"Woman Arise!": Political Work In The Writings Of Lu Dalton, Sheree Maxwell Bench Jan 2002

"Woman Arise!": Political Work In The Writings Of Lu Dalton, Sheree Maxwell Bench

Theses and Dissertations

In 1872, Mormon plural wife, educator, and suffragist Lucinda Lee Dalton began writing fiery political essays and insightful poetry for the Woman's Exponent from her small community in southern Utah. Through her writings Dalton endeavors to shape the opinions of Exponent readers by working within public discourse toward the goal of equality for women. At times both optimistic and troubled, she uses the rhetorical strategies of humor, irony, reason, identification, and persuasion to educate men and women on disparities and to encourage women to participate actively in their own emancipation. She often engages in a dialogical process with other writers …

The Cultural Ecology Of Pastoralism In Eritrea: A Geographical Inquiry, Woldetensae Tewolde Kahsaye Jan 2002

The Cultural Ecology Of Pastoralism In Eritrea: A Geographical Inquiry, Woldetensae Tewolde Kahsaye

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigative cultural ecologic study of the pastoralists in the eastern and northwestern lowlands of Eritrea. Tigre, Hidareb, and Rashaida herders were identified and studied throughout the fieldwork. These ethnic groups constitute people with defined cultural and economic characteristics inhabiting environments characterized by marked seasonal variations in precipitation. Their livelihoods are almost wholly dependent on livestock forming types of modes of production identified as pure-pastoralism and agro-pastoralism. The distinction between these two forms lies primarily in the type of economic strategy pursued (i.e., wholly livestock-based economy versus livestock-crop economy) as well as in the pattern of pastoral …

The Core Virtue Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2002

The Core Virtue Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

Christian librarians should derive their professional ethics from methodical exegesis of the Bible. The New Testament's most salient ethical statements center on love-for God, neighbor, and fellow believers. Each of these has significant implications for library practice. Identifying love as the core virtue of librarianship represents a radical departure from secular approaches to library ethics. While the biblical and secular models converge on some significant points, they are fundamentally opposite. Where the two reach similar conclusions, the biblical model proves to be more philosophically consistent. The Scriptures speak with enduring relevance to the issues facing librarians.

Infertility And Marital Adjustment: The Influence Of Perception Of Social Support, Privacy Preference And Level Of Depression, Margaret Haviland Maillet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of perception of social support, privacy preference and level of depression on marital adjustment for couples presenting for infertility treatment. Data was obtained from three infertility clinics in Louisiana from January 1, 2001 through October 1, 2001. Forty-seven couples presenting for infertility treatment completed four questionnaires measuring marital adjustment, perception of social support, privacy preference and level of depression. Demographic and descriptive information was gathered from an information sheet completed by the subjects. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine which, if any, of the independent variables predicted the dependent …

Thirty And Counting: A Personal Perspective On The Journal Of The Society Of Georgia Archivists, Ellen Garrison

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Fifty-seven issues. Two hundred and sixty-three articles. Four thousand four hundred and twelve pages. No matter how impressive, those numbers alone cannot tell the story of Georgia Archive and its successor Provenance. The numbers simply represent the dreams, ideas, and hard work of the journal's editors, staff, and editorial board members and the commitment of the Society of Georgia Archivists to the journal through thick and thin in its thirty-year history.

"If At First You Don't Succeed": Blacksheer, Menefee & Stein, A Second Appraisal, Carol Ellis, Russell D. James

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Processing large collections can present a challenge to archivists. When a large collection consists of case files from a law firm, issues can arise that few archivists have experience in managing. Despite the special concerns that must be addressed in managing a large collection of legal records, archivists have a strong interest in these collections because of the historical relevance of cases the firms handle or particular clients the firms represent.

What Were We Thinking? A Call To Embrace Reappraisal And Deaccessioning, Mark A. Greene Jan 2002

What Were We Thinking? A Call To Embrace Reappraisal And Deaccessioning, Mark A. Greene

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Mark Shelstad at the University of Wyoming has summed up the archival profession's apparent attitude toward deaccessioning by referring to it as "a word never to be uttered aloud." If his observation is true, this article intends to help shatter the silence. I recommend that the archival profession embrace reappraisal and deaccessioning as basic, important, and effective collection management tools-integrally related to collecting policies, documentation goals, appraisal, space allocation, processing, and reference. Reappraisal and deaccessioning should be viewed as the archival equivalent of "mom and apple pie."

Sharing Resources In The World Of Downsizing: A Dialog, Susan Kienzler, Gerald F. Patout Jr. Jan 2002

Sharing Resources In The World Of Downsizing: A Dialog, Susan Kienzler, Gerald F. Patout Jr.

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

During this age of shrinking resources and escalating demands, downsizing can affect cultural agencies as well as businesses. In the process, seemingly disparate organizations sometimes form an alliance that creates the elusive quality called synergy, which the dictionary defines as a "mutually advantageous conjunction of distinct participants or elements." The Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans Louisiana and The Historic New Orleans Collection, very different institutions that nonetheless share a commitment to documenting New Orleans and Louisiana history, established just such a conjunction when the Ursuline Sisters began refocusing their resources on their core mission in the 1990s.

What A Woven Web: Archives, Websites, And The Coming Legacy Of "Light Gray Literature", Earle E. Spamer Jan 2002

What A Woven Web: Archives, Websites, And The Coming Legacy Of "Light Gray Literature", Earle E. Spamer

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Website content is notoriously ephemeral. Its electronic existence is in communication with its components at one moment, gone at the next. A solution to preserving that content is to "permanently archive" the entire website. This raises concerns about technological accessibility and longevity. A website can also manifest itself as a dispersed collection of printed pages and downloaded electronic files redistributed amongst the paper and electronic records of individuals and organizations. What distinguishes that which is the record of an individual or an organization from the flotsam of reprinted and hyperlinked ephemera? Are archivists preparing appraisal methods for websites and their …

Archival Donor Relations And Development: Keeping A Balance, Carla M. Summers Jan 2002

Archival Donor Relations And Development: Keeping A Balance, Carla M. Summers

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

One of the central pleasures of archival work is developing relationships with donors of materials. These people are extraordinary and their activities have changed society. Donors of materials in the author's experience have included an artist whose journals capture the development of a creative vision for his work and his teaching, a famous broadcaster lively only when the microphone was on, politicians who have made great sacrifices to be of service but found great rewards, a famous writer who regards his manuscripts as a bank account he can draw on in his old age, farmers working to preserve the family …

Judicial Activism: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Arthur D. Hellman Jan 2002

Judicial Activism: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Arthur D. Hellman

Articles

No matter how judges are selected, sooner or later some unfortunate candidate will be labeled a "judicial activist." One has to wonder: Does the term have any identifiable core meaning? Or is it just an all-purpose term of opprobrium, reflecting whatever brand of judicial behavior the speaker regards as particularly pernicious? Implicit in this question are several important issues about the role of courts in our democratic society.

I take my definition from Judge Richard Posner, who describes activist decisions as those that expand judicial power over other branches of the national government or over state governments. Unlike other uses …

Technology, Libraries And The Internet: A Comparison Of The Impact Of The Printing Press And World Wide Web, Gentry Lankewicz Holbert Jan 2002

Technology, Libraries And The Internet: A Comparison Of The Impact Of The Printing Press And World Wide Web, Gentry Lankewicz Holbert

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

In thinking about technology and libraries, what struck me most is that we are living and experiencing a great turning point in history. "May you live in interesting times" is an ancient Chinese curse. Interesting times indeed, with all their glory, advantages, and pitfalls. We are still in the process of discovering what to do with new technology in the dissemination of information.

With the dawn of the Internet, computer automation, and intricate databases, I feel that, as a librarian, I am at the helm of the true information age. And how interesting to be here at the Vernadsky Library, …

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick Jan 2002

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick

Honors Papers

This thesis primarily deals with how the ongoing political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe have affected one particular group, the Roma or Gypsies. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many initially greeted the radical reconfiguration of hegemonic governmental structures with nationalist zeal, and the democratization of socialist regimes was universally hailed as a victory for all. But for the Roma, a historically persecuted pariah group continually surrounded by misconceptions and Orientalist stereotypes, the radical transformation to "Western" capitalism and democracy must not be viewed in such a positive light. As an ethnic group the Roma exhibit a wide-ranging …

Correlation Of Stress And Predisposition In Onset Of Illness In Masters Of Social Work Students, Lloyd Gregory Jones, Cynthia Ann Plampin Jan 2002

Correlation Of Stress And Predisposition In Onset Of Illness In Masters Of Social Work Students, Lloyd Gregory Jones, Cynthia Ann Plampin

Theses Digitization Project

This study addressed the specific problem of whether there is a significant correlation between stress and the onset of predisposed disease. Because most graduate programs are stressful and it is known that several social work graduate students in one cohort at CSUSB were diagnosed with diabetes as well as migraines and depression, the population for this study was Master's of Social Work (MSW) students at California State University, San Bernardino, (CSUSB).

Family Supportive Benefits And Their Effect On Experienced Work-Family Conflict, Alison Anna Maitlen Jan 2002

Family Supportive Benefits And Their Effect On Experienced Work-Family Conflict, Alison Anna Maitlen

Theses Digitization Project

The goal of this study was to provide a link between the family-supportive benefits offered by an employer, and the work-family conflict experienced by that organization's employees. In order for employee outcomes such as job satisfaction to remain high, the work-family conflict experienced by the employee needs to remain low. One way to possibly lower the amount of work-family conflict experienced is to offer family-supportive benefits.

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith Jan 2002

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "This chapter has more than one goal. First, I want to introduce readers to the apparatus of practices, institutions and virtues (PIV) that helps us understand what virtues are. Second, I want to explore the notion of politics a little, to see what its main problem is. (I will claim, perhaps surprisingly, that business management is largely a variation of politics.) Third, I want to reintroduce civility and suggest that it is an important contributor to solving the political problem (and problems of management).

Throughout this chapter, I will emphasize process. As we shall see, process is integrated in …

Tangible Pictures: Viewpoint Effects And Linear Perspective In Visually Impaired People, Morton A. Heller, Deneen D. Brackett, Eric Scroggs, Heather Steffen, Kim Heatherly, Shana Salik

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Perception of raised-line pictures in blindfolded-sighted, congenitally blind, late-blind, and low-vision subjects was studied in a series of experiments. The major aim of the study was to examine the value of perspective drawings for haptic pictures and visually impaired individuals. In experiment 1, subjects felt two wooden boards joined at 458, 908, or 1358, and were instructed to pick the correct perspective drawing from among four choices. The first experiment on perspective found a significant effect of visual status, with much higher performance by the low-vision subjects. Mean performance for the congenitally blind subjects was not significantly different from that …

Promoting Student Learning Through Peer Tutoring - A Case Study, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca Jan 2002

Promoting Student Learning Through Peer Tutoring - A Case Study, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

The literature abounds with information about peer tutoring and the benefits that it can bring to student learning. This case study sought to explore ways of using peer tutoring to enhance the learning experience of a group of higher education students in a multimedia course, who had access to learning resources in an online environment. It illustrates how easily and effectively the basic principles of peer tutoring can be adapted and implemented following explicit guidelines from the literature.

Production Sharing And Regional Integration, Sven W. Arndt Jan 2002

Production Sharing And Regional Integration, Sven W. Arndt

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Preferential trade agreements between dissimilar economies are known to encourage inter-industry specialization, but when they take place between developed and developing countries, they also change the nature of intra-industry trade by facilitating cross-border production sharing. When such arrangements liberalize foreign direct investment as well as trade, production is internationalized and component or intra-product trade increases. Using a standard trade model, this paper derives the conditions under which integration of this type improves competitiveness and raises employment, output, and welfare.

Surveying User Activity As A Tool For Space Planning In An Academic Library, Susan L. Silver, Lisa T. Nickel

W&M Libraries Publications

University libraries, and specifically the University of South Florida (USF) Library, are used for many different purposes that go beyond traditional library services. Activities users engage in while in the library should factor into decisions regarding the allocation of library space or expenditure of resources. The results of this survey illustrate how patrons are using the USF Library building on a daily basis. The anonymous, self-administered exit survey was administered for one week during two separate semesters. Users exiting the library building were given the opportunity to fill out a survey form. Data collected through this questionnaire, along with daily …

The University of the 21st century is in the throes of a paradigm shift, breaking free of the last century's discipline-bound model of education. VCU's Strategic Plan clearly articulates this forward-thinking concept: "....to promote interdisciplinary studies within the University, to bring new perspectives to bear on complex problems, and mobilize creative energies and expertise in meeting the needs of society and individuals through its unique role as Virginia's major urban university." In addition, the Strategic Plan goes on to envision the Honors Program as a "leader for excellence in undergraduate education''. Our project utilizes the Honors Program to create interdisciplinary …

Relational Aggression In Early Adolescent Girls, Sara M. Bucknam Jan 2002

Relational Aggression In Early Adolescent Girls, Sara M. Bucknam

Graduate Research Papers

There are differences in aggressive behavior between early adolescent boys and girls. Girls use relational aggressive methods to gain control over their peers. In general, schools do not directly address this form of aggression. School counselors are in the position to reduce relational aggression in schools. Assessment must first be performed in order to address the level of aggression in girls. This can be completed through questionnaires or focus groups. There are several prevention and intervention methods that be incorporated in schools. These methods can reduce relational aggression in early adolescent girls.
