Financial Performance Of Insurance Companies Following Initial Public Offerings, Kulkanya Napompech Apr 2002

Financial Performance Of Insurance Companies Following Initial Public Offerings, Kulkanya Napompech

Doctoral Dissertations

The quality of insurance companies is a very significant societal issue. Policyholders pay premiums assuming indemnity of their potential losses. It is essential that an insurer be able to meet its contractual obligations when a loss occurs. An initial public offering provides an infusion of capital and an expansion of resources available to a firm. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the financial and operating impacts of initial public offerings during 1980–2000 on insurance companies.

Chapter 2 examines changes in operating performance of property/casualty insurance companies following initial public offerings. I find that following initial public offerings, …

The Relationships Between Biodata And Personality: How Different Is Different?, Lindsay A. Bousman Apr 2002

The Relationships Between Biodata And Personality: How Different Is Different?, Lindsay A. Bousman

Student Work

The relationships between personality measures and biodata measures were examined using a measure of the Big Five Factors of personality, and a newly created biodata measure. Each measure was used to predict academic achievement and job satisfaction. The biodata measure was created to mimic a factor structure similar to the five factors of personality, to allow a better comparison of the two measures. However, the biodata items were original (with combinations of previously used original items), and were developed for use in this study. Biodata items are typically multiple-choice, situational, and historical in nature, whereas personality items are typically based …

Recent Developments In The Balkans: Summary And Comment, James R. Payton Jr. Apr 2002

Recent Developments In The Balkans: Summary And Comment, James R. Payton Jr.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

In this paper, I will summarize several reports about achievements by United Nations organizations and the Kosovo Force [hereafter KFOR] in the Balkans during 2001. My summary will also include, from the same period, other reports about areas of concern in which these organizations have shown scant interest, despite pleas from leaders and representatives of the peoples in the region. The latter resulted in an unusual letter from the head of the Keston Institute in which he reflected on some of the failures, a letter from which I will present extended portions. Following that, I will add some reflections of …

The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

Multicultural Education In Head Start Classrooms, Cynthia Czerwin '02 Apr 2002

Multicultural Education In Head Start Classrooms, Cynthia Czerwin '02

Honors Projects

This research is used to determine whether Head Start addresses the cultural needs of its diverse clientele or if it assimilates its clients into the mainstream culture. It is based on the concept that culture affects how children learn. Culture is acquired through social interactions with parents and other social institutions. The connection of culture and learning is explained in the theories of Cooley, Mead, and Vygotsky. Cooley and Mead have two main theories of socialization; both examine how one acquires culture through social interactions. Vygotsky's theory describes how children develop cognitively. His theory is also based on social interactions.

The Effects Of Family, Social And Background Factors On Children's Educational Attainment, Megan De Serf '02 Apr 2002

The Effects Of Family, Social And Background Factors On Children's Educational Attainment, Megan De Serf '02

Honors Projects

In a perfect world, children of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and family types would not only have the opportunity to receive a higher education, but they would also take full advantage of these opportunities. The educational level of children in the ghettos of Chicago or St. Louis would be equal to their suburban counterparts. However, it is not a perfect world, and educational attainment of children and young adults from varying backgrounds differ greatly.

Czech Voucher Privatization: A Case Of Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Katia Hristova '02 Apr 2002

Czech Voucher Privatization: A Case Of Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Katia Hristova '02

Honors Projects

Voucher privatization, a kind of large-scale privatization, was of special importance. It was conducted by the Czech Government in order to redistribute property among the population in a situation of complete lack of domestic private capital. All citizens over the age of 18 had the opportunity to obtain a voucher book. However, by providing little information about the process, the Government was really aiming only at the knowledgeable citizens who would be successful entrepreneurs. Voucher privatization was also thought of as a way to speed up the transition in the economy.

The Relationship Between Economic Freedom And Soci-Economic Development, Anisha Madan '02 Apr 2002

The Relationship Between Economic Freedom And Soci-Economic Development, Anisha Madan '02

Honors Projects

The concept of economic freedom is not a novel one in economic theory. Since the time of Adam Smith, if not before, economists have believed that the freedom to choose and supply resources, compete in business, trade with others, and secure property rights are central ingredients of economic progress (North and Thomas, 1973). Adam Smith (1776-1937) explained how the invisible hand of the marketplace enhanced the wealth of nations. David Ricardo (1821-1912) advocated free trade as a means of producing economic growth. Milton Friedman said, "I believe that free societies have arisen and persisted only because economic freedom is so …

Roots And Shoots Of The H. Dan Heyn Vision: Indigenous Planting Design, 1950-1980, Elizabeth A. Heiny-Cogswell Apr 2002

Roots And Shoots Of The H. Dan Heyn Vision: Indigenous Planting Design, 1950-1980, Elizabeth A. Heiny-Cogswell

Masters Theses

Indigenous planting design, the practice of incorporating regional native plant species into new landscape projects, is little studied. This trend is counter to the more known and accepted American practice of using exotic ornamental plant species. This thesis studies the work and context of one Texas landscape architect, H. Dan Heyn. Beginning in the 1950's and continuing through the 1980's, Heyn became committed to, and specialized in, the use of indigenous plants in his landscape architectural design practice.

This investigation shows the beginning and importance in Texas of the idea to use indigenous plants, the tremendous task involved to study …

The Motivational Effects Of 3, 4-Methylendioxymethamphetamine On Responding Maintained By A Progressive-Ratio Schedule Of Water Delivery, Sean P. Laraway Apr 2002

The Motivational Effects Of 3, 4-Methylendioxymethamphetamine On Responding Maintained By A Progressive-Ratio Schedule Of Water Delivery, Sean P. Laraway

Masters Theses

Relative to their reinforcing and discriminative functions, the establishing operation (EO) function of drugs has received little attention from behavioral pharmacologists. This study investigated in rats the EO function of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) using a progressive-ratio (PR) 2 schedule of water delivery. Relative to vehicle control levels, Lower doses (1.0 and 1.8 mg/kp ip) had no effects, whereas the higher doses (3.2, 5.6 mg/kg ip) significantly decreased breaking points. In contrast to previous research, this study found no evidence that MDMA functioned as an EO for water. These results, along with findings from other studies using PR schedules, emphasize the …
