Indigenous Peoples, American Federalism, And The Supreme Court, David E. Wilkins Jan 2002

Indigenous Peoples, American Federalism, And The Supreme Court, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

As America breathes a sigh of relief in the afterglow of the pyrotechnics associated with the first post-September 11 July 4, pondering its global status as as the leading agent in its self-proclaimed "War on Terrorism," and its domestic situation with a "War on Federalism" raging between the Supreme Court's redefined notion of states' rights and federal authority, it seems a propitious time to ask where indigenous nations fit in this warlike atmosphere, given that the history of Indian/U.S. relations involved a fair amount of war-related activities.

Price Convergence On World Commodity Markets: Fact Or Fiction, James O. Bukenya, Walter C. Labys Jan 2002

Price Convergence On World Commodity Markets: Fact Or Fiction, James O. Bukenya, Walter C. Labys

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Recent attention to the use of commodity market derivatives as a vehicle for reducing the price risks of commodity exporting developing countries has renewed interest in the behavior of primary commodity prices separated by space. For some time a common belief has existed that commodity prices have converged over the last several decades on world markets. Increases in communications, central bank activities and globalization are cited as reasons as to why prices in spatially dispersed markets should become closer. However, the interrelations between business cycles and price instability are likely to reduce this possibility. To analyze this hypothesis, we utilize …

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub Jan 2002

Scale And Unit Specification Influences In Harvest Scheduling With Maximum Area Restrictions, Alan T. Murray, Andrés Weintraub

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines alternative approaches for representing a forest region to be scheduled for harvesting, where the primary concerns are maximizing return and imposing a maximum contiguous area of disturbance restriction. One approach assumes that any two adjacent management units exceed a regulated maximum area of disturbance. An alternative approach recognizes that management units may be substantially smaller than the maximum area restriction, so simultaneously disturbing two neighboring units does not necessarily represent a maximum area violation. The distinguishing feature of these two approaches is the way in which a forest is spatially represented. A single time period, 351 management …

National Sources Of Leadership In 3g M-Business Applications: A Framework And Evidence From Three Global Regions, Mark Lehrer, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Nir Kshetri Jan 2002

National Sources Of Leadership In 3g M-Business Applications: A Framework And Evidence From Three Global Regions, Mark Lehrer, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Nir Kshetri

College of Business Faculty Publications

Countries such as Finland and Sweden have exhibited long-established patterns of leadership in mobile telecommunications in general, while Japan's NTT DoCoMo represents an early national-level exemplar of a major m-commerce business system. The task of identifying and profiling the types of national leadership patterns likely to prevail in 3G wireless networks of Europe, Asia, and elsewhere, however, is a challenging one. This is because new technological and other forces are coming into play in the post-GSM world. In this paper, we present a framework and some evidence to show the potential national leadership patterns in 3G mbusiness applications in Asia-Pacific, …

Making Sense Of Leased Popular Literature Collections, Kerri Odess-Harnish Jan 2002

Making Sense Of Leased Popular Literature Collections, Kerri Odess-Harnish

All Musselman Library Staff Works

There is a well-publicized debate in the library field on whether or not it should be an academic library’s responsibility to collect and preserve popular culture materials. Budget constraints, space issues, and the “quality” of these materials, are all widely documented concerns as to why popular culture materials—especially popular literature titles—are still not making their way into an academic library’s permanent collection. This study describes a survey of 22 academic libraries throughout the country that use a leased popular literature collection in addition to or instead of purchasing popular literature titles for their permanent collection. The study was designed to …

Informed Consent: From Good Intentions To Sound Practices—A Report Of A Seminar, Susan Y. Wood, Barbara Friedland, C. Elizabeth Mcgrory

Reproductive Health

This report is a summary of presentations and discussions at a seminar entitled “Informed Consent: From Good Intentions to Sound Practices.” This two-day seminar brought together 65 individuals from nine countries in May 2001 to discuss challenges of informed consent in research. The goal of the meeting was to put informed consent into historical and contemporary perspective and to explore ways that the barriers to effective implementation can be overcome. The underlying premise of the seminar was that, as the issues around doing ethical research in health will only grow in scope and complexity, even when those who sponsor and …

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip Jan 2002

Influence Of Locus Of Control On Court Attendance, Anna Cutlip

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of the present study was to discover whether there is a relationship between locus of control and court attendance. Data were collected from 95 inmates residing in a southern Louisiana jail. It was expected that a person with an internal locus of control would choose to comply with court attendance requirements because of the belief that he may affect the outcome, while another individual with an external locus of control would passively respond through absence because the outcome is believed to be controlled by chance, luck, or fate. The Prison Locus of Control scale was employed to measure …

Pot-Au-Feu Japan: Foods And Weddings, Satomi Fukutomi Jan 2002

Pot-Au-Feu Japan: Foods And Weddings, Satomi Fukutomi

LSU Master's Theses

As Japan underwent rapid modernization and economic expansion after World War II, its cultural complex transformed into a postmodern mingling of Western and Eastern cultures, merging modern and antiquated tradition (Heine 1995:29). The Japanese have absorbed many Western traditions without immigrating, or living outside of their own (Eastern) society; Japanese marriage rituals exhibit such Eastern and Western cultural minglings. Wedding receptions, regarded as mini-drama, contain traditions of old—material taboos, inedible wedding cakes, beer ceremony, the importance of the color white, as well as blended traditional-modern acts such as toasting champagne while wearing a kimono, and gift-giving rituals incorporating famous American …

Spaced-Retrieval Effects On Name-Face Recognition In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease, Karri Sikes Hawley Jan 2002

Spaced-Retrieval Effects On Name-Face Recognition In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease, Karri Sikes Hawley

LSU Master's Theses

Six older adults with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) were trained to recall a name-face association using the spaced-retrieval method. We administered six training sessions over a two-week period. On each trial, participants selected a target photograph and stated the target name, from eight other photographs, at increasingly longer retention intervals. Results yielded a positive effect of spaced-retrieval training for name-face recognition. All participants were able to select the target photograph and state the target’s name for longer periods of time within and across training sessions. A live person transfer task was administered to determine whether the name-face association, trained by …

The Use Of Preexisting Clothing In Current High Fashion(2000-2002), Gillian David Sims Jan 2002

The Use Of Preexisting Clothing In Current High Fashion(2000-2002), Gillian David Sims

LSU Master's Theses

The fashion system has historically looked to art for inspiration. For the greater part of history, this inspiration has been purely visual. However, with the advent of Modern Art, the formal qualities of art are often merely visual representations of some underlying theoretical position. As the fashion system seeks inspiration from this new art, an examination of what aspects, if any, of these underlying theoretical positions are carried into fashion becomes necessary. To not do so, is to forego a complete reading of the fashion objects being currently produced. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of …

Maine Code Of Election Ethics, Gregory P. Gallant

Maine Policy Review

In the Margaret Chase Smith Essay, Gregory Gallant discusses the voluntary Maine Code of Election Ethics, sponsored and organized by the University of Maine’s Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center and the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan. The code is a voluntary effort designed to elevate political discourse in Maine’s federal and gubernatorial elections. Gallant reflects on the ways in which this code reinforces Margaret Chase Smith’s recognition of the critical role played by civic engagement in American society.

Expanding Our Boundaries With Information Literacy, Patricia Senn Breivik

The Christian Librarian

Years ago I had a calling to a special ministry, but I didn't think of it that way. At the time it seemed more a desire, whereas callings had to do with going into overseas missionary work or into a full time Christian ministry.

My calling came a few years after the birth of my son when I was working with a capital campaign for the United Presbyterian Church. The $50 million dollar campaign was coming to an end, and that meant my job would soon be over. Although I was offered a higher-level position with the Foundation - one …

Using Latent Semantic Analysis To Assess Reader Strategies, Joseph P. Magliano, Katja Wiemer-Hastings, Keith K. Millis, Brenton D.. Muñoz, Danielle Ncnamara

Psychology Faculty Publications

We tested a computer-based procedure for assessing reader strategies that was based on verbal protocols that utilized latent semantic analysis (LSA). Students were given self-explanation-reading training (SERT), which teaches strategies that facilitate self-explanation during reading, such as elaboration based on world knowledge and bridging between text sentences. During a computerized version of SERT practice, students read texts and typed self-explanations into a computer after each sentence. The use of SERT strategies during this practice was assessed by determining the extent to which students used the information in the current sentence versus the prior text or world knowledge in their self-explanations. …

Do Exchange Rate Regimes Affect Countries' Economic Growth And Inflation?, Yen Shern Chew Jan 2002

Do Exchange Rate Regimes Affect Countries' Economic Growth And Inflation?, Yen Shern Chew

Honors Papers

The main focus of this paper is to answer the question of whether the exchange rate regime adopted by a country affects its economic growth (the measurement of output growth used is real per capita GDP growth) and inflation. There has been previous work done which looked at the same question; however, different authors have drawn different conclusions. As Levy-Yeyati and Sturzenegger (2002) point out, previous studies trying to relate exchange rate regimes to macroeconomic performance have only had relatively weak empirical findings. They attribute this to the possibility that the IMF's de jure classification, based on what regime countries …
