Substance Abuse Treatment: Substance Abuse Counselors' Belief Systems And How These Beliefs Impact Treatment, Ann Crabb
Dissertations
The treatment of substance abuse is an anomaly within the mental health field. Historically, the treatment of addicted people has relied more on the personal experiences of those who have recovered than empirical findings (Shaffer, 1987). The founding of Alcoholics Anonymous sparked the creation of a belief system regarding substance abuse and recovery that, despite contradictory research findings, remains strong today (McElrath, 1997). This study was conducted to explore the belief systems of both recovering and nonrecovering substance abuse counselors today to determine what their beliefs are, how these beliefs were formed, and whether their belief system has changed over …
A Foundation For Democratic Transition: The Evolution Of Korean Civil Society 1972-1987, Sukhee Lee
A Foundation For Democratic Transition: The Evolution Of Korean Civil Society 1972-1987, Sukhee Lee
Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to explain the evolutionary process of Korean civil society throughout the 1970s and 1980s as a foundation for democratization. I argue that the changing character of civil society in the mid-1980s was a necessary condition for democratic transition in 1987. Thus, this study focuses on how an ineffective civil society became sufficiently effective to be a deciding factor in Korea’s democratic transition, and seeks to define what factors led to the change. In the process of development of civil society, several factors, such as political culture, economic development, political opportunity structure, and the external environment, affected the …
Social Anxiety: Attentional Bias In Reaction To Emotional Faces Before And After Participation In A College Level Public Speaking Course, Scott Walter Maieritsch
Social Anxiety: Attentional Bias In Reaction To Emotional Faces Before And After Participation In A College Level Public Speaking Course, Scott Walter Maieritsch
Dissertations
This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of a semester-long public speaking course in reducing the self-reported levels of communication anxiety and social anxiety among college students enrolled in such a course. The current study also sought to replicate and extend a recent line of research that has demonstrated that highly socially anxious individuals show an attentional bias away from emotional faces under conditions of social-evaluative threat. The current study extended this line of research by conducting the same reaction time procedure with participants in a pretest/post-test design. The project was designed to determine if groups (rating high vs. …

Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer
Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has found a correlation between death anxiety and self esteem. Researchers have found that both self-esteem and death anxiety play a significant role in an individual's behavior.
The purpose of this study was to investigate a correlation, if any, between death anxiety and self esteem using death related scenarios. It was hypothesized the high death anxiety groups will have lower self-esteem than the low death anxiety group, and that the low self-esteem group will have higher death anxiety than the high self-esteem group.
Results of an ANOVA indicate that there is a significant difference between the high death …

The Myth Of The Five-Day Forecast: A Study Of Television Weather Accuracy And Audience Perceptions Of Accuracy In Columbus, Ohio, Jeffrey M. Demas
The Myth Of The Five-Day Forecast: A Study Of Television Weather Accuracy And Audience Perceptions Of Accuracy In Columbus, Ohio, Jeffrey M. Demas
Communications Faculty Scholarship
Television weather has not been studied in a communication journal since 1982, despite technological advances and a reliance on forecasts by a transient public. This study measured accuracy of weather forecasts in central Ohio and found that stations were very accurate in predicting within 48 hours, but extended forecasts were quite inaccurate. Interviews with local television weathercasters revealed that they use the extended forecast as a marketing tool. Telephone interviews with 315 central Ohio residents revealed that they not only rely on the five-day forecasts, but believe them to be accurate.Television was cited as the dominant resource for weather information, and a …

Service Learning's Influence On Multicultural Goals: Among Elite High School Girls: An Interpretative Case Study, Gina Miller Blackburn
Service Learning's Influence On Multicultural Goals: Among Elite High School Girls: An Interpretative Case Study, Gina Miller Blackburn
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
This qualitative study was designed to explore the experiences of high school girls in a service-learning class that I co-taught with my husband, Jeffrey Stephens. an economics and World Civilizations teacher at the Bayou School. I observed the participants during their three-week service class entitled The Economy's Impact Upon Its Citizenry when they served at a Salvation Anny community center and during their class discussions. I also interviewed all of the students before the class began, three times during the class. and twice after the class was over. The students kept journals throughout the class and wrote a case study …
Toward An Expanded Conceptualization Of Transformative Learning: A Case Study Of International Service-Learning In Nicaragua, Richard C. Kiely
Toward An Expanded Conceptualization Of Transformative Learning: A Case Study Of International Service-Learning In Nicaragua, Richard C. Kiely
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
This dissertation research stems from both practical and theoretical problems related to understanding the nature of transformation in international service-learning. In terms of the practical problems, the primary motivation for conducting this study had to do with pedagogical challenges associated with fostering adult college students' transformational learning as the coordinator and instructor of Tompkins Cortland Community College's international service learning program (TC3-NICA)1 over the past eight years. A review of theoretical and empirical literature in the fields of adult learning, service-learning, and intercultural learning did not adequately address the concerns that ( had about the significant and problematic nature …

A Study Of Community College Student Attitudes Related To Service Learning, Dana Lee Haines
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
The fourfold purpose of this study was to determine if (1) student attitudes toward community service, (2) student attitudes toward civic involvement, (3) student attitudes about life skills, and (4) student attitudes toward civic engagement and service learning differed based on enrollment in a course with a service learning component or enrollment in a course without a service learning component. A related purpose for students enrolled in a course with a service learning component was to determine if the service learning component had an impact on students' future educational or career plans.
The study was conducted at Mesa Community College …
Empowering Students Through Community Action, Natasha Diane Yanez
Empowering Students Through Community Action, Natasha Diane Yanez
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
Service Learning is a pedagogy in which the student must participate directly in a service-oriented project, which addresses a real community need. This study focused on the effect of service learning in the curriculum. Research was conducted over service learning, its implementation, and its effects. In addition, the study looks at how one junior high school implemented service learning into their curriculum and the difficulties involved in creating a more intense program.
It was discovered that service learning was often not integrated into the curriculum as expected, teachers often did not require students to reflect on their experiences, and teachers …
Impacts And Effects Of Service-Learning On High School Students, Bryan Richard Rossi
Impacts And Effects Of Service-Learning On High School Students, Bryan Richard Rossi
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
In the ten years this researcher has spent preparing to complete the requirements for a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Administration, he has come to see some of the transformations society and education have gone through. This has been fascinating to examine in parallel the educational transformations and human development of work and research in various schools. On the one hand, there have been the developments of the "macro-education" world through the Department of Children, Families and Learning, the state legislature, the news media, and the role of the university in education policy. On the other hand, there have been …
Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos
Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Cross-cultural psychology has played a very important role in identifying, describing, and even explaining psychological structures that are involved in the perception of interpersonal behavior. This chapter reviews work based on the research paradigm of subjective culture, which establishes that at least three interpersonal dimensions have been identified across cultures and historical periods: Association-Dissociation, Superordination-Subordination, and Intimacy-Formality. These three dimensions are often conceptualized as psychological universals, a notion that raises the question of the origins of the dimensions. By starting with the fundamental assumption that all social behavior is based on resource exchange, the chapter reviews a framework that attempts …

Jeremy Bloom, The Ncaa, And Hypocrisy, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It was reported yesterday that Jeremy Bloom one of the top mogul skiers in the U.S. is seeking an injunction against the NCAA. Bloom wants to play football at the University of Colorado this year but NCAA regulations will not allow it because Bloom has received money for personal appearances, endorsements, and modeling. These are related to his skiing skills, not his football prowess. Although the NCAA will allow an athlete to sign a professional contract in one sport and compete in another sport, NCAA bylaws allow them to receive money from other pro sports only if that money is …

Survey Attitudes Toward Stem Cell Research, Ejinkonye C. Anekwe
Theses and Dissertations
In the following research study, a self-administered questionnaire was utilized to assess opinions regarding embryonic stem cell research based on three objectives: willingness to accept stem cells, educational background, and religion. A total of 1 13 fixed-alternative questionnaires were distributed to a diverse group of respondents. Nonprobability sampling using the accidental approach was performed. Support of stem cell research was dependent on Question 9, which asked what people thought about the cloning of human embryonic stem cells. The data revealed that most respondents from all groups surveyed opposed stem cell research. Neither education nor religion was a major determinant in …
Ethics In Local Television Newsrooms: A Comparison Of Assignment Editors And Producers, Chris W. Allen, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
Ethics In Local Television Newsrooms: A Comparison Of Assignment Editors And Producers, Chris W. Allen, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
Communication Faculty Publications
This paper examines the attitudes of local television news assignment editors toward ethics in the newsroom. A large majority of producers say newsrooms should have a code of ethics or discussions of ethics, that ethics should not change with the story and that newsroom ethics are being eroded by pressure to get ratings. It goes on to compare these attitudes with those of news producers from an earlier survey. Assignment editors also ranked how often discussion of certain ethical situations take place in the newsroom.

Hispanic Psychology: A 25-Year Retrospective Look, Amado M. Padilla
Hispanic Psychology: A 25-Year Retrospective Look, Amado M. Padilla
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Hispanic psychology has its roots in ethnic psychology and in cross-cultural psychology. The basic premise is that it is a valuable enterprise both theoretically and empirically to study the behavior of Hispanics. Over the past 25 years, research in Hispanic psychology has given way to a new scholarship or paradigm that calls for the recognition of intragroup variation which values within-group comparisons rather than relying exclusively on between-group effects. Acculturation and biculturalism have taken on special significance in Hispanic psychology. Further, Hispanic psychology must also consider the effects of racism and oppression on people and how these affect ethnic identity, …
Directions In Gender Research In American Indian Societies: Two Spirits And Other Categories, Beatrice Medicine
Directions In Gender Research In American Indian Societies: Two Spirits And Other Categories, Beatrice Medicine
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Indigenous social role categories that represent third and fourth gender characteristics, such as the Lakota (Sioux) winkte and the Dino (Navajo) n and other Native terms, mark the status of these individuals. However, they are often blanketed by the term, berdache, in social science literature. Contextualization in an ethnographic frame is essential to greater comprehension of these roles. A critical review of contemporary research and the writings of the Native occupants of these categories has resulted in an all encompassing term: "Two Spirits." Coterminously, Native terms for lesbians are also emerging. However, all Native gay males and lesbians have …
Cultural Interpretation Of Dying And Death In A Non-Western Society: The Case Of Nigeria, Frank Eyetsemitan
Cultural Interpretation Of Dying And Death In A Non-Western Society: The Case Of Nigeria, Frank Eyetsemitan
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Using Western theories and perspectives as models, this chapter discusses the cultural interpretation of dying and death in a non-Western society. Also discussed, based on the historical, political, and cultural history of Nigeria, are the implications of dying and death for death preparation, the problem of death- causation diseases without external symptoms, and the special plight of widows. Suggestions are made on how to change current practices to alleviate the conditions of widows. The Nigerian experience provides a model for other non-Western societies with similar historical, political, and cultural backgrounds.
Cross-Cultural Research On The Five-Factor Model Of Personality, Robert R. Mccrae
Cross-Cultural Research On The Five-Factor Model Of Personality, Robert R. Mccrae
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The Five-Factor Model (FFM) is a comprehensive taxonomy of personality traits, which are tendencies to show consistent patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Although it was originally identified in the United States, the model appears to describe personality structure well in a wide variety of cultures, suggesting that personality trait structure is universal. Age changes--decreases in Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness and increases in Agreeableness and Conscientiousness from adolescence to adulthood--also appear to be universal, as are gender differences. Current studies comparing the mean levels of personality traits across cultures show systematic patterns, but their interpretation is uncertain. The FFM is …

What Works In Economic Development Practice? An Evaluation Of Strategies & Tools, Ziona Austrian, Jill Norton
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
What Works in Economic Development reviews evaluation literature relevant to economic development strategies. While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. It also demonstrates how positive results can be realized. A “what works” matrix follows the review of the evaluation studies. The matrix highlights the significant findings and key lessons that can be learned from this work.
Contested Suburbs: Space And Its Representation In Moral Panics, Stacey L. Simmons
Contested Suburbs: Space And Its Representation In Moral Panics, Stacey L. Simmons
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Over the last thirty years there has been modest investigation into the phenomenon of moral panic. Several high profile moral panics have been investigated by social scientists but with relatively little new theoretical developments. This research hypothesizes that there are two different forms of moral panic that have not been discerned by other researchers. I call these: metapanics and localized panics. In addition, in the last two decades a handful of well-respected theorists have drawn attention to the fact that social research is dominated by an historical perspective. Edward Soja. and Henri Lefebvre have been at the fore, but even …
The Value Of Inaugurals: Analysis Of Construction, Joseph M. Valenzano Iii
The Value Of Inaugurals: Analysis Of Construction, Joseph M. Valenzano Iii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of modem mass mediated presidential inaugurals was conducted through the use of close textual analysis of each speech as well as an historical analysis of the development of the mass media since the nation's birth. In an effort to identify the goals, themes and strategies used by presidents in their inaugurals, seven pre-Kennedy and every post-Kennedy first inaugural address were analyzed. Using the work of Campbell and Jamieson (1991) as a stepping stone for the identification of these themes, seven themes and their various strategies of enactment were uncovered. Each of these themes were found to be enacted …
Individual Differences In The Neurophysiology Of Creativity, Jonna Kwiatkowski
Individual Differences In The Neurophysiology Of Creativity, Jonna Kwiatkowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Theories dating back to the 1800's have suggested neurophysiological specialization as a key factor in creative production. A common theme in these theories is that greater flexibility in neurophysiological response to stimuli allows more creative individuals to customize their response to the task at hand (Martindale, 1999). In particular, more creative individuals are able to enter a more relaxed, free associative cognitive state when it is necessary for them to produce a creative solution (e.g., Kris, 1952; Mednick, 1962; Mendelsohn, 1976). There is empirical support for individual differences in neurophysiological state between more and less creative participants performing creative tasks …
