Drinking Game Participation Among College Students: Gender And Ethnic Implications, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie Nov 2006

Drinking Game Participation Among College Students: Gender And Ethnic Implications, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

Participation in drinking games by college students has recently sparked research attention. While previous research indicates that women play drinking games at lower frequencies than men, the current study reveals that college women may be playing games at rates similar to college men. In a sample of 105 coed college students, participants completed a 3-month Timeline Followback recording every drinking event and quantity consumed. They then were prompted to identify which drinking events involved drinking games and how much alcohol was consumed during game playing. Both men and women engaged in drinking games at similar rates and consumed more drinks …

Reducing The Global Burden Of Tuberculosis: The Contribution Of Improved Diagnostics, Emmett Keeler, Mark Perkins, Peter Small, Christy Hanson, Steven Reed, Jane Cunningham, Julia Aledort, Lee Hillborne, Maria Rafael, Federico Girosi, Christopher Dye Oct 2006

Reducing The Global Burden Of Tuberculosis: The Contribution Of Improved Diagnostics, Emmett Keeler, Mark Perkins, Peter Small, Christy Hanson, Steven Reed, Jane Cunningham, Julia Aledort, Lee Hillborne, Maria Rafael, Federico Girosi, Christopher Dye

Emmett Keeler

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of disease and death, with ~2 billion people infected and ~2 million deaths annually. Sputum smear microscopy (SSM) has remained the cornerstone of TB diagnosis for more than a century and is a pillar of the global strategy to control the disease, although it has significant limitations. As the epidemic continues, more attention is being paid to the impact that improving existing diagnostic methods and introducing new procedures might have in resource-limited settings. We estimated the potential global impact of better diagnostic tests, to provide guidance for health-care workers, test developers, funding agencies and …

Popularity, Social Acceptance, And Aggression In Adolescent Peer Groups: Links With Academic Performance And School Attendance, David Schwartz, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Tara Mckay Oct 2006

Popularity, Social Acceptance, And Aggression In Adolescent Peer Groups: Links With Academic Performance And School Attendance, David Schwartz, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Tara Mckay

Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman

This article reports a short-term longitudinal study focusing on popularity and social acceptance as predictors of academic engagement for a sample of 342 adolescents (approximate average age of 14). These youths were followed for 4 consecutive semesters. Popularity, social acceptance, and aggression were assessed with a peer nomination inventory, and data on academic engagement were obtained from school records. For adolescents who were highly aggressive, increases in popularity were associated with increases in unexplained absences and decreases in grade point average. Conversely, changes in social acceptance were not predictive of changes in grade point average or unexplained absences. These results …

Jus Post Bellum: Just War Theory And The Principles Of Just Peace, Robert Williams, Dan Caldwell Oct 2006

Jus Post Bellum: Just War Theory And The Principles Of Just Peace, Robert Williams, Dan Caldwell

Robert E. Williams Jr.

What happens following a war is important to the moral judgments we make concerning warfare, just as the intentions going in and the means used are. There has, however, been inadequate attention paid to considerations of jus post bellum in the just war tradition. This essay seeks to contribute to recent efforts to develop jus post bellum principles by first noting some of the ways that jus ad bellum and jus in bello considerations serve to constrain what can legitimately be done after war. We argue, however, that the constraints grounded in traditional just war theory do not offer sufficient …

Economic Well-Being At Older Ages: Income- And Consumption-Based Poverty Measures In The Hrs, Michael Hurd, Susann Rohwedder Oct 2006

Economic Well-Being At Older Ages: Income- And Consumption-Based Poverty Measures In The Hrs, Michael Hurd, Susann Rohwedder

Susann Rohwedder

According to economic theory, well-being or utility depends on consumption. However, at the household level, total consumption is rarely measured because its collection requires a great deal of survey time. As a result income has been widely used to assess economic well-being and poverty rates. Yet, because households can use wealth to consume more than income, an income-based measure of well-being could yield misleading results for many households, especially at older ages. We use data from the Health and Retirement Study to find income-based poverty rates which we compare with poverty rates as measured in the Current Population Survey. We …

Photographic Observations On The Disorganization Of Rural Communities, Kenneth Tunnell Oct 2006

Photographic Observations On The Disorganization Of Rural Communities, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

Across the globe, rural communities and small towns are undergoing fundamental and at times rapid change. Within some rural areas of the US, the decline of the family farm and the housing development of the country side race along. In addition, the Wal-Marting of rural America and the demise of locally owned businesses alter the small town landscape. Once-quaint hamlets are becoming vastly different places than of only a generation ago. This photo essay, focusing especially on the central Appalachian region of the US, visually describes these vast changes effecting rural communities and small towns. Photographs of defunct independent businesses …

The Re-Emergence Of Traditional Architecture In Greece: Kefalonia And Ithaka, Nicholas Patricios Oct 2006

The Re-Emergence Of Traditional Architecture In Greece: Kefalonia And Ithaka, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

The interest in antiquities in Greece began after the conclusion of the revolution that led to independence of the country in 1832. A brief history of the legislation to protect the country’s architectural heritage is traced up to the historic landmark law of 2002 that defined the concept of cultural heritage and the re-organization of government departments to achieve the law’s objectives. Beginning in the 1920s and parallel with the protection of antiquities a movement to preserve Greek vernacular architecture was undertaken that was recognized in the landmark law of 1978. The application of the laws of protection and preservation …

Path Of The Bridger: Ahp's Role In Co-Creating A "New Reality" For Human Togetherness And The Evolution Of Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

As the newly elected President of AHP, I feel very honored to become part of an ongoing, transformational, creative, and inspiring history. As I mentioned in my recent introductory letter to you all after being voted AHP’s new President this summer, since its founding the Association for Humanistic Psychology (AHP) has been engaged in an historic, “transformational undertaking”—to actualize “a bold new affirmative approach in psychology and life” and “to explore the edges of what is known, looking for new and workable methods to facilitate our evolution as individuals and as a society.” Humanistic Psychology and AHP represented a shift …

On Homo-Diplomacy, Costas M. Constantinou

Costas M. Constantinou

This article explores alternative cultures of diplomacy that have been neglected in diplomatic studies
and global politics. It is concerned firstly with the human dimension of diplomacy, that is to say,
the interpersonal dealings of the homo sapiens, or the experimental and experiential diplomacy of
everyday life. It is concerned secondly with the spiritual and transformative potential of diplomacy,
a form of diplomacy that engages in heterology to revisit and rearticulate homology, whose mission
is not only, not just, the knowledge and control of the Other but fundamentally the knowledge of
the Self and this knowledge of the Self as …

Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson Oct 2006

Recall And Recognition Of Brand-Modified Product Placement In Movies, Caitlin Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the product placement industry has seen a significant boom. The growth of product placement continues as media seeks funding and branded products vie for increased audience attention. Because of the increased product placement, there are many studies that examine the attitudes towards product placement, the experiences and interpretations of brands post-product placement, the effects of product placement, and memory of product placement. However, while product placement is a popular trend, there are occasions when branded products are altered in movies and television (this thesis refers to the altered products as “brand-modified products”). Little, if any, research has …

Social Security And The Stock Market: How The Pursuit Of Market Magic Shapes The System, Alicia Haydock Munnell, Steven A. Sass Oct 2006

Social Security And The Stock Market: How The Pursuit Of Market Magic Shapes The System, Alicia Haydock Munnell, Steven A. Sass

Upjohn Press

Munnell and Sass explore whether equities could help solve the woes facing the U.S. retirement income system in general, and the Social Security shortfall in particular. They examine the experiences of three nations that added equities to the investment mix of their retirement systems—the U.K., Australia, and Canada. As these experiences show, while equities promise higher returns than government bonds, how they are implemented—as add-ons, carve-outs, or as trust fund supplements—matters greatly.
