Navigating The Shoals Of Civic Education With Service-Learning: Ethical, Moral, And Political Constraints On Transformative Education, Don Hill Apr 2002

Navigating The Shoals Of Civic Education With Service-Learning: Ethical, Moral, And Political Constraints On Transformative Education, Don Hill

Civic Engagement

American democracy is threatened by an accelerating trend of disengagement from the fundamental responsibilities of citizenship. This disengagement is growing in all segments of society but is most pronounced in youth and young adults which makes it even more troubling. Many thoughtful educators argue persuasively that high quality service-learning can and should become a resource for tackling this problem, that it can stimulate youth to become active democratic citizens. They are, in my judgment, correct, but navigating the shoals of civic education with service-learning is difficult.

2002 Quality Of Life Survey - Orleans And Jefferson Parishes, Susan E. Howell Apr 2002

2002 Quality Of Life Survey - Orleans And Jefferson Parishes, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

During the four years from 1996 to 2000 voters in New Orleans were increasingly positive about the quality of life in the City. Today that trend has reversed. Although the overall perception is still positive, fewer voters than in 2000 say that the quality of life is getting better. Jefferson voters continue an upward trend in evaluations of their parish. Every year since 1994 more voters say the quality of life is getting better. In contrast to previous surveys when crime was clearly dominant as the "biggest problem" facing New Orleans, today nearly as many mention economic problems as mention …

Context Effects In Visual Length Perception: Role Of Ocular, Retinal, And Spatial Location, Yoav Arieh, Lawrence E. Marks

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In three experiments, we examined the transfer of orientation-contingent context effects between the eyes and across portions of the retina with or without variation in external spatial location. Previous research had shown that vertical lines are judged long, relative to horizontal lines, when the stimulus set comprises relatively long horizontals and short verticals (Contextual Condition B), as compared with the reverse when the stimulus set comprises relatively short horizontals and long verticals (Contextual Condition A). Consequently, the contextual set of stimuli influences the magnitude of the horizontal-vertical illusion (HVI), decreasing its size under Contextual Condition A and increasing its size …
