Progressive Race Blindness: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 2002

Progressive Race Blindness: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

This Article responds to the advocates of "progressive race blindness" with several critiques of their central claims. Part I examines the contours of progressive race blindness in greater detail, giving centrality to the emergence of this theory in legal scholarship. Part I sets forth the common themes articulated in progressive race blindness arguments and highlights important differences among its proponents. Part II isolates several problems with the progressive race blindness literature and demonstrates that these weaknesses make the literature unhelpful as a political or legal theory and even dangerous to the cause of antiracism. Part III offers suggestions for future …

Feeding Our Hungry: An Interview With Rachel Bristol Of The Oregon Food Bank, Suzanne Feeney

Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications

In the aftermath of the events of September 11, Oregon's economy has experienced a downturn, with some reports indicating that Oregon's unemployment rate is now second in the nation. Even before September 11, Oregon earned the dubious reputation of having the highest hunger rate in the nation. In a recent interview, Suzanne Feeney, Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Management and Associate Professor of Public Administration at Portland State University, spoke with Rachel Bristol, Executive Director of The Oregon Food Bank, to get her views about the struggle to feed the hungry.

A Positive Political Model Of Supreme Court Economic Decisions, Tony Caporale, Harold Winter Jan 2002

A Positive Political Model Of Supreme Court Economic Decisions, Tony Caporale, Harold Winter

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We develop a positive political model of the U.S. Supreme Court. Looking at the Court's economic cases for the period 1953-1993, we find a significant larger fraction of conservative decisions under Republican presidents and more conservative leadership of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. Conservative decisions are also found to be positively correlated with the fraction of the Court appointed by Republican presidents and the rate of price inflation. We argue that our findings cast serious doubt on the common view of the Supreme Court as a completely independent, apolitical institution.

Positive And Negative Symptoms Of Schizotypy And The Five-Factor Model: A Domain And Facet Level Analysis, Scott R. Ross, Catherine J. Lutz, Steven E. Bailley

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated the Five-factor model in the concurrent prediction of positive symptomschizotypy as measured by the Magical Ideation (Eckblad & Chapman, 1983) and Perceptual Aberration (Chapman, Chapman, & Raulin, 1978) scales and negative symptom schizotypy as measured by the Physical Anhedonia (Chapman, Chapman, & Raulin, 1976) and Revised Social Anhedonia (Eckblad, Chapman, Chapman, & Mishlove, 1982; Mishlove & Chapman, 1985) scales. Previous studies suggest that these measures reflect the core symptoms found in schizotypal and schizoid personality disorder (Bailey, West, Widiger, & Freiman, 1993). Negative symptoms were significantly predicted by Neuroticism (+), Extraversion (-), Openness (-), and …

Comprehensive Profile Of Adult Outpatient Psychotherapy Treatment Responders, Nonresponders, And Negative Responders In A Naturalistic Treatment Setting , Anya Genieser-Derosa

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Since its inception, the effectiveness of psychotherapy as a treatment for psychological distress has been challenged vigorously. During the past 5 decades, increasingly sophisticated research studies have demonstrated psychotherapy effective in treating a variety ofpsychological disorders in the majority of individuals who avail themselves of treatment. Moreover, despite fierce competition among proponents of various psychotherapy models attempting to prove their model of choice most effective, research findings suggest the major models of psychotherapy are all equally effective in treating most individuals. Some have therefore shifted their research focus to determining the factors common to major psychotherapies that promote treatment success. …

Structured Multifaceted Cognitive Behaviorally Oriented Assessment And Treatment Of Nonadherence To Medical Advice : A Case Study, Cheryl A. Patchin

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The incidence of nonadherence to medical advice is estimated to be as high as 98%, with a typical range of 30% to 60%. This case study focused on the assessment and treatment of a patient suffering from uncontrolled essential hypertension, who was inconsistent in her adherence to the prescribed medical regimen and who demonstrated a significant health risk as a result. From baseline (pretreatment) to termination (followup), the patient attended a total of 9 sessions over a 12-week period. Assessment involved clinical interviews and an original self-administered instrument, the Health Behavior Profiling Questionnaire (HBPQ). The HBPQ was designed to assess …

Beyond Symbolic Representation: A Comparison Of The Electoral Pathways And Policy Priorities Of Asian American And Latino Elected Officials, Kim Geron, James Lai Jan 2002

Beyond Symbolic Representation: A Comparison Of The Electoral Pathways And Policy Priorities Of Asian American And Latino Elected Officials, Kim Geron, James Lai

Ethnic Studies

This is an exploratory study of the impact of Latino and Asian American elected officials on their respective groups' political incorporation. The authors argue that Latino and Asian American elected officials' paths to elected office do not always fit the biracial coalition model of political incorporation for minorities, and instead suggest a reconstructed model to explain the distinctive character of Latino and Asian American group efforts toward political representation. The results of this paper are based on information gathered from two nationwide mail surveys of Latino elected officials (LEOs) and Asian American elected officials (AAEOs). The 2000 National Asian American …

A Look At The Digitization Process, Nadia Nasr

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Libraries traffic in information and librarians act as gateways to that inforrnation. One of their key roles involves enabling users io acccess information. This was at one time limited to the written word; however, with the integration of computers into the library, this has expanded to include the virtual word as well. The World Wide Web has presented new and unexplored vistas of informa· tion, and some have said it will replace the need for librarians entirely. lnstead of making librarians obsolete, the virtual world has merely presented a new challenge to librarians. The same needs for a physical library …

Think Globally And Act Locally: Local Implementation Of Japan's Internationalization Policy, Anita Y.K. Davis Jan 2002

Think Globally And Act Locally: Local Implementation Of Japan's Internationalization Policy, Anita Y.K. Davis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In the late 1980s, the Japanese national government proposed a plan to "internationalize" the country – to increase international understanding. This national proposal resulted from the pressures of globalization as well as a mixture of domestic political and economic factors. Through this broad proposal, Japan sought to decentralize and encourage local levels of government to create individual policies for globalizing their communities. It proposed internationalizing business and education, exposing the Japanese people to outside cultures, exposing foreigners to Japan's culture, and increasing the Japanese people's familiarity with English. While the national government provided general suggestions for internationalization (kokusaika), its intent …

Ningyo: Destined For The Trash Can?, Anita Y.K. Davis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Japanese Ningyo (dolls) are static art, individual sculptures and expressions of creativity. This paper explores the loss of these wonderful works of art. While western dolls fetch high prices and are highly sought after if even a few decades old, we explore the destination of most ningyo as they fail to be recognized or preserved. Particularly the dolls fashioned by women to decorate their homes, as their beauty fades they are set aside. What has happened to them? What is taking their place as globalization is changing the decorating desires of the Japanese?

The Availability Heuristic In Judgments Of Research Findings: Manipulations Of Subjective Experience, Michele A. Shams Jan 2002

The Availability Heuristic In Judgments Of Research Findings: Manipulations Of Subjective Experience, Michele A. Shams

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Previous studies have demonstrated that what is easy to call to mind will influence judgments. The impact of a person's subjective experience was tested for its influence on judgments of social psychological research findings. Eighty three college students generated examples of 40 research findings. Students subsequently judged the ease with which the examples came to mind and the probability of experiencing similar examples. Students then evaluated the obviousness and importance of and their interest in the research outcomes. Students also provided demographic information and indicated their previous knowledge in psychology. In the current study, the ease with which examples of …

Extending Learning Opportunities In The Basic Communication Course: Exploring The Pedagogical Benefits Of Speech Laboratories, Stephen K. Hunt, Cheri J. Simonds

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study asked 527 students enrolled in a basic communication course to evaluate the efficacy of a speech lab in relation to speech requirements stipulated by their instructors. In addition, the researchers examined the scores of 435 student speeches to determine if students who visited the lab earned higher grades compared to students that did not visit the lab. Results showed that (a) most instructors require their students to visit the lab before at least one speech, (b) the vast majority of students perceive the help they receive in the lab to be very useful, and (c) students who visit …

Implicit Religion And The Curvilinear Relationship Between Religion And Death Anxiety, James M. Donovan Jan 2002

Implicit Religion And The Curvilinear Relationship Between Religion And Death Anxiety, James M. Donovan

James M. Donovan

Debate over the relationship of religion to death anxiety has included the opposing views of Malinowski, who held that religion lessened death anxiety, and Radcliffe-Brown, who argued that religion increased death anxiety. Homans' theoretical synthesis of these viewpoints was tested by Leming, who concluded that the empirical relationship was curvilinear, meaning that both high and low religious involvements resulted in low death anxiety while middle-range attachments did not.

Reconsideration of this result argues that the presence of death anxiety is not dependent upon social learning, and that either high or low levels of theism leads to the resolution of anxiety …

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien Jan 2002

Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A programming approach, data envelopment analysis (DEA), will sort and rank occupations on the basis of maximizing skills required and minimizing that occupation's wage resulting in a set of "hiring" efficiency scores. This procedure improves Borda rankings (rankings based on the average of rankings of the individual components), fixed weight, or subjective weighting schemes. In DEA, the linear programming weights or coefficients are explicitly chosen to maximize the discrimination between the skills and wages. A rank correlation between the efficiency scores and various work and demographic variables is performed. The results show a negative correlation between the wage rate and …

Establishing Understandings: Teaching About Culture In Introductory Television Courses, Barbara R. Burke, Julie Rae Patterson-Pratt Jan 2002

Establishing Understandings: Teaching About Culture In Introductory Television Courses, Barbara R. Burke, Julie Rae Patterson-Pratt

Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications

In teaching introductory courses using television equipment, we find that cultural studies interests can be meshed with basic skills-oriented production classes in useful ways. Utilizing an on-going discussion strategy emphasizing that students are evaluating, criticizing, and interpreting, as well as producing cultural products, the activities we describe articulate the reflexive nature of media and culture. Furthermore, in asking students to investigate and explore ways media both construct and reflect their understanding of culture, students are guided to begin a life-long process of critical thinking.
