Das Wirtschaftsimperium Der Ethnisch Chinesischen Unternehmer In Südostasien Zwischen Kontinuität Und Wandel (In German), Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Long-Term Retention Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Thomas H. Teper, Beth Kraemer Jan 2002

Long-Term Retention Of Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Thomas H. Teper, Beth Kraemer

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper examines the increasing trend of universities to pursue electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) programs. Although the goal of most programs is similar, procedural variations impact a program’s long-term success. As primary research generators, responsibility for providing long-term access to unique materials must be borne by universities. However, this responsibility is in conflict with many ETD program goals, such as increased access and ease of production.

Income Distribution Dynamics With Endogenous Fertility, Daniel L. Chen, Michael Kremer Jan 2002

Income Distribution Dynamics With Endogenous Fertility, Daniel L. Chen, Michael Kremer

Faculty Scholarship

Developing countries with highly unequal income distributions, such as Brazil or South Africa, face an uphill battle in reducing inequality. Educated workers in these countries have a much lower birth rate than uneducated workers. Assuming children of educated workers are more likely to become educated, this fertility differential increaases the proportion of unskilled workers, reducing their wages, and thus their opportunity cost of having children, creating a vicious cycle. A model incorporating this effect generates multiple stedy-state levels of inequality, suggesting that in some circumstances, temporarily increasing access to educational opportunities could permanently reduce inequality. Empirical evidence suggests that the …

[Review Of] E. San Juan, Jr., Racism And Cultural Studies: Critiques Of Multiculturalist Ideology And The Politics Of Difference, Joel Wendland Jan 2002

[Review Of] E. San Juan, Jr., Racism And Cultural Studies: Critiques Of Multiculturalist Ideology And The Politics Of Difference, Joel Wendland

Ethnic Studies Review

Have academically fashionable cultural studies methodologies replaced mass social movements as political activity? This question is raised in E. San Juan, Jr.'s most recent study, Racism and Cultural Studies. Contemporary postmodern and postcolonial intellectual movements, because they valorize individualized discourses and relativist pluralism, have indeed "displaced the centrality of mass social movements" in the project of group liberation in San Juan's judgment.

Moving Mountains In The Lntercultural Classroom, Vivian Faith Martindale Jan 2002

Moving Mountains In The Lntercultural Classroom, Vivian Faith Martindale

Ethnic Studies Review

Today many Alaska Natives are seeking a higher education; however due to subtle differences in communication styles between the Native Alaskan student and Euro-American instructor, both students and educator frequently experience communication difficulties. This paper examines the differences in non-verbal communication, the assumption of similarities, stereotyping, preconceptions, and misinterpretations that may occur between Alaska Native and Euro-American cultures. University classrooms are becoming increasingly multicultural, and one teaching style may not be effective with all students. Those involved with education need to promote flexibility and awareness of cultural differences in order to achieve successful communication in the classroom.

This analysis is designed to answer several important questions regarding the impact of research dollars invested in the state of Arkansas. We begin by discussing the state of the state in terms of income measures and measures of educational attainment levels. Throughout this analysis, the state of Arkansas is compared to the U.S., to a group of peer states , and, initially, to the state of Mississippi.

Next, we examine the linkage between income and education. We also examine higher education in the state in terms of spending, access and research dollars. From this general description we examine the present …

The People Of Sicily: Studies Of Human Skeletal Remains And Of Human Biology From The Paleolithic To Modem Times, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

The analysis of human skeletal remains continues to be an important factor in the archaeological investigations of ancient cemeteries. Studies of human remains had become progressively marginalized in many parts of the classical world during the 20th century. Recently skeletal studies have re-emerged to become of increasing importance in reconstructing the culture history of Sicily. A review of the history of osteological and related investigations on Sicily, including publications and the recent initiation of several important studies in molecular biology, demonstrates the considerable progress made in recent years. This historical overview provides future researchers with a complete bibliography as well …

Subjective Assessment Of Sleep Quality Across The Menstrual Cycle In Women With Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Jonathan Bruce Santo, E. Chevrier, P. L'Esperance, D. B. Boivin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Existing evidence demonstrates that sleep structure varies across the menstrual cycle in healthy women (1). These variations could be more severe in women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) (2). In a previous study of healthy women, subjective sleep quality was shown to be constant across both phases of the menstrual cycle (3). The current study aims to test whether there exists a variation in subjective sleep quality of PMDD sufferers across the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle.

Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James Jan 2002

Pleasure Principles: The Social Construction Of Gambling And Sex Addiction Treatment, M. Kelly James

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The transformation of behavior into deviance requires many players, individuals, and institutions invested in the social construction process and its outcomes. Although considered private recreational matters by some, gambling and having sex are gaining spotlight in the addiction arena. With the growing availability of casino entertainment, lotteries, OTB venues, prostitution, internet pornography, and 900 numbers, gambling and sex are interpreted, labeled, and treated by addiction recovery specialists. Using ethnographic methods and face-to-face interviews, I explore a southern community’s institutions and practitioners providing services to gambling and sex addicts. I examine the community’s discourse and its methods for defining and controlling …

Battlefield Oddities: Explaining Two Minié Balls From Pea Ridge National Military Park, Don Arp Jr. Jan 2002

Battlefield Oddities: Explaining Two Minié Balls From Pea Ridge National Military Park, Don Arp Jr.

Nebraska Anthropologist

Two minié ball bullets, each with a different caliber and similar longitudinal lines were recovered at Pea Ridge National Military Park during the fieldwork conducted there in March 2001. Thefunction of these lines was unknown. Several hypotheses were advanced to explain the Irfarkings. However, through detailed mathematic and microscope analysis, it has been determined that the lines were made by the same process and machine and may have served as a point of attachment for an experimental cartridge made of either metal, cloth, or paper. The bullets may have been part of a pre-Civil War experiment and found action in …
