Embodied Light, Chris Mcdonough

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Underwater photography triggers new ways of experiencing space, time, and being. In the seemingly boundless liquid space, the self expands and focused attention induces intense clarity of the present moment and of our basic nakedness. This portfolio seeks to capture the primal embodied experience of weightless energy and the unceasing dance of light, the creator/ destroyer.

Zimbabwe: Cbd Roles Modified To Address Zimbabwe's Hiv/Aids Crisis, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

In September 1999, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) and the Population Council initiated a one-year study to assess the performance of ZNFPC’s community-based distribution (CBD) program. A continual decline in the program’s productivity, combined with the expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic, indicated a need to reconsider ZNFPC’s objectives and revise the roles and responsibilities of its full-time, salaried CBD agents. The study examined the productivity, costs, and potential sustainability of the CBD program. Researchers gathered information by reviewing program documents through 1999. They also interviewed program managers, district and community nurses, and community leaders and CBD agents from eight regions. …

A Theoretical Proposal For Reaching Irreligious Czech People Through A Mission Revitalization Movement, Petr Činčala Jan 2002

A Theoretical Proposal For Reaching Irreligious Czech People Through A Mission Revitalization Movement, Petr Činčala

Dissertations

The main goal of this study was to develop a theory of missionary outreach to unchurched Czech people which is biblically informed and culturally relevant. The theoretical proposal for a plausible model of churching in the Czech Republic builds on basic theological, philosophical, and conceptual assumptions (chapter 2), a societal analysis of the problem of Czech churching (chapter 3), and a review of the issues relating to the situation of existing churches and religious movements.

Based on Wallace’s theory of revitalization movements a model is developed for starting a missionary movement that aims at reaching today’s unchurched and seemingly irreligious …

The Impact Of Burnout On Human Physiology And On Operational Performance: A Prospective Study Of Soldiers Enrolled In The Combat Diver Qualification Course, Charles A. Morgan Iii, Tracey Cho, Gary Hazlett, Vladimir Coric, Jeff Morgan Jan 2002

The Impact Of Burnout On Human Physiology And On Operational Performance: A Prospective Study Of Soldiers Enrolled In The Combat Diver Qualification Course, Charles A. Morgan Iii, Tracey Cho, Gary Hazlett, Vladimir Coric, Jeff Morgan

National Security Faculty Publications

(from p. 201) "If little is known about the pathophysiology of burnout, even less is known about the actual impact of burnout on military operational performance. This is due to a lack of studies focused on military performance. Whether or not soldiers may feel symptoms of burnout is one thing - whether this state actually affects how they do their job is another. Within the current environment (reduced forces, increased training rates, increased deployment rates, extended tours) we believe that military personnel may be at significant risk for the development of burnout. Further, we wondered if there was a demonstrable …

An Exploration Of Possible Causes Of High Dropout Rates In Native American Reservation Schools, Mary Cornelius Jan 2002

An Exploration Of Possible Causes Of High Dropout Rates In Native American Reservation Schools, Mary Cornelius

Nebraska Anthropologist

Native American reservation schools have significantly higher dropout rates and lower graduation rates than the national average. Significant problems behind high dropout rates on Native American reservations in the United States include poverty, lack of support from elders and differing expectations and ways of communicating between teachers and students in the classroom. The history of Native American education includes many efforts at assimilation and the destruction of native cultural practices and languages. This still impedes today 's youth in that many elders still see schooling as a tool of assimilation and do not encourage or support success in what they …

The Mythological Role Of Gender Ideologies: A Cross-Cultural Sample Of Traditional Cultures, Richard Owens Jan 2002

The Mythological Role Of Gender Ideologies: A Cross-Cultural Sample Of Traditional Cultures, Richard Owens

Nebraska Anthropologist

Hunting and gathering along with horticultural societies provide a basis for understanding contemporary ideologies. Such groups are generally labeled as egalitarian societies from their status and treatment of females. A survey of traditional hunters-gatherers and horticultural societies compared their mythological charters on gender ideologies to the dally interactions of gender roles in order to determine their level of influence on the culture. Traditional societies are thought to be a basis to observe gender stratification among all known societies. The division of labor is in all cultures, as a means to limit control economic resources, often favoring men. In this paper …

A Study Of Sign Language In Clump Anzees, Kelli Bacon

Nebraska Anthropologist

One of the hot topics in anthropology concerns the debate over chimpanzee communicative and lingual abilities. This paper will offer evidence gatheredfrom studies by Allen and Beatrice Gardner, Roger Fouts, Maury and Jane Temerlin, Herbert S. Terrace, T G. Bever, and Sheri Roush who all used American Sign Language (Ameslan) to teach their students Washoe, Lucy, Bruno, Booee, Cindy, Thelma, Nim, Moja, Pili, Tatu, Dar, Loulis, and Ally. Each of the studies lfas tailored differently, but many of the results were the same. This, in itself, might be evidence for some level of lingual ability, but some scholars such as …

Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell Jan 2002

Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Rough Cilicia Survey Project (RCSP) has been collecting data on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey (known as Rough Ci/icia) since 1996. This paper is a preliminary analysis of how the architectural and ceramic data collected by the survey team may be utilized. It is theorized here that the frequency of certain ceramic types may be linked to amount of architecture. However, this paper is not meant to be conclusive, but is rather a starting point for future studies of this data.

Qumran: Archaeology And Theories Of Identification, Ann Putz Jan 2002

Qumran: Archaeology And Theories Of Identification, Ann Putz

Nebraska Anthropologist

Research at Qumran has lead many archaeologists, religious figures, and other academics into disagreements about what the site really was during the time of the Romans in the Holy Land. Qumran was first excavated in the 1950 's after scrolls were found in the caves surrounding the site. The site has some very unique features not found anywhere else in Israel or Jordan, leaving the researchers somewhat confused. Qumran has had several occupations and has also been rebuilt many times due to earthquakes. This only adds to the confusing in determining what the site of Qumran really was.

Life History Response Of Mediterranean Fruit Flies To Dietary Restriction, James R. Carey, Pablo Liedo, Lawrence G. Harshman, Ying Zhang, Hans-Georg Müller, Linda Partridge, Jane-Ling Wang

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate medfly longevity and reproduction across a broad spectrum of diet restriction using a protocol similar to those applied in most rodent studies. Age-specific reproduction and age of death were monitored for 1,200 adult males and 1,200 females, each individually maintained on one of 12 diets from ad libitum to 30% of ad libitum. Diet was provided in a fixed volume of solution that was fully consumed each day, ensuring control of total nutrient consumption for every fly. Contrary to expectation and precedence, increased longevity was not observed at any level of …

The Challenge Of Absent Presence, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

“Let your home know where your heart is.” (Billboard advertisement for cellular phone) The setting is a retirement home for the elderly. Wilfred enters the veranda in search of two close friends. He is in luck, they are both present. But alas, one is lost to her Walkman and the other is engrossed in his book. Neither notices Wilfred's presence. Frustrated, Wilfred is left to stare silently into space. Such is the beginning of Ronald Harwood's London play, Quartet. Young or old, we instantly identify with the scene. How often do we enter a room to find family, friends or …

Research Proposal: Effects Of Class Attendance On Overall Grades, Sarah Seay Jan 2002

Research Proposal: Effects Of Class Attendance On Overall Grades, Sarah Seay

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

One research inquiry that comes to question is whether school attendance has an effect on overall grades made by each student. This question comes to mind for numerous reasons. If students do not miss school does this mean they get better grades because they are learning more or because of their dedication and motivation and low absence levels. Is it that students who miss numerous days of school do not care about their grades or that their grades are lower because they do poorly on tests and assignments?

Memorial: Beverley J. Pooley (1934-2001), Margaret A. Leary

Articles

Beverley J. Pooley died at the age of sixty-seven on August 23, 2001, of kidney failure due to complications from pancreatic cancer. His death came shockingly fast, for he had only learned how seriously ill he was the week before. The bare facts about Bev's life cannot begin to describe what he was to the local community, the University of Michigan, and the law school world. Born in England in 1934, he earned B.A. and LL.B. degrees from Cambridge University; and LL.M., S.J.D., and M.A. in Library Science degrees from the University of Michigan. During that time he served in …

Social Exchange And Customer Service: The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support, Leader-Member Exchange, And Customer Service Behavior, Lisa Michelle Polly Jan 2002

Social Exchange And Customer Service: The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support, Leader-Member Exchange, And Customer Service Behavior, Lisa Michelle Polly

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As the economy continues to shift from the production of goods to the delivery of services, one way in which an organization might set itself apart from its competition is through the delivery of high quality customer service. Therefore, a critical question for organizations becomes how to elicit the appropriate level of service from its employees. The purpose of the current study was to propose and test a social exchange based model of customer service. Specifically, it was suggested that the quality of the organization-service employee and manager-service employee relationships would be related to employee customer service behavior through their …

Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio Jan 2002

Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Evolutionary perspectives on human mating have provided testable hypotheses regarding what qualities people desire in their mates and why they want them. One study was conducted to replicate previous findings in mate preference using a more sophisticated paired comparison methodology to develop scales. Paired comparison scaling generally replicated gender differences in mate preferences consistent with evolutionary predictions. Further, decision-making reaction time (ms) suggested the presence of an underlying psychological continuum of selection criteria. A series of studies were then conducted applying the information processing approach (IPA) to investigate attention and knowledge organization in mate preference. The dot-probe paradigm was used …

Can [Sonorant] Spread?, Kenneth S. Olson, Paul H. Schultz Jan 2002

Can [Sonorant] Spread?, Kenneth S. Olson, Paul H. Schultz

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper presents empirical evidence for the spread of the feature [sonorant], based on data from Bilaala (Nilo-Saharan, Chad). The analysis assumes that this feature is a dependent of the root node rather than part of the root node (as previously assumed). An alternative analysis, involving the spread of the feature [nasal], is shown to be inferior to one in which [sonorant] spreads.
