Book Review: Learning To Write "Indian": The Boarding-School Experience And American Indian Literature, Bruce E. Johansen Oct 2006

Book Review: Learning To Write "Indian": The Boarding-School Experience And American Indian Literature, Bruce E. Johansen

Communication Faculty Publications

In a twist on assimilation, many boarding school students used the English language, a primary tool of colonization, to "talk back" to the system. As surely as the boarding-schools' inventors understood that language is the vessel of culture, none of them gave much thought to the ways in which Native Americans would use English to critique the schools into which many of them had been unwillingly enrolled.

Their writings, examined by Amelia Katanski, indicate that the boarding-school students were unwilling to surrender as victims. Learning English describes how Native American students in boarding schools often forged new identities, taking a …

Baby Boomers’ Attitudes Towards Product Placements, Nichole M. Schmoll, John Hafer, Michael L. Hilt, Hugh J. Reilly

Communication Faculty Publications

Including branded products within mass media programming is becoming common. Previous research has focused almost entirely on college-age students' attitudes about placements in movies and television. This research focuses on Baby Boomers and is the first to include questions about multiple media in forming attitudes towards product placements. Six hypotheses were tested. Attitude toward product placement is related to media consumption. Males appear more positive than females. Interactions effects of media consumption x gender and media consumption x age appear insignificant. Analytical results, graphs, tables and managerial implications and representative comments from respondents are presented.

Encouraging The Returner: Maximizing Benefits From Training Investments In High Turnover Industry, Karl R. Geisler

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

No matter what they make, do, or sell, every single organization in the world relies ultimately on one thing: people. Whether working for a company, a campaign, or a cooperative, the quality of the people involved has a direct impact on the success achieved therein. In an attempt to make the most of the workers that they have nearly every organization across the globe undertakes some level of training. Whether demonstrating how to use a hammer or holding a week-long retreat on corporate culture and structure, it is difficult to find an organization that does not have some form of …

Misspent Youth: An Analysis Of The Youth Vote In America, Stacy Pederson

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

In 1971 the voting franchise in America was extended to cover all citizens aged eighteen and older. Politicians often cite young people as being the future of the nation and an example of what the promise of America has to offer the next generation. Rep. Richard Gephardt once declared that, “The most important thing we have to do is invest in the mental capacity of young people.”^ However, the stigma surrounding the notion that youth cannot be counted on to cast their votes on Election Day has created an uneasy disconnect between elected officials and the youngest sector of the …

Life As An Intern: Working At The Juvenile Public Defenders Office, Kelly Szymborski

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

When I was freshman at Westem I joined the Honors Program for the challenge. I wanted to do something that would help me get the most of out my college experience by pushing me to succeed beyond all my expectations. Today, I feel that I have met that goal through my final project. It has come to symbolize everything I have learned at Western, and everything I hope to become in my future. For my final project I was an investigative intern with the Whatcom County Public Defenders Office. I dedicated over 250 hours of work into reading cases, talking …

Book Review Of In The Company Of Crows And Ravens By John M. Marzluff And Tony Angell, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 2006

Book Review Of In The Company Of Crows And Ravens By John M. Marzluff And Tony Angell, Paul A. Johnsgard

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

This is an aptly titled book that deals in a fascinating manner with the biological and cultural intersections that have occurred between humans and the crow-like birds (Corvus spp.) throughout history. Today, even city dwellers are likely to have had some contacts with crows, as these crafty birds have increasingly been able to adapt to the complex world of city life in recent decades. As a youngster I knew crows only as highly elusive countryside birds, and I was constantly frustrated in my attempts to stalk them with my .22 rifle and collect a 25-cent bounty. Later, while doing …

Transportation Financing Opportunities For The State Of California, Mti Report 06-01, Asha Weinstein Agrawal Oct 2006

Transportation Financing Opportunities For The State Of California, Mti Report 06-01, Asha Weinstein Agrawal

Mineta Transportation Institute

Significant investments will be required to maintain, operate, upgrade, and expand California's transportation infrastructure if the state is to retain its economic position in the global economy and accommodate a projected near doubling of the current population by 2040. At the same time, available funding for transportation will decline significantly over the next 15 years if the current transportation finance system remains unchanged. This report analyzes a range of alternative sources of revenue, as well as different finance options. The research is based upon reviews of existing literature, interviews with key stakeholders, and two statewide phone surveys. The facility-based sources …

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish: The Economic And Environmental Impacts Of Commercial Fishing, Jessica Glenn

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Fish and fisheries play an important role in the Amazon River Basin. Fishing provides jobs to people of both urban and rural communities, and fish are a major source of protein in people’s diets and a major part of the Amazon River ecosystem. In recent years commercial fishing has increased due to greater access to both domestic and international markets, and government incentives which have helped fishermen obtain better equipment and boats. The purpose of this study is to observe the Belém Ver-O-Peso fish market and interview fisherman about different aspects of commercial fishing (what species of fish were caught, …

“Ahora Tenemos Una Voz”: Transformaciones En La Vida Cotidiana De Mujeres Piqueteras En La Provincia De Buenos Aires = We Now Have A Voice”: Transformations In The Daily Life Of Piquetero Women In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Claudia L. Romeu Mejía

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The piquetero movement was born in the late nineties among many transformations in the Argentine economic system. It was a result of neoliberal policies which did not take into consideration the needs of the working class. The result was a society marked by poverty and lack of job opportunities. Groups of unemployed people opted to organize and made roadblocks to obtain social plans and other benefits from the government. Most of the people who compose these movements are women. This investigation analyzes the changes that have occurred in piquetero women’s daily life after their initiation in the social movements. It …

Ley Y Desorden: La Participación, La Política, Y La Planificación En El Archipiélago De Bocas Del Toro, Sage E. Trombulak

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Bocas del Toro Archipelago is quickly becoming one of Panama’s most popular destinations, both for tourists pursuing temporary fun-in-the-sun type activities and for wealthy Panamanians, Americans, and Europeans seeking a more permanent location for their vacation homes, luxury resorts, and retirement communities. These dual phenomena have become a subject of escalating concern for the political leadership in Bocas del Toro and for a plethora of local, regional, and international NGOs, as unprecedented levels of development are leading to the degradation of one of Panama’s most beautiful and biologically diverse landscapes, stresses on urban infrastructure, and rapid economic growth that …

La Economía Del Transporte Público En Santiago De Chile, Jacqueline Ann Strenio

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Throughout the years, as well as the world, transportation has always played a large role in the economic development of countries, cities and people. However, the idea of public transportation as a theme of study and investigation has only recently taken priority among the other problems facing developing nations. In the developed countries of the world, public transportation is viewed as a solution to the problems of congestion and contamination. However, the role it plays is reversed in countries such as Chile. In the capital city of Santiago where almost half of all daily journeys are made using some means …

“Sweeping The Heavens For A Comet”: Women, The Language Of Political Economy, And Higher Education In The United States, Ann Mari May Oct 2006

“Sweeping The Heavens For A Comet”: Women, The Language Of Political Economy, And Higher Education In The United States, Ann Mari May

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The importance of increased levels of education in improving the status of women throughout the world is well established. Higher levels of education are associated with lower birth rates, higher incomes, and greater autonomy for women. Yet, women’s struggle to have a voice in higher education has been fraught with difficulties in the US and worldwide, particularly in overcoming widely held perceptions that limit their entrance into certain academic fields, tenured positions, and elite universities. This essay examines the role political economy has played in providing narratives that rationalize women’s limited participation in higher education. By examining the representation of …

Adaptive Estimation Of Autoregressive Models With Time-Varying Variances, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 2006

Adaptive Estimation Of Autoregressive Models With Time-Varying Variances, Ke-Li Xu, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Stable autoregressive models of known finite order are considered with martingale differences errors scaled by an unknown nonparametric time-varying function generating heterogeneity. An important special case involves structural change in the error variance, but in most practical cases the pattern of variance change over time is unknown and may involve shifts at unknown discrete points in time, continuous evolution or combinations of the two. This paper develops kernel-based estimators of the residual variances and associated adaptive least squares (ALS) estimators of the autoregressive coefficients. These are shown to be asymptotically efficient, having the same limit distribution as the infeasible generalized …

Media Ownership Matters: Localism, The Ethinic Minority, News Audience And Community Participation, Kehbuma Langmia Oct 2006

Media Ownership Matters: Localism, The Ethinic Minority, News Audience And Community Participation, Kehbuma Langmia

Department of Strategic, Legal, and Management Communications Faculty Publications

The study’s goals were to explore patterns in news consumption in ethnic minority communities and to discern the relationship of that consumption to community participation. We interviewed 196 participants in three Washington, DC, metro neighborhoods. Participants were African-American, Latino, African and other ethnic minorities, 52% female and 48% male. About half the participants said they get their news from television, with Fox and NBC preferred. About a fourth said they read a newspaper. Those listening to radio (18%) overwhelmingly preferred a minority-owned station. Participants leaned toward believing the news did not help them to understand crime, rising costs of living …

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith Oct 2006

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Corruption in Montenegro exists on various levels. The focus of this paper is high level corruption, particularly conflict of interest cases regarding privatization processes, spatial planning and the procurement of public contracts. The reason for this focus is that the abuse of power by the government is one of the largest obstacles to creating a democratic environment of trust and a society structured around the rule of law. These are the primary areas were the government of Montenegro continues to exert inappropriate influence. The first section of the paper will analyze the origins of corruption and attempt to simultaneously provide …

Identifying And Preventing Pain In Animals, Daniel M. Weary, Lee Niel, Frances C. Flower, David Fraser Oct 2006

Identifying And Preventing Pain In Animals, Daniel M. Weary, Lee Niel, Frances C. Flower, David Fraser

Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection

Animals are routinely subjected to painful procedures, such as tail docking for puppies, castration for piglets, dehorning for dairy calves, and surgery for laboratory rats. Disease and injury, such as tumours in mice and sole ulcers on the feet of dairy cows, may also cause pain. In this paper we describe some of the ways in which the pain that animals experience can be recognized and quantified. We also describe ways in which pain can be avoided or reduced, by reconsidering how procedures are performed and whether they are actually required. Ultimately, reducing the pain that animals experience will require …

The Changing Concept Of Animal Sentience, Ian J. H. Duncan Oct 2006

The Changing Concept Of Animal Sentience, Ian J. H. Duncan

Sentience Collection

A brief history of the concept of sentience is given. It is pointed out that the idea of sentience, at least in the mammals and birds, was accepted by lay people by the time of the Renaissance and before it was acknowledged by philosophers. It was not until the Enlightenment of the 18th century that philosophers started to accept the notion that animals have feelings. Towards the end of the 19th century, scientists and philosophers had developed a fairly sophisticated concept of sentience. Little consideration was given to sentience by scientists through much of the 20th century due to the …
