Book Review Of Determining The Economic Value Of Water: Concepts And Methods By Robert A. Youngbook Review Of Determining The Economic Value Of Water: Concepts And Methods By Robert A. Young, David W. Yoskowitz Oct 2006

Book Review Of Determining The Economic Value Of Water: Concepts And Methods By Robert A. Youngbook Review Of Determining The Economic Value Of Water: Concepts And Methods By Robert A. Young, David W. Yoskowitz

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Water has been and will continue to be a contentious issue for policy makers, landowners, municipalities, environmentalists, and citizens who feels they have an undeniable right to clean water delivered to their homes (at least in the United States). With so many groups coming into conflict over what, at least in the West and the Great Plains, continues to be a diminishing resource per capita, an understanding of the economic value of this resource is critical. It is important to note, as Robert Young does throughout his book, that the true economic value of water goes beyond what we pay …

Book Review Of The Limits Of Participation: Members And Leaders In Canada's Reform Party By Faron Ellis, David J. Hall Oct 2006

Book Review Of The Limits Of Participation: Members And Leaders In Canada's Reform Party By Faron Ellis, David J. Hall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The Reform Party began as a populist party of regional protest in western Canada in 1987. Its policies were mostly on the right of the political spectrum, and from the early 1990s it developed ambitions to become a national party. In 2000 it amalgamated with some Progressive Conservatives (PC) to form the Canadian Alliance (CA), and in 2003 the CA and a rump of the PC Party united to form the Conservative Party of Canada; in January 2006 the Conservatives won a minority government. Although Faron Ellis's book was completed too early to include much about the denouement of this …

Book Review Of New Destinations: Mexican Immigration In The United States Edited By Victor Zuniga And Ruben Hernandez Leon, David M. Heer Oct 2006

Book Review Of New Destinations: Mexican Immigration In The United States Edited By Victor Zuniga And Ruben Hernandez Leon, David M. Heer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

A noteworthy feature of Mexican immigration to the United States during the decade from 1990 to 2000 was a significant change in destinations. Traditional receiving states gained a much smaller proportion of all Mexican immigrants while numbers in various Southern and Midwestern states soared. The percentage of all recent Mexican immigrants in California in 1990, for example, was 62.9 % percent, and only 35.4% in 2000. On the other hand, the percentage of all recent Mexican immigrants in North Carolina in 1990 was 0.3% as compared with 4.0% in 2000.

Book Review Of Laud Humphreys: Prophet Of Homosexuality And Sociology By John F. Galliher, Wayne H. Brekhus, And David P. Keys, Stephen Valocchi Oct 2006

Book Review Of Laud Humphreys: Prophet Of Homosexuality And Sociology By John F. Galliher, Wayne H. Brekhus, And David P. Keys, Stephen Valocchi

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

As an undergraduate sociology major, the only thing I learned about Oklahoman Laud Humphreys's classic, Tearoom Trade (1970) was how it violated standards of informed consent in social science research. As Galliher, Brekhus, and Keys recount in their biography, Laud Humphreys: Prophet of Homosexuality and Sociology, sociology graduate student Laud Humphreys needed to supplement his (quite likely, participant) observational research of men who had sex in public bathrooms (i.e., tearooms) in St. Louis in the mid-1960s with a formal questionnaire. Knowing that these men would never agree if they knew they were selected because of their participation in highly …

Book Review Of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?": Aboriginal Communities, Restorative Justice, And The Challenges Of Conflict And Change By Jane Dickson-Gilmore And Carol La Prairie, Tim Quigley Oct 2006

Book Review Of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?": Aboriginal Communities, Restorative Justice, And The Challenges Of Conflict And Change By Jane Dickson-Gilmore And Carol La Prairie, Tim Quigley

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Over the past decade or two, restorative justice has become a popular approach for the criminal justice system to take in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. In part, this is due in all three countries to an appalling disproportionality in the incarceration rates for racialized minorities. As the authors of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" point out, however, governments have been attracted to restorative justice for cost-cutting reasons as well. A burning question, therefore, is whether restorative justice works.

Book Review Of Improved Earth: Prairie Space As Modern Artefact, 1869-1944 By Rod Bantjes, Arn Keeling Oct 2006

Book Review Of Improved Earth: Prairie Space As Modern Artefact, 1869-1944 By Rod Bantjes, Arn Keeling

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

In this short but suggestive study, sociologist Rod Bantjes examines how contending visions of modernity shaped the social and physical landscapes of the Canadian prairies. "[B]oth statesmen and prairie farmers were infused with the modernist spirit of innovation, the will creatively (and destructively) to transform their worlds," Bantjes argues. His provocative view of farmers as agents of modernity reflects recent scholarship that seeks to explore "multiple modernities," or the notion that ideas and practices of modernism must be regarded not as monolithic but rather as contested and multivocal, and must be examined in their historical and geographical contexts.

Schumpeter's Creative Destruction: A Review Of The Evidence, Arthur M. Diamond Jr. Oct 2006

Schumpeter's Creative Destruction: A Review Of The Evidence, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Economics Faculty Publications

Thoughtful scholars from Adam Smith to Jared Diamond, have asked the same life-and-death question: why do some societies succeed, and others fail, in producing the goods that make life long, healthy and prosperous? Smith's answer was basically that when societies adopt the rules of market capitalism, their economies grow,:and when they do not adopt the rules of market capitalism, their economies do not. Since Smith, other economists have developed more formal models of economic growth. The classic "Solow growth model" emphasized the investment of capital. Romer's "New Growth Theory," includes knowledge as a variable. What is mainly missing from both …

The Impact Of Family Complexity On The Attitudes Toward An International Career Of Russian Nationals, H. W. Collier, R. E. Jones, Carl B. Mcgowan Oct 2006

The Impact Of Family Complexity On The Attitudes Toward An International Career Of Russian Nationals, H. W. Collier, R. E. Jones, Carl B. Mcgowan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines attitudes of Russian MBA students toward international careers and finds that family complexity impacts responses. Respondents who have complex family situations were slightly favorable toward international careers with average survey response values of about 2.50. The average response values for survey respondents who were not in complex family situations were neutral (3.00) toward an international career. The results of this survey indicate that Russian MBA students are, on average, only slightly favorable toward international careers. The average response values were not different based on gender since the average response value for males was 2.65 and the average …

Exploring Mediating And Moderating Relationships Amongst Some Switching Barriers In The Business Services Sector, Venkata K. Yanamandram, L. White Oct 2006

Exploring Mediating And Moderating Relationships Amongst Some Switching Barriers In The Business Services Sector, Venkata K. Yanamandram, L. White

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a research model to explore the (i) direct effects of independent variables (interpersonal relationship and attractiveness of alternatives) on behavioural loyalty, (ii) the mediating effects of dependence and calculative commitment on the relationship between independent variables and behavioural loyalty, and (iii) the moderating role of subjective knowledge on the relationship between attractiveness of alternatives and dependence. While the direct effects of interpersonal relationships and attractiveness of alternatives have been examined in a business-to-business (B2B) context, there is no research yet known that investigates these constructs under conditions of dissatisfaction in the B2B services sector. Similarly, there is …

New Voices: Interactive Cd-Roms For Library Instruction And Discovering A Research Agenda, Jodi Poe, John-Bauer Graham Oct 2006

New Voices: Interactive Cd-Roms For Library Instruction And Discovering A Research Agenda, Jodi Poe, John-Bauer Graham

The Southeastern Librarian

This paper describes the development of an instruction/orientation platform that teaches students, specifically the distance education students, at our university how to access, navigate, and understand the services and resources available to them via the university library. However, there is another purpose to this paper that the authors believe to be just as valuable to other “new voices” in our profession. To that end, this paper examines how two new librarians attempted to better serve their patrons. But it also looks at how, through the instruction project’s development, two new academic librarians discovered that one lone project could benefit the …

“Il Faut Manger” : Eating Disorders In Cameroonian Women, Jennifer Madowitz Oct 2006

“Il Faut Manger” : Eating Disorders In Cameroonian Women, Jennifer Madowitz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study is to investigate unhealthy eating attitudes and negative body images in young Cameroonian women. The study will center around a standardized questionnaire that covers eating attitudes. The research will also focus on the traditional Cameroonian idea of beauty, versus the more Western, “modern,” body image that is popular today. By exploring cultural factors through observation, as well as interviews, and analyzing key statistics from the questionnaire, this paper has come to the conclusion that though the problem of eating disorders and body dissatisfaction are not as high in Cameroon as they are in the United …

The Scholarship Of Vietnameseness: The Dialectic Of “National Identity” Between Self And Society In Vietnamese Education, Amber North Oct 2006

The Scholarship Of Vietnameseness: The Dialectic Of “National Identity” Between Self And Society In Vietnamese Education, Amber North

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study explores how college aged youth from various regional time and space identities access “national identity” in Vietnam. The study uses a theoretical framework as follows (1) Benedict Anderson’s theory that “nation” is in an “imagined” community (2) Keith Taylor’s theory of how surface orientations of linear time and space do not accurately characterize history. (3) Subaltern Studies: a field of Postcolonial Criticism that considers the alternative historical narratives of subalterns (non-elites, and for our purposes the nationally marginalized). Using this theoretical framework, I then explore how the youth access this “national imagination.” How is it that students connect …

The Bloomberg Way: Development Politics, Urban Ideology, And Class Transformation In Contemporary New York City, Julian Brash Oct 2006

The Bloomberg Way: Development Politics, Urban Ideology, And Class Transformation In Contemporary New York City, Julian Brash

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the links between a development project, a particular urban ideology, and processes of class transformation in contemporary New York City. The city's postindustrial transformation, especially since the 1970s fiscal crisis, has created a newly dominant corporate elite consisting of executives and high-level professionals. This ruling class alliance has begun to supersede the city's older, real estate-centered traditional growth coalition, as emblematized by the political rise of billionaire ex-CEO Michael Bloomberg. Mayor Bloomberg, along with other ex-corporate executives in his administration, implemented a private-sector inspired corporate, technocratic, and antipolitical approach to governance in general and urban and economic …
