Public Universities And Private Industry: A Case Study, Jeffrey S. Royer
Public Universities And Private Industry: A Case Study, Jeffrey S. Royer
Cornhusker Economics
A report recently released by an external review panel evaluates a controversial five-year contract between the University of California, Berkeley, and Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical and agrochemical company now known as Syngenta. The report, which was written by a team of consultants from Michigan State University and released in early August, addresses a number of issues related to the increasingly complex relationship between public universities and private industry. Given the size of the agreement and that it involved an entire academic department, the Berkeley-Novartis contract quickly became a focus for concerns relating to the basic mission of land-grant universities and …

Inspiring Imagination – Education And Learning: The University Experience In The Regional Development Cocktail, Robbie Collins, Laurie Stevenson
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This paper suggests that imagination ferments regional development. The paper considers how education, and in particular regional universities, are part of the regional development cocktail. Using contemporary and historical experience at the Shoalhaven Campus the paper explores how Shoalhaven campus can be seen as an integral ingredient in the Shoalhaven development cocktail. In doing so, it provides an analysis that matches other regional campus experiences. What is Shoalhaven Campus? An educational precinct based on a campus co-location model. In this instance, TAFE and University are co-located on the campus grounds and share library, IT, telephone and campus services facilities. The …

Moral Education In The Digital Age, Edward E. Tywoniak
Moral Education In The Digital Age, Edward E. Tywoniak
Special Topics, General
Our natural human inclination to seek a moral understanding of the world is one of the oldest cultural narratives handed down since the beginning of recorded history. Much has been written on the ontic nature of moral absolutes and the rhetorical discourse of what makes a good citizen, but neither metaphysics nor politics has been totally prepared for the instantly ubiquitous nature of digital technology and its effect on societies in the contemporary age of the networked world. This paper reflects both a philosophical inquiry into the nature of technical systems through a set of anecdotal observations on civic engagement, …
