Re-Shaping Documentary Expectations: New Journalism And Direct Cinema, Sharon Lynne Zuber Jan 2004

Re-Shaping Documentary Expectations: New Journalism And Direct Cinema, Sharon Lynne Zuber

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

New Journalism and Direct Cinema reflect a unique conjoined moment in the evolution of nonfiction writing and filmmaking in the United States. I argue that these movements developed as a specific response to the shift from a modern to a postmodern aesthetic, a shift away from faith in a coherent reality at a historical moment, the 1960s. In an attempt to capture reality using new methods that would raise the status of nonfiction, writers and filmmakers in these movements call attention to process and "style." at first glance, these experiments with new styles appear radical; instead, New Journalism and Direct …

The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993: Ten Years Of Experience: Introduction, Pauline Kim Jan 2004

The Family And Medical Leave Act Of 1993: Ten Years Of Experience: Introduction, Pauline Kim

Scholarship@WashULaw

On February 5, 1993, in a Rose Garden ceremony, President Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) into law, declaring that workers “will no longer need to choose between the job they need and the family they love.”1 The signing ceremony was significant for a number of reasons. It marked an early legislative victory for a new administration, signaling its commitment to ending gridlock in Washington. It also symbolized changing priorities: earlier versions of the legislation had twice been enacted by Congress and then vetoed by President George H.W. Bush. With its focus on the needs of …

The Role Of Dopamine In Motivational And Receptive Aspects Of Female Mouse Sexual Behavior, Amber Bradshaw Hodges Jan 2004

The Role Of Dopamine In Motivational And Receptive Aspects Of Female Mouse Sexual Behavior, Amber Bradshaw Hodges

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A pacing paradigm investigated the modulatory role of monoamines in the mesolimbic dopamine system on copulatory behavior in female mice. Specifically whether there is a distinction between the neural regulatory mechanisms of pacing behavior and receptive behavior was determined. Pacing measures motivational and rewarding components of copulation by the female's contacts and withdrawals from the male, while receptivity is the willingness to engage in copulations and is measured by the number of sexual stimulations received. A pacing paradigm was established and female mice were observed to pace in a similar manner, but at a lesser rate, than female rats.

Dopamine …

Dematerialization And Transmaterialization: What Have We Learned?, Walter C. Labys Jan 2004

Dematerialization And Transmaterialization: What Have We Learned?, Walter C. Labys

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Long-term materials demand patterns are important to examine because of the possibility of material obsolescence as well as the long lead times required to create new mineral productive capacity. Since structural changes in materials demand are inevitably linked to the performance and adjustments of national economies, materials life cycles have often been examined in the context of intensity of use (IOU). Explanations of these structural changes have focused on dematerialization; this concept implies a structural change in an economy embodying a reduced demand for materials and, therefore, a decline in overall industrial growth. An alternative view is that of transmaterialization, …

Non-Linear Input-Output Models: Practicability And Potential, Guy R. West, Randall Jackson Jan 2004

Non-Linear Input-Output Models: Practicability And Potential, Guy R. West, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The conventional input-output model has been widely criticised, both justly and unjustly, for its limiting assumptions. One of these assumptions is homogeneity of degree one. This paper explores some approaches to minimise this limitation of traditional input-output analysis by removing the assumption of linear coefficients for the intermediate and household sectors. As is well documented in the literature, the household sector is the dominant component of multiplier effects in an input-output model, so using marginal income and expenditure coefficients for the household sector provides a more accurate estimate of the multiplier effects. A price model can then utilised to estimate …

Effects Of Zoning On Residential Option Value, Jonathan C. Young Jan 2004

Effects Of Zoning On Residential Option Value, Jonathan C. Young

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Knowing more precisely how zoning affects housing value would allow policy-makers to improve long-term policy decisions. Previous studies have concluded that local zoning regulations affect residential option value. These studies, however, do not specify the magnitude of the effect for varying zoning types. This study quantifies zoning’s effect on residential option value for specific types of zoning using a hedonic regression model of housing prices. The study utilizes information on housing characteristics and sales prices for a cross-section of houses in Monongalia County, West Virginia. The research develops two models to differentiate between zoning effects on developed versus undeveloped properties. …

Ending Social Work's Grudge Match: Problems Versus Strengths, J. Curtis Mcmillen, Lisa A. Morris Phd, Michael Sherraden Jan 2004

Ending Social Work's Grudge Match: Problems Versus Strengths, J. Curtis Mcmillen, Lisa A. Morris Phd, Michael Sherraden

Faculty Publications

Some in social work have called for a paradigm shift away from a focus on problems to a focus on strengths, empowerment, and capacity building. This call sets up an unnatural dichotomy, asking social workers to identify with one side or another. In this article, we review social work history to argue that the best social work practice has always maintained a dual focus on both problems and capacity building. Throughout our history, those who championed a problem-oriented practice also emphasized strengths and growing client capacity, and today's strength-based, capacity-oriented practitioners typically advocate for the solving of consumer's presenting problems.
