Research outputs pre 2011

Delivery of quality educational services and opportunities is becoming increasingly more complex as Web-based learning tools and support structures continue to evolve. Although much effort is devoted to examining the use of technology to teach course content, an emerging area of some importance in online teaching is how to enhance the student experience of learning and communicating online. Associated with this is the creation of social and supportive environments for learning when there is little face-to-face contact between distance learners and their teachers. This paper provides a framework and a set of strategies that can be used to create a …

A Question Of Balance: Using Self And Peer Assessment Effectively In Teamwork, Joseph Luca, Catherine E Mcloughlin

Research outputs pre 2011

These include team skills, problem solving skills, decisionmaking skills, communication skills, information literacy skills, time management skills and many others. To develop such skills, tertiary learners have to engage in tasks that are likely to help students reflect on their own success in completing tasks, and that of their peers. In the literature on learning and self-regulation, self and peer assessment are important strategies used to help develop these skills as well as helping to promote skill transfer to the workplace. On-line learning …

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Orthostatic tolerance is reduced in the heat-stressed human. The purpose of this project was to identify whether skin-surface cooling improves orthostatic tolerance. Nine subjects were exposed to 10 min of 60° head-up tilting in each of four conditions: normothermia (NT-tilt), heat stress (HT-tilt), normothermia plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (NT-tiltcool), and heat stress plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (HT-tiltcool). Heating and cooling were accomplished by perfusing 46 and 15°C water, respectively, though a tube-lined suit worn by each subject. During HT-tilt, four of nine subjects developed presyncopal symptoms resulting in the termination …

Emerging Trends In Fee-Based Information Delivery, Yem Fong, Suzanne M. Ward, Tammy N. Dearie

Libraries Research Publications

Fee-based information services in libraries will face many challenges in continuing to offer value-added, cost-effective services to customers daring the opening decade of the new millennium. Some of the challenges are similar to those faced by other library units, but others are unique. Many of these are related to the proliferation of electronic resources and to the "do-it-yourself" approach customers have toward them. Other issues that must be addressed include shifts in client expectations; the demand for new types of information services and products; unresolved intellectual property issues; evolving means of providing access, delivery, and distribution; the need to form …

The New Basel Capital Accord: Making It Effective With Stronger Market Discipline, Harald Benink, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2002

The New Basel Capital Accord: Making It Effective With Stronger Market Discipline, Harald Benink, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

In January 2001 the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision proposed a new capital adequacy framework to respond to deficiencies in the 1988 Capital Accord on credit risk. The main elements or ‘pillars’ of the proposal are capital requirements based on the internal risk-ratings of individual banks, expanded and active supervision, and information disclosure requirements to enhance market discipline. We discuss the incentive effects of the proposed regulation. In particular, we argue that it provides incentives for banks to develop new ways to evade the intended consequences of the proposed regulation. Supervision alone cannot prevent banks from ‘gaming and manipulation’ of …

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade Jan 2002

Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade

Faculty Publications

The ability to produce and comprehend human language involves at least two processes: the storage of units and the computations performed on those units. The role that storage and computation play in the processing of inflectional morphology is highly debated. At one end of the spectrum is the full storage model, which holds that all known words, whether morphologically complex or not, have separate entries in the mental lexicon (Jackendoff 1975, Manelis and Tharp 1977, Butterworth 1983, Bybee 1985, 1988, Rumelhart and McClelland 1986, McClelland 1988, Stemberger 1994, Rueckl, Mikolinski, Raveh, Miner, and Mars 1997). Retaining Volunteers, Nancy A. Hudson Jan 2002

Retaining Volunteers, Nancy A. Hudson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study investigates what initially motivates a volunteer and if this motivation remains constant over time or if it changes. Using a modified Volunteer Functions Inventory, volunteers in a human service organization were questioned to determine their initial motivation and why they either remain active volunteers or no longer volunteer.

Volunteers have always been a component of the American culture. From the Minutemen of the American Revolution to today's volunteer firemen, volunteers are vital to the success of many organizations and programs. Recruiting volunteers can be as easy as "asking them", but once volunteers are recruited and trained, how does …

"For Freedom Of The Word", Thorvald Hansen Jan 2002

"For Freedom Of The Word", Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

1£ you were to peruse the pages of Danneuirke, the Danish language weekly, for the first half of the year 1923, you would find the pages filled with articles pro and con concerning the pastoral pledge (praesteloflet). The pastoral pledge is not to be confused with the pastoral vow to remain true to the Orristian faith. No one objected to this. The pledge, on the other hand, was a promise to remain true to the canonical books of Lutheranism. Some had refused to take this pledge and had, accordingly, been denied ordination. This matter was to be dealt with at …
