherently 'wrong' with economically irrational participants in the business environment. Indeed such participants will actually enhance the efficiency, and the ethicality, of business. "rationality itself, whether theoretical or practical, …

Numerical Techniques For Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Continuous-Time Diffusion Processes, Garland B. Durham, A. Ronald Gallant Jan 2002

Numerical Techniques For Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Continuous-Time Diffusion Processes, Garland B. Durham, A. Ronald Gallant

Finance

Stochastic differential equations often provide a convenient way to describe the dynamics of economic and financial data, and a great deal of effort has been expended searching for efficient ways to estimate models based on them. Maximum likelihood is typically the estimator of choice; however, since the transition density is generally unknown, one is forced to approximate it. The simulation-based approach suggested by Pedersen (1995) has great theoretical appeal, but previously available implementations have been computationally costly. We examine a variety of numerical techniques designed to improve the performance of this approach. Synthetic data generated by a Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model with …

Celebrity Memes, Audioshop, And Participatory Fan Culture: A Case Study On Keanu Reeves Memes, Danielle Nielsen, Diane Sabenacio Nititham Jan 2002

Celebrity Memes, Audioshop, And Participatory Fan Culture: A Case Study On Keanu Reeves Memes, Danielle Nielsen, Diane Sabenacio Nititham

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Contemporary meme culture keeps Keanu Reeves' image at the forefront of our imagination. Numerous Keanu-related memes circulate on the internet, featuring images of him from on and off screen. In this article, we argue that the rise of user-generated content, such as memes and social media, requires us to reconsider how audiences and fans consume, adapt, and circulate Keanu’s stardom. Specifically, we contend that memes and their attending participatory culture make Keanu familiar by placing him in knowable spaces and perpetuating his extraordinary ordinariness. To do so, we examine the 2019 ‘Keanu Reeves Walking in Slow Motion’ video clip from …

The Incidence Of Agricultural Policy, Julian M. Alston, Jennifer S. James Jan 2002

The Incidence Of Agricultural Policy, Julian M. Alston, Jennifer S. James

Agribusiness

This chapter first discusses what economists mean by "the incidence of agricultural policy" and why we care about it. Then it reviews models of the determinants of the differential incidence of different policies among interest groups such as suppliers of factors of production, consumers, middlemen, taxpayers, and others. Results are represented in terms of Marshallian economic surplus, and surplus transformation curves. After reviewing the results from standard models under restrictive assumptions, certain assumptions are relaxed in order to analyze the effects of imperfect supply controls, variability, cheating and imperfect enforcement of policies, and the dynamics of supply.

Oak Woodland Economics: A Contingent Valuation Of Conversion Alternatives, Richard P. Thompson, Jay E. Noel, Sarah P. Cross Jan 2002

Oak Woodland Economics: A Contingent Valuation Of Conversion Alternatives, Richard P. Thompson, Jay E. Noel, Sarah P. Cross

Agribusiness

Decisions on how much land should be devoted to oak woodland preservation is ultimately determined by society's valuation of its benefits and relative scarcity. Scarcity value can be measured by people's willingness-to-pay (WTP) to prevent oak woodland conversion to higher value land uses. In this study, we used the contingent valuation (CV) method to estimate WTP for oak woodland preservation in San Luis Obispo County (over 700,000 acres). Estimates ranged between $75 and $83 per voter, providing only about $12 million for land or easement purchases.

Xml-Based Modeling And Simulation: Web Service Technologies And Their Synergy With Simulation, Senthilanand Chandrasekaran, Gregory S. Silver, John A. Miller, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The World Wide Web has had an huge influence on the computing field in general as well as simulation in particular (e.g., Web-based simulation). A new wave of development based upon XML has started. Two of the most interesting aspects of this development are the Semantic Web and Web services. This paper examines the synergy between Web service technology and simulation. In one direction, Web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models/components can be built out of Web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a part of Web …

Retrospect And Prospect In The Psychological Study Of Families., James P. Mchale, Wendy S. Grolnick Jan 2002

Retrospect And Prospect In The Psychological Study Of Families., James P. Mchale, Wendy S. Grolnick

Faculty Books

Provides an overview of family group dynamics. First, the authors draw on the work of the anthropologist S. Harrell to describe 4 basic family system formations. The authors then consider more specifically family groups in the US and the roots of American psychologists' current belief system about "optimal" family functioning. Next, the authors spotlight recent research on coparenting and family group process in the nuclear family group and discuss studies linking these dynamics to important indicators of young children's development and adaptation. The authors emphasize the need to extend this fledging knowledge base on how coparental and family group processes …

Teoretické Interpretace Transformace Ve Středni A Východni Evropě (Theoretical Interpretations Of Central And East European Post-Communist Transformations), Petr Pavlinek

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Post-communist transformations have been approached and interpreted differently by different academic disciplines and their respective subdisciplines. This paper provides a critical review of traditional and alternative views of changes in Central and Eastern Europe since the collapse of state socialism. In particular, it focuses on neo-liberal and neoclassical economic interpretations and neo-marxist state to private capitalism thesis as examples of traditional interpretations of post-communist transformations. Alternative views critically reviewed in this paper are based on evolutionary and institutional economics, the analysis of networks of economic embeddedness, the Marxist analysis of production processes, and regulation theory. The differences between these traditional …
