High-Stakes Testing: Can Rapid Assessment Reduce The Pressure?, Stuart S. Yeh Dec 2005

High-Stakes Testing: Can Rapid Assessment Reduce The Pressure?, Stuart S. Yeh

Stuart S Yeh

This article presents findings about the implementation of a system for rapidly assessing student progress in math and reading in grades K–12—a system that potentially could reduce pressure on teachers resulting from high-stakes testing and the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act. Interviews with 49 teachers and administrators in one Texas school district suggest that the assessments allowed teachers to individualize and target instruction; provide more tutoring; reduce drill and practice; and improve student readiness for, and spend more time on, critical thinking activities, resulting in a more balanced curriculum. Teachers reported that the assessments provided a common …

La Sociología Aplicada, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas Dec 2005

La Sociología Aplicada, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

The Hidden Potential Of Macroeconomics In Mba Programs For Ceo Decision Making, Peter Navarro Dec 2005

The Hidden Potential Of Macroeconomics In Mba Programs For Ceo Decision Making, Peter Navarro

PETER NAVARRO

Macroeconomics is a subject that has profound strategic and tactical implications for CEO decision making -- yet many top- ranked business schools do not offer this subject in it's appropriately integrative and applied management context. This essay illustrates how the cultivation of "macroeconomic literacy" in the MBA classroom using four innovative instructional strategies can improve CEO decision making across all functional areas of the firm while helping to meet important AACSB learning goals, including curriculum integration, application of interactive teaching strategies, soft skills enhancement, and promoting a global perspective.

Effects Of Two Versions Of An Empathy-Based Rape Prevention Program On Fraternity Men’S Rape Survivor Empathy, Rape Myth Acceptance, Likelihood Of Raping, And Likelihood Of Committing Sexual Assault., John D. Foubert, J. T. Newberry

John D. Foubert

Fraternity men (N = 261) at a small to midsized public university saw one of two versions of a rape prevention program or were in a control group. Program participants reported significant increases in empathy toward rape survivors and significant declines in rape myth acceptance, likelihood of raping, and likelihood of committing sexual assault. Program participants’ scores significantly differed from an untreated control group in several areas. Implications for describing a male-on-male rape to increase men’s empathy toward female survivors and other related attitudes are discussed.

Student Assistant Training In A Small Academic Library, Ruth S. Connell, Trisha Mileham

Ruth S. Connell

At Valparaiso University's main library, the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources (formerly the Moellering Library), student employees are an integral part of day-to-day operations. Students work at the reference desk and must be able to handle reference questions. Since the fall 2000 semester, the Reference Services Librarian has been creating a training program for the student assistants, consisting of an initial training period and a series of quizzes combined with review sessions. Student assistants are also indispensable in Instruction Services. These students are charged with library web site and instruction materials' updates. Methods, lessons learned throughout the process, …

Policy Challenges From The "White" Senate Inquiry Into Workplace-Related Health Impacts Of Toxic Dusts And Nanoparticles, Thomas A. Faunce, Haydn Walters, Trevor Williams, David Bryant, Martin Jennings, Bill Musk

Thomas A Faunce

On 22 June 2005 the Senate of the Commonwealth of Australia voted to establish an inquiry into workplace harm related to toxic dust and emerging technologies (including nanoparticles). The inquiry became known as the "White" Inquiry after Mr Richard White, a financially uncompensated sufferer of industrial sandblasting-induced lung disease who was instrumental in its establishment. The "White" Inquiry delivered its final report and recommendations on 31 May 2006. This paper examines whether these recommendations and their implementation may provide a unique opportunity not only to modernize relevant monitoring standards and processes, but related compensation systems for disease associated with workplace-related …

Superfund, Hedonics, And The Scales Of Environmental Justice, Douglas S. Noonan, Brett M. Baden, Rama Mohana Turaga Dec 2005

Superfund, Hedonics, And The Scales Of Environmental Justice, Douglas S. Noonan, Brett M. Baden, Rama Mohana Turaga

Douglas S. Noonan

The environmental justice (EJ) movement now occupies a prominent position in environmental policy. EJ is a core principle for thousands of grassroots environmental organizations, is the subject of a Presidential executive order and an office in the EPA, and recently served to frame how the nation viewed the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This paper contributes to the research on environmental equity by (a) improving on traditional environmental justice research by incorporating results from economic analyses, and (b) presenting new evidence on the distributional equity of Superfund site locations at multiple scales. Choosing the correct spatial scale for analysis continues …

The Populist Chameleon: The People's Party, Huey Long, George Wallace, And The Populist Argumentative Frame, Michael J. Lee Dec 2005

The Populist Chameleon: The People's Party, Huey Long, George Wallace, And The Populist Argumentative Frame, Michael J. Lee

Michael J Lee

This essay argues that a sustained form can be located in the complicated history of populist rhetoric. Despite its chameleonic qualities, the advancement of populism is constituted by alterations in the focus and content, not the structure, of populist activism. This structure, or what I term its argumentative frame, positions a virtuous people against a powerful enemy and expresses disdain toward traditional forms of democratic deliberation and republican representation. I trace these themes through the rhetoric of the People's Party, Huey Long, and George Wallace. I conclude by analyzing the link between populism's persistence in U.S. history and the nation's …

Investigation Of Predatory Practices In The Brazilian Beer Markets, Lucia H. Salgado, Alessandro V. Oliveira, Natalia S. Ferreira Dec 2005

Investigation Of Predatory Practices In The Brazilian Beer Markets, Lucia H. Salgado, Alessandro V. Oliveira, Natalia S. Ferreira

Lucia Helena Salgado

This paper aims at making inference regarding the competitive conduct of beer manufacturers in Brazil and at investigating alleged predatory behavior in the market from data disaggregated at the brand level. By making use of the theoretical framework on predation and of the New Empirical Industrial Organization methodology, we propose a structural model of conduct, based on a game of Bertrand competition with product differentiation, in order to better represent rivalry among players in this important market. Final results revealed that it is not possible to reject the hypothesis that the dominant firm presented over-competitive conduct for some of its …

Los Jóvenes Y La Creación De Empresas, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas Dec 2005

Los Jóvenes Y La Creación De Empresas, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Residential Colleges, Paul J. Rich Dec 2005

Residential Colleges, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

Starting as an undergraduate in one of Harvard's residential colleges, Dunster House, and reinforced by being a life governor of an Oxford college (Harris Manchester) as well as a sometime resident in Mitchell Hall of Makerere University in Uganda and St. George's College in the University of Western Australia, I have long been an advocate of the residential college as an important part of tertiary education. While this is a somewhat pidgin translation, it commemorates an association with one such college in Mexico.

Walter Beach, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

A variation of these remarks was part of the memorial service I led for Walter at the Southern Political Science and American Political Science Associations after his death, and was published in the Policy Studies Journal and Review of Policy Research. He was my predecessor as President of the Policy Studies Organization and he also was a friend and mentor. We miss him dearly but fortunately he lived long enough to see the PSO move to Washington, only a couple blocks from his office.
