How Economists Cite Literature: Citation Analysis Of Two Core Pakistani Economic Journals, Ashraf Sharif, Khalid Mahmood Oct 2004

How Economists Cite Literature: Citation Analysis Of Two Core Pakistani Economic Journals, Ashraf Sharif, Khalid Mahmood

Libraries

Selected volumes of the Pakistan Development Review (PDR) and the Pakistan Economic and Social Review (PESR) were analysed to find the citation pattern of their articles. Eight volumes of each journal were selected, two volumes representing a decade. The results revealed that the PDR has been the most cited journal. The mean score of citations per article remained insignificantly different in the two core journals. More than 50 per cent of the citations from both journals were single-authored. More than 50 per cent of the citations were from non-journal sources, mainly books. Although citations from online sources were seen, it …

A Response To Marriage Made In Eden: A Pre-Modern Perspective For A Post-Christian World, John Tarwater Oct 2004

A Response To Marriage Made In Eden: A Pre-Modern Perspective For A Post-Christian World, John Tarwater

Business Administration Faculty Publications

In their most recent work on marriage, Alice Mathews and Gay Hubbard—professor and guest lecturer at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary respectively—explore Godʼs design and purpose for marriage. Having received positive reviews from several leading evangelical scholars, such as Stanley Grenz, Gordon Fee, and Vernon Grounds, Marriage Made in Eden warrants considerable attention. Because Mathews and Hubbardʼs book represents a significant argument supporting egalitarianism, it also deserves a serious response. In this article, I will concentrate my analysis on the bookʼs contribution as it relates to the role of women, which appears to be the driving issue for the authors. I will …

Irbism: Prejudice Against Institutional Review Boards, Donelson R. Forsyth Oct 2004

Irbism: Prejudice Against Institutional Review Boards, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Alexander Pope, who opined that "the proper study of man is man," did not have to convince an Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the wisdom of his words. Just this week I was told that I could not use the question "What city does your romantic partner live in?" to check if the subject was in a long-distant relationship (made the partner too identifiable). Earlier in the year a reviewer objected to asking students about their mother and father's parenting style (reports on the behavior of unconsented third parties). When I said I would recruit participants from classes, the reviewer …

Playhouse Square Center: Economic Impact And Contribution To Northeast Ohio, Robert Sadowski, Jill Norton, Ziona Austrian, Mark Rosentraub

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Although the value of these activities is difficult to quantify, …

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa Oct 2004

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Stock-Watson coincident index and its subsequent extensions assume a static linear one-factor structure for the component indicators. Such assumption is restrictive in practice, however, with as few as four indicators. In fact, such assumption is unnecessary if one defines a coincident index as an estimate of latent monthly real GDP. This paper considers VAR and factor models for latent monthly real GDP and other coincident indicators, and estimates the models using the observable mixed-frequency series. For US data, Schwartz’s Bayesian information criterion selects a two-factor model. The smoothed estimate of latent monthly real GDP is the proposed index.

Resilience And Emotional Depletion As Predictors Of Dyadic Satisfaction Of Psychologists In Pennsylvania, Kevin R. Ganey Oct 2004

Resilience And Emotional Depletion As Predictors Of Dyadic Satisfaction Of Psychologists In Pennsylvania, Kevin R. Ganey

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Although psychologists have been practicing for nearly one hundred years, relatively little research has been conducted on the impact of the profession upon the psychologist's personal life. Historically, most studies have attempted to determine whether the practice of psychology leads to burnout or impairment rather than what helps a psychologist to function well. A growing body of research on self-care places an emphasis on the personhood of the clinician and his or her ability to function well in practice and personal life (Alterman, 1998). The purpose of this study is to add to the growing body of literature that addresses …

How Do The Asian Economies Compete With Japan In The Us Market, China Exceptional? A Triangular Trade Approach, Hiro Ito, Yushi Yoshida Oct 2004

How Do The Asian Economies Compete With Japan In The Us Market, China Exceptional? A Triangular Trade Approach, Hiro Ito, Yushi Yoshida

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Political conflicts among trading partners have changed their forms with ever-increasing flows of foreign direct investment. A decrease in the exports of Japan might merely be a reflection of a global production shift by Japanese multinational corporations. We investigate the effect of Japanese trade on the exports of other countries to the United States in the 1990s. In our sample we include eight Asian countries besides the US and Japan. With the trade data disaggregated at the HS 4-digit level, we regress the exports of an Asian country to the US on the Japanese exports to the US and the …

Is Public Journalism Morphing Into The Public's Journalism?, Leonard Witt Oct 2004

Is Public Journalism Morphing Into The Public's Journalism?, Leonard Witt

Faculty Articles

The article reflects upon the conditions and developmental trends of public journalism in the United States as of 2004. Discussion is given noting ways in which the rise of public or civic journalism has effected the sector and are continuing to change due to the advent of blogs, multi-media communications and the Internet. Questions are raised regarding whether or not the public conception of journalism will remain as a specialized field or transition into a political activity done by the public at large.

Clinical Librarianship (Cl): A Historical Perspective, Evaliga Lappa Oct 2004

Clinical Librarianship (Cl): A Historical Perspective, Evaliga Lappa

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

A number of previous studies have collected data on a hospital’s use of databases and the librarian’s role in the process. These studies express common themes and suggest activities for librarians wishing to promote the use of new technologies.

The first theme: While it seems clear that some physicians are competent and satisfied users of new computer search systems, many more, unfortunately, are unaware of the potential time saving features and powerful search capabilities of their search systems. Health sciences librarians have been advocating the use of indexes and abstracts for as long as these products have been available. …

Language-Related Open Archives: Impact On Scholarly Communities And Academic Librarianship, Jung-Ran Park Oct 2004

Language-Related Open Archives: Impact On Scholarly Communities And Academic Librarianship, Jung-Ran Park

E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)

The evolution of new forms of scholarly communication since the advent of Web technology has brought unprecedented opportunities for potential global connection among the rapidly growing number of electronic repositories among scholarly communities. Under the open archive infrastructures, scholarly resources that had been invisible to Web search engines and thus afforded limited dissemination and access are now becoming increasingly visible with speedy and wide distribution. This paper addresses the emergent issues and challenges faced by academic librarians: participation in archiving, organization, and preservation of open repositories; integration of Web-based repositories into traditional collections; and mediation and direction of academic users …

Effect Of Therapist Color-Blindness On Empathy And Attributions In Cross-Cultural Counseling, Alan W. Burkard, Sarah Knox Oct 2004

Effect Of Therapist Color-Blindness On Empathy And Attributions In Cross-Cultural Counseling, Alan W. Burkard, Sarah Knox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Empathy and attributions of client responsibility for the cause of and solution to a problem were examined for 247 psychologists who were identified as having low, moderate, and high color-blind racial attitudes. Participants responded to 1 of 4 vignettes that controlled for client race (i.e., African American, European American) and client attributions regarding the cause (i.e., depression, discrimination) of a problem. Analyses revealed that the therapists’ level of color-blindness was directly related to their capacity for empathy and also to their attributions of responsibility for the solution to the problem with an African American client but not with a European …

Canto Al Huaso, Canto Al Pueblo: La Música Y El Discurso Político De La Identidad Chilena Durante Los Años Sesenta Y La Unidad Popular, Greg Walz-Chojnacki Oct 2004

Canto Al Huaso, Canto Al Pueblo: La Música Y El Discurso Político De La Identidad Chilena Durante Los Años Sesenta Y La Unidad Popular, Greg Walz-Chojnacki

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Just Behind The Mountain: Refugee Children Imagine Tibet, Emma Tobin Oct 2004

Just Behind The Mountain: Refugee Children Imagine Tibet, Emma Tobin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the Tibetan diaspora began in 1959, when His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet for India, many Tibetans have settled and started families in exile. Today, a large percentage of Tibetan refugees have been born in exile, and have therefore never seen their country. Within Tibetan exile communities, however, the importance of Tibetan identity is strongly emphasized and people are still very much invested in the plight of Tibet. As a result, there exist strong ideas about the reality of life in Tibet within the exile community. According Jamyang Norbu, “Though the Shangri-la stereotype is a Western creation, …
