Review Of Mackenzie King And The Prairie West By Robert A. Wardhaugh, Allen Mills
Review Of Mackenzie King And The Prairie West By Robert A. Wardhaugh, Allen Mills
Great Plains Quarterly
William Lyon Mackenzie King was prime minister of Canada almost continuously between 1921 and his retirement in1948. The main exception was the Conservative government of R. B. Bennett between 1930 and 1935. Yet at the very same time, in all sorts of ways, the Prairie West was, apparently, not part of this victorious parade. The Prairie West instead chose to go a-whoring after strange, sectional, political gods of its own invention: first the Progressive farmers movement after 1921; then Social Credit after 1935; and finally the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, which formed, if we are to believe Seymour Martin Lipset, the …

Review Of Dissent In Wichita: The Civil Rights Movement In The Midwest, 1954-72 By Gretchen Cassel Eick, Timothy N. Thurber
Great Plains Quarterly
Community studies of the modern civil rights movement have tended to focus on the South or the Northeast, but Gretchen Eick makes a convincing case that important developments, long ignored by most scholars, were happening in the Midwest too.
Eick surveys a broad range of topics, including education, employment, housing, and relations between the national and local NAACP. Much of the story in Wichita resembles that in other parts of the nation. Real estate agents thwarted efforts at neighborhood integration. Local officials dragged their heels on school integration until pressure from the federal government forced change. The aircraft industry, the …

Review Of Handbook Of North American Indians Volume 13. Plains. Edited By Raymond J. Demallie, David J. Wishart

INDIANS AND ANTHROPOLOGISTS
To say that the Plains volume of the Smithsonian Institution's Handbook of North American Indians has been long awaited is a literal as well as a figurative verity. Research for the volume began in 1971, then stalled until 1985, when Raymond DeMallie took over as editor and reinvigorated the project. Still, progress remained slow until 1998, as other volumes in the series were given priority. Then an all-out push was made to complete the work: manuscripts written in the 1970s and 1980s were revised, often through the addition of a co-author, and the content was generally updated …

The Decline In Average Weekly Cinema Attendance, 1930-2000, Michelle C. Pautz

Since the beginnings of the motion picture industry, with the one small Edison studio in New Jersey in the early 1900s, America has fallen in love with films. One could argue and debate the reasons, employing everything from sociology to psychology to economics; but one thing is certain: This love affair has changed over the years. This change is perhaps most evident in the decline in the percentage of the United States population that goes to the cinema weekly. One interesting aspect of cinema attendance is that during the Great Depression, which swept the United States in the 1930s, a …

The Decision Of African American Students To Complete High School: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Larry Davis, Icek Ajzen, Jeanne Saunders, Trina Williams
Center for Social Development Research
A longitudinal study explored high-school completion among African Americans. Male and female high-school students aged 14 to 17 (N=166) completed a questionnaire based on the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991) early in their second year. Intentions to complete the year were accurately predicted from attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (R=0.71; p

Drop-Out From Individual Development Accounts: Prediction And Prevention, Mark Schreiner, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are a new policy instrument designed to help the poor save and accumulate assets. IDAs provide matches for savings used for home purchase, post-secondary education, or microenterprise. IDAs cannot help participants, however, if they drop out. What determines drop-out, and what can be done to help participants to stay in? Three findings emerge from an analysis of IDAs in the American Dream Demonstration. First, drop-out depends more on transaction costs and previous debt than on income. Second, program design --and match rates in particular--affect drop-out risk. Third, drop-out can be predicted with some accuracy, so IDA …

Health Needs In Two Ethnic Communities Of Humla District, Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay
Health Needs In Two Ethnic Communities Of Humla District, Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay
Anthropology Faculty Publications
This report summarizes findings from a primary health care baseline study conducted in September and October of 1999, in upper Humla district, Nepal. This study establishes measures of health conditions in Humla; and constitutes a baseline against which progress in improving the health services and conditions for local people may be measured. This report is an integral piece of the process of primary health care development in Humla, a remote region with scant record of health statistics at the village level. In addition to the Ministry of Health and its staff and partners, a number of NGOs are working in …

THE BLURRING OF LINES among special librarians and other information professionals makes the tracks that some conferences use seem artificial. After all, many librarians work as online experts, knowledge managers, and builders of electronic libraries--often all in one day. This became clear at the recent Information Today (IT) meetings in New York in May, which combined three previously separate shows: National Online, KnowledgeNets, and E-Libraries (see also InfoTech, LJ 6/15/02, p. 23). While there were plenty of redundancies, there were several useful sessions on web searching and electronic publishing.

Serve Sizes Of Grain Based Foods In Australia, P. G. Williams, B. Gibson, N. Smith
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
A survey was conducted of the recommended serve sizes used on the labelling of 807 grain based foods sold in Sydney stores in 2000. These values were compared with the serve sizes used in a variety of food selection guides, including the Australian Guide to Health Eating (AGHE). In most food categories there was a great deal of variation in the serve sizes recommended, sometimes up to 20 fold. The most consistent recommendations were for sliced breads, with most manufacturers recommending two slices as a serve, and ready-to-eat breakfast cereals (one cup). The median values for cereal products were mostly …

Income, Institutions, And Saving Performance In Individual Development Accounts, Michael Sherraden, Mark Schreiner, Sondra Beverly
Center for Social Development Research
This paper examines the relationship between income and saving performance in Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). We first discuss theories of saving. Next, for IDA participants in the American Dream Demonstration, we look at income sources and distribution, followed by tabulations of income and savings outcomes. Following this, we discuss results from regression analyses on savings outcomes. We find that savings amount did not increase with income and that the savings rate decreased with income. Although the data do not reveal exactly what caused this, we believe that institutional factors in IDA programs played an important role.
Review Of Ed Ruscha By Neal Benezra And Kerry Brougher, With A Contribution By Phyllis Rosenzweig, Daniel A. Siedell
Review Of Ed Ruscha By Neal Benezra And Kerry Brougher, With A Contribution By Phyllis Rosenzweig, Daniel A. Siedell
Great Plains Quarterly
This book, intended to accompany an international traveling retrospective exhibition, is a welcome contribution to understanding Ed Ruscha's important but underappreciated role in the complex and diverse history of postwar American art. Although he has long been regarded as one of the "important" contemporary artists who came to aesthetic maturity in the mid-1960s, why he is important has not been sufficiently demonstrated. This publication points the way.
The number and quality of reproductions of Rusch a's work are the book's most important contribution. The images alone demonstrate the sheer diversity and energy of Ruscha's aesthetic vocabulary, a vocabulary that is …

"She Had Never Humbled Herself" Alexandra Bergson And Marie Shabata As The "Real" Pioneers Of O Pioneers!,/I>, Douglas W. Werden

Willa Cather's O Pioneers! (1913) has traditionally been read within the twin contexts of Cather's pioneering childhood and her nostalgic reminiscences that glorify the lives of prairie settlers. These critics interpreted the novel in light of Walt Whitman's poem of the same name in Leaves of Grass, which celebrates the conquering American pioneer who "civilizes" the land for production.1 More recent critics have contextualized it within her family history, agricultural history, domestic plots, American migration, and women leaving the home.2 However, if we consider O Pioneers! in relation to the gender role redefinitions of Cather's adult life, …
