Did Katrina Recalibrate Attitudes Toward Poverty And Inequality? A Test Of The “Dirty Little Secret” Hypothesis, David Grusky, Emily Ryo
Did Katrina Recalibrate Attitudes Toward Poverty And Inequality? A Test Of The “Dirty Little Secret” Hypothesis, David Grusky, Emily Ryo
Emily Ryo
We test the popular claim that poverty and inequality were “dirty little secrets” until the media coverage of Hurricane Katrina exposed them to a wider public. If this account were on the mark, it would suggest that the absence of major antipoverty initiatives in the United States is partly attributable to public ignorance and apathy coupled with the narrowly rational decision on the part of policymakers to attend to other issues about which the public evidently cares more. Using the 2004 Maxwell Poll, we find strikingly high levels of awareness and activism on poverty and inequality issues even prior to …

Juvenile justice systems that release offenders without court-ordered supervision are not addressing the needs of parents as guardians over young law breakers. Help for parents needs to come from the professional community, the neighborhood, the school system, and the juvenile justice system. Hence, this paper proposes that a group of volunteers from these entities be assembled into a pilot program with the goal of reducing juvenile recidivism, relapse, and reincarceration. This program will aim to guide juvenile offenders into successful reintegration into the community and prevent reincarceration/relapse of youths released from juvenile corrections facilities with no court-ordered supervision. A developmental …

Beyond Affect And Cognition: Identification Of The Informational Bases Of Food Attitudes, Shelley N. Aikman, Stephen L. Crites, Leandre R. Fabrigar
Stephen L Crites Jr.
Two studies were conducted to identify the informational bases of food attitudes. Study I was an exploratory study in which participants indicated the importance of food characteristics and emotional reactions for determining their attitudes toward a variety of foods. On the basis of a series of exploratory factor analyses, 5 informational bases of food attitudes were identified: positive affect, negative affect, specific sensory qualities, abstract cognitive qualities, and general sensory qualities. A second confirmatory study corroborated the appropriateness of this 5-factor structure. Furthermore, the food-specific attitude structure model was found to have better fit than a more traditional attitude structure …

Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Acute Aerobic Exercise Effects On Neuroelectric And Behavioral Measures Of Action Monitoring, Jason R. Themanson, Charles H. Hillman
Jason R. Themanson, Ph.D
Cardiorespiratory fitness and acute aerobic exercise effects on cognitive function were assessed for 28 higher- and lower-fit adults during a flanker task by comparing behavioral and neuroelectric indices of action monitoring. The error-related negativity, error positivity, and N2 components, as well as behavioral measures of response speed, accuracy, and post-error slowing were measured following a 30-minute acute bout of treadmill exercise or following 30-minutes of rest. A graded maximal exercise test was used to measure cardiorespiratory fitness by assessing maximal oxygen uptake. Results indicated that higher-fit adults exhibited reduced error-related negativity amplitude, increased error positivity amplitude, and increased post-error response …

In Andean archaeology, it is stylistic evidence that form the basis for many investigations of long-distance relationships
and evidence of regional interaction. From hunter-gatherer projectile point type distributions to evidence of expansive
states like Wari and Tiwanaku, the basis of much of the inference regarding prehistory in the Andes is stylistic
relationships in workmanship, architecture, or iconography. In the past fifty years chemical characterization studies have
permitted a second basic form of regional evidence to emerge: provenancing studies.
Provenancing studies complement stylistic evidence because chemical provenance provides unqualified evidence of
contact between two regions. With provenancing studies: We know that …

Il Calcio Tra Mercato, Relazioni E Coercizione, Raul Caruso
Raul Caruso

Sovereignty And The American Courts At The Cocktail Party Of International Law: The Dangers Of Domestic Invocations Of Foreign And International Law, Donald J. Kochan
Donald J. Kochan
With increasing frequency and heightened debate, United States courts have been citing foreign and “international” law as authority for domestic decisions. This trend is inappropriate, undemocratic, and dangerous. The trend touches on fundamental concepts of sovereignty, democracy, the judicial role, and overall issues of effective governance. There are multiple problems with the judiciary’s reliance on extraterritorial and extra-constitutional foreign or international sources to guide their decisions. Perhaps the most fundamental flaw is its interference with rule of law values. To borrow from Judge Harold Levanthal, the use of international sources in judicial decision-making might be described as “the equivalent of …

The Blogosphere And The New Pamphleteers, Donald J. Kochan
Donald J. Kochan
The future of the free dissemination of information lies in the blog, some may say. The internet has entirely transformed how we receive and consume information. It’s the newest incarnation of information dissemination. From the insights of Alexis de Tocqueville, “Feelings and opinions are recruited, the heart is enlarged, and the human mind is developed only by the reciprocal influence of men upon one another.” Bloggers are a powerful force in the distribution of information and ideas and the creation of communities of conversation. Throughout history, the dissemination of information, news, opinions, and ideas has continuously transformed. In the 18th …

The precautionary principle enables rapid response in the face of a possible danger to human, animal or plant health, or to protect the environment. In particular, where scientific data do not permit a complete evaluation of the risk, recourse to this principle may, for example, be used to stop distribution or order withdrawal from the market of products likely to be hazardous.
El principio de precaución permite reaccionar rápidamente ante un posible peligro para la salud humana, animal o vegetal, o para proteger el medio ambiente. De hecho, en caso de que los datos científicos no permitan una determinación completa …

Illegal Landings: An Aggregate Catch Self-Reporting Mechanism, Lars Gårn Hansen, Frank Jensen, Niels Vestergaard, Urs Steiner Brandt
Niels Vestergaard
To solve the problem of illegal landings this article proposes a new tax mechanism based on the regulator's own aggregate catch estimates and ex ante self-reports of planned catch by fishermen. We show that the mechanism avoids illegal landings while ensuring (nearly) optimal exploitation and generating (nearly) correct entry and exit incentives. Finally we simulate the mechanism for the Danish cod fishery in Kattegat to obtain a rough indicator of the size of the tax. It turns out that the average tax payment as a percentage of profit is surprisingly low.
