The Evolving Role Of Information Literacy In Higher Education: A Case Study, Linda Poston
The Evolving Role Of Information Literacy In Higher Education: A Case Study, Linda Poston
The Christian Librarian
The desire of librarians at Nyack College, like other academic librarians, is to play a significant role in the development of effective research and critical thinking skills in the community we serve. But the challenges of having no room for a 1-credit required course in the core curriculum, cultivating faculty and student ownership of a campus-wide information literacy program, the integration of information literacy skills at the discipline, course and assignment levels, and development of appropriate assessment tools for measuring the effectiveness of the information literacy program seemed daunting.
When God Builds A House, Carol Reid
When God Builds A House, Carol Reid
The Christian Librarian
“Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it.”
Psalm 127:1 Let me paraphrase: “Except the Lord build the association, we are wasting our time.”
The Bible has many illustrations about building. Proverbs 14:1 says, “Every wise woman builds her house.” In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus talks about the wise man who builds his house on the rock. In Luke’s gospel, Jesus describes the man who builds the tower, but first sits down to decide how much it costs (14:28). The cornerstone is Peter’s construction metaphor in 1 Peter 2. Paul describes building materials in 1 Corinthians …
Public Legal Reason, Lawrence B. Solum
Public Legal Reason, Lawrence B. Solum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay develops an ideal of public legal reason--a normative theory of legal reasons that is appropriate for a society characterized by religious and moral pluralism. One of the implications of this theory is that normative theorizing about public and private law should eschew reliance on the deep premises of deontology or consequentialism and should instead rely on what the author calls public values--values that can be affirmed without relying on the deep and controversial premises of particular comprehensive moral doctrines.
The ideal of public legal reason is then applied to a particular question--whether welfarism (a particular form of normative …

Research-Informed Models For Communicating The Value Of Court-Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution For Public Funding, Kevin Dye
Massachusetts Office of Public Collaboration Publications
The purpose of framing the research in the following models is to assist the court and its court-connected mediation programs in their ongoing dialogue with the funding decision-makers in addressing the question: Is state funding of community mediation centers and court ADR generally a worthwhile investment? As a means of setting forth components of an analytic framework, the following simplified financial models are offered to draw out salient aspects of the nature of the investment. The simplified models are employed primarily for the purpose of illustrating the investment in terms of classic financial models familiar to a budget analyst. These …
The Theory Of The Firm, The Theory Of Competition And The Transnational Corporation, Janis Kapler
The Theory Of The Firm, The Theory Of Competition And The Transnational Corporation, Janis Kapler
Economics Faculty Publication Series
Coase’s 1937 paper on “The Nature of the Firm” formed the basis of the transaction-cost and internalization theories of transnational enterprises in the 1970s-1990s. These emphasized the problem of firms transferring intangible assets across national borders. Newer theories of the firm adopt resource-based Penrosian, knowledge-based, capabilities and evolutionary perspectives, yet most continue to explain the international firm as a function of transaction-cost economizing. It is argued that Coase’s intention was to present a theory of the firm abstracted from its competitive environment. The application of this approach to a theory of the TNC is flawed because it cannot explain the …

The Dynamics Of Income Diversification In Ethiopia: Evidence From Panel Data, Adugna Lemi
The Dynamics Of Income Diversification In Ethiopia: Evidence From Panel Data, Adugna Lemi
Economics Faculty Publication Series
Block and Webb (2001) in Food Policy address the issue of the dynamics of livelihood diversification in Ethiopia. Their study uses the ratio of per capita income derived from crops to the sum of all other incomes as an indicator of livelihood diversification for the years 1989 and 1994. Their study focuses only on drought-prone areas during the survey years. The aim of the present study is to explore further the demographic and economic determinants of the dynamics of income diversification using survey data. The data used in this study cover larger and more representative sample and was colleted from …
Fueled By Technology Market Demand, Massachusetts Economic Growth Increases, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Fueled By Technology Market Demand, Massachusetts Economic Growth Increases, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The pace of economic growth in Massachusetts has picked up significantly, beginning in the fourth quarter of last year, reflecting improved worldwide markets for information technology equipment in the last half of 2005. This resurgence in technology markets helped reverse a deceleration in state economic growth that the state experienced between mid-2004 and the third quarter of 2005. The Massachusetts economy has performed better over the last six months than at any time since the current expansion began in the second quarter of 2003. The recent pace of expansion matched the long-term average growth in real gross state product of …

Look For Little Growth In The First Half Of 2006, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The state’s economy remains stuck in slow gear, and may no longer even be moving forward. In the face of slow employment growth, a population and brain drain, a sharp spike in energy costs, volatile consumer confidence, housing prices that are clearly cooling, increasing federal budget deficits, trade deficits and rising interest rates, perhaps it’s good news that the economy has been able to grow at all.

A Mixed-Methods And Multi-Level Investigation Of The Effects Of A Crew Chief Intervention On Job Attitudes, Occupational Stress, And Organizational Commitment, Michael Charles Leo
Dissertations and Theses
High-profile instances of workplace violence and increased pressure from competitors have threatened the viability of one of the nation's largest employers, the United States Postal Service (USPS). As a result, the USPS began a massive change effort in the early 1990's. One of the initiatives implemented to improve labor-management relations was a derivative of the self-managed work team known as the crew chief program. This study provides a mixed-methods and multi-level approach to understand the impact this unique program had on organizational attitudes.
The first aim of this study was to investigate whether the crew chief program reduced employees' stress …

Anadromous salmon populations of the Pacific Northwest have been decreasing for decades in response to a variety of factors, such as habitat destruction, overharvesting, and declining water quality. In Washington State's Water Resource Inventory Area (WRIA) 1, the State Conservation Commission listed the habitat limiting factors for salmon and steelhead as: sedimentation problems associated with landslides, overharvesting, lack of large woody debris, warmer stream temperatures, and impacts to riparian, floodplain, water quality, and flow conditions. The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) addresses habitat limiting factors associated with agricultural land use. CREP projects involve the installation of forested riparian buffers along …
Beyond City And Suburb: Thinking Regionally, Richard Briffault
Beyond City And Suburb: Thinking Regionally, Richard Briffault
Faculty Scholarship
“City” and “suburb” as they were known and debated in the twentieth century are no more. Increasingly, the key urban unit in metropolitan America is the region. Robert Bruegmann’s Sprawl: A Compact History, a chronicle of the melding of city and suburban land use patterns, illustrates this development. Joel Kotkin’s The City: A Global History, which expresses concern about the loss of traditional urban distinctiveness, also reflects this. In her review of both books, Nicole Stelle Garnett appropriately raises issues of interlocal competition and equity, and the quality of urban life in metropolitan America, but she errs in framing them …

Plagiarism is an ethical breach involving the misuse of others' intellectual property. Instances of alleged plagiarism have discredited various Christian ministers and authors. Various style manuals provide guidelines for acknowledging direct quotation, paraphrasing, and other uses of sources. Preachers and teachers should adapt those guidelines to the context of verbal communication.

Coping Processes Of Couples Experiencing Infertility, Brennan Peterson, Christopher R. Newton, Karen H. Rosen, Robert S. Shulman
Coping Processes Of Couples Experiencing Infertility, Brennan Peterson, Christopher R. Newton, Karen H. Rosen, Robert S. Shulman
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
This study explored the coping processes of couples experiencing infertility. Participants included 420 couples referred for advanced reproductive treatments. Couples were divided into groups based on the frequency of their use of eight coping strategies. Findings suggest that coping processes, which are beneficial to individuals, may be problematic for one's partner. Couples where men used high amounts of distancing, while their partner used low amounts of distancing, reported higher levels of distress when compared to couples in the other groups. Conversely, couples with women who used high amounts of self-controlling coping, when paired with men who used low amounts of …

This article traces the evolution of the housing finance system in the U.S., with particular attention to changes from the 1960s through the early 2000s. The paper shows the trends to increasing risk taking by lenders and households, predicting the collapse of the mortgage system in the mid 2000s.
Social Ownership, Michael E. Stone
Social Ownership, Michael E. Stone
Community Studies Faculty Publication Series
The chapter begins with an overview of the social dimensions of all housing. This is followed by a definition of the more particular concept of social ownership and explanation of how the housing tenure available to residents of socially owned housing differs from both conventional renting and conventional homeownership. The bulk of the chapter then examines the nature and scope of existing models of social ownership, grouped into two major categories: socially owned rental housing, consisting of public housing, nonprofit rental housing, and mutual housing associations; and nonspeculative homeownership, consisting of limited-equity cooperatives, ownership with community land trusts, and some …
Natural Justice, Lawrence B. Solum
Natural Justice, Lawrence B. Solum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Justice is a natural virtue. Well-functioning humans are just, as are well-ordered human societies. Roughly, this means that in a well-ordered society, just humans internalize the laws and social norms (the nomoi)--they internalize lawfulness as a disposition that guides the way they relate to other humans. In societies that are mostly well-ordered, with isolated zones of substantial dysfunction, the nomoi are limited to those norms that are not clearly inconsistent with the function of law--to create the conditions for human flourishing. In a radically dysfunctional society, humans are thrown back on their own resources--doing the best they can in …
