Newspaper/Television Cross-Ownership And Local News And Public Affairs Programming On Television Stations: An Empirical Analysis, Michael Z. Yan
Newspaper/Television Cross-Ownership And Local News And Public Affairs Programming On Television Stations: An Empirical Analysis, Michael Z. Yan
McGannon Center Working Paper Series
This study analyzes the relationship between local newspaper/television cross-ownership and the presence and quantity of local news and local public affairs programming on broadcast television. The analyses, based on a two-week constructed random sample of television programming in 2003 for 226 randomly selected, plus 27 cross-owned television stations, show that cross-owned stations did not broadcast more local news than non-cross owned stations that also provided local news. In addition, cross-ownership had no significant relationship with either the presence or the quantity of local public affairs programming on commercial television.

Leader-Member Exchange In Scripture: Insights From Jesus, Noah, And Abraham, Jennifer Dose
Leader-Member Exchange In Scripture: Insights From Jesus, Noah, And Abraham, Jennifer Dose
Business Educator Scholarship
Although much has been written about leadership from a Christian perspective, Christian principles have greater potential to be integrated into the academic research literature than has yet been realized. Leadership theory and practice is one area in which Scripture can contribute significantly, leader-member exchange theory (LMX) being one example. LMX states that leaders have limited personal, social, and organizational resources (e.g., time, energy, personal power); thus, rather than interacting similarly with each follower, leaders have different relationships with different followers. Some followers receive a higher degree of social exchange including increased levels of information sharing, interaction time, mutual support, and …

Putting Humans First?, David Graham, Nathan Nobis
Putting Humans First?, David Graham, Nathan Nobis
Attitudes Towards Animals Collection
In Putting Humans First: Why We Are Nature's Favorite, Tibor Machan argues against moral perspectives that require taking animals' interests seriously. He attempts to defend the status quo regarding routine, harmful uses of animals for food, fashion and experimentation. Graham and Nobis argue that Machan's work fails to resist pro-animal moral conclusions that are supported by a wide range of contemporary ethical arguments.

The Balkan Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Dylan Kissane
The Balkan Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Dylan Kissane
Dylan Kissane
In physics, biology and meteorology, scientists have come to understand that the natural systems they study can be extremely sensitive to small events. The so-called ‘butterfly effect’ is testament to such seemingly insignificant events having significant implications for the wider system. Such knowledge has led to an interest in the natural sciences in both chaotic and complex systems and, in turn, has led to social scientists searching for parallels in the systems they examine. However, within the field of international relations theory, there has been little attempt to move towards such new understandings and away from a fundamental belief in …

Adding Ecological Considerations To Environmental Accounting, David A. Bainbridge
Adding Ecological Considerations To Environmental Accounting, David A. Bainbridge
David A Bainbridge
Environmental accounting has often neglected ecological costs. These are essential to complete a true cost accounting. Ecological costs are often very large and long term and if they are ignored the costs/benefits of projects are incorrectly calculated.

Empowering Web Experiences With Ajax And Rss Feed, Win Shih, Hongbin Liu
Win Shih
The rapid evolution of Web technologies and standards has fueled the development of a raft of highly interactive and personalizable Web applications. AJAX (Asynchronous javaScript and XML)-powered and RSS-enabled Web sites, such as Google/IG, Google Map, Start.com from Microsoft, and Flickr.com from Yahoo make Web interfaces out of normally-nonweb-eanbled functionalities as running typical applications on your local PC.
Using similar technologies, we have been exploring the possibilities to a library-based portal that allows users freely configure their customized portal with contents of their choosing. Be this content e-mail, news, weather, blogging, photos, library’s catalog, or any RSS feed from publishers, …
Las Políticas De Planeación De Usos Del Suelo Y La Conservación Integrada De Las Zonas De Monumentos Históricos (Zmhs) / Land Use Policies And The Integrated Conservation Of The Historical Monuments Zones, Yanet Lezama-López
Land Reallocation In Vietnam’S Agrarian Transition, Martin Ravallion, Dominique Van De Walle
Land Reallocation In Vietnam’S Agrarian Transition, Martin Ravallion, Dominique Van De Walle
Martin Ravallion
Liberalizing key factor markets is a crucial step in the transition from a socialist control-economy to a market economy. However, the process can be stalled by imperfect information, high transaction costs and covert resistance from entrenched interests. The paper studies agricultural land reallocation in the wake of Vietnam’s efforts to establish a free market in land-use rights following de-collectivization. Inefficiencies in the initial administrative allocation are measured against an explicit counterfactual. Land allocation responded positively but slowly to the initial inefficiencies. There is no sign that the transition favored the land rich or that it was thwarted by local officials.

The Discretion Of Judges And Corporate Executives: An Insider’S View Of The Disney Case, John J. Donohue
The Discretion Of Judges And Corporate Executives: An Insider’S View Of The Disney Case, John J. Donohue
John Donohue
The widely publicized Disney case is perhaps the most important corporate law litigation in many decades. The case illustrates the immense discretion in the hands of trial judges in Delaware Chancery Court to let their passive corporate law ideology determine the outcome even in cases of egregious management neglect. Unfortunately, as managers, not shareholders, are the ones who decide where to incorporate and Delaware—the state of choice—depends on incorporation revenues to feed its coffers, too often this discretion is exercised to protect management at shareholder expense.
The Best Puffery Article Ever, David A. Hoffman
The Best Puffery Article Ever, David A. Hoffman
David A Hoffman
This Article provides the first extensive legal treatment of an important defense in the law of fraud and contracts: puffery. Legal authorities commonly say they make decisions about whether defendants should be able to utter exaggerated, optimistic, lies based on assumptions about buyer behavior, concluding that consumers do not rely on such speech. However, as the Article shows, such analyses are proxies for a deeper analytical question: does the speech encourage or discourage a type of consumption activity that the court deems welfare maximizing? The Article presents a novel constitutional analysis of puffery doctrine that focuses on the meaning of …

The Role Of Incentive Design In Parliamentarian Anti-Corruption Programmes, Bryane Michael
Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)
What incentive do parliamentarians have to implement anti-corruption recommendations made by organisations such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union? This paper discusses how national anti-corruption programmes can be designed to be politically palatable to MPs.
Discouraged Workers? Job Search Outcomes Of Older Workers, Nicole Maestas, Xiaoyan Li
Discouraged Workers? Job Search Outcomes Of Older Workers, Nicole Maestas, Xiaoyan Li
Nicole Maestas
Many have suggested we adopt policies that explicitly encourage the elderly to work. Behind this suggestion is the assumption that if an older person desires a job, one will be found; however, little is known about the extent to which this is true, and in the Health and Retirement Study, many more respondents say they expect to work after retirement than actually undertake work. This raises an important question: To what extent can the elderly readily find suitable jobs? In the context of a theoretical job search model, we examine the decision to search for a job and the probability …
The Value Of Csa Deep Indexing For Researchers (Executive Summary), Carol Tenopir, Robert Sandusky, Margaret Casado
The Value Of Csa Deep Indexing For Researchers (Executive Summary), Carol Tenopir, Robert Sandusky, Margaret Casado
Carol Tenopir
In 2005-2006 CSA developed a new “deep indexing” method to extract tables and figures from journal articles, index each table and figure, provide a retrieval method to locate tables and figures or complete articles that contain relevant figures or tables, and link them back to the article. A prototype Tables & Figures index of approximately 300,000 objects was made available for testing on the CSA Illumina Web-based platform in April 2006. The Tables & Figure index prototype was particularly strong in its coverage of biological, environmental, and aquatic sciences.
