Comparison Of Methods And Interdisciplinary Possibilities. The Case Of Literature Reviews In Social Work And In Nursing Sciences, Yves Couturier, Christian Dumas-Laverdière Mar 2006

Comparison Of Methods And Interdisciplinary Possibilities. The Case Of Literature Reviews In Social Work And In Nursing Sciences, Yves Couturier, Christian Dumas-Laverdière

The Qualitative Report

The reflections on interdisciplinarity cover several dimensions. One, among them, concerns the nature of what occurs between two disciplines. Does inter-disciplinarity relate to an intention, to a metatheory, to the object, or to a method? It is this ultimate space that we propose to study, supported by Resweber’s (2000) proposition, putting the study of the homology of forms forward as a promising way to better understand the interdisciplinarity. Therefore, we have modelled the literature review methods for social work and nursing in order to clarify what expresses, on the plan of the method, either some form homologies or else some …

A Necessary Evil: The Experiences Of Managers Implementing Downsizing Programmes, Ernesto Noronha, Premilla D'Cruz Mar 2006

A Necessary Evil: The Experiences Of Managers Implementing Downsizing Programmes, Ernesto Noronha, Premilla D'Cruz

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents the findings of a phenomenological study, which describes the experiences of human resource (HR) managers implementing a downsizing programme in a steel manufacturing organisation in India. Data were collected through conversational interviews. Following van Manens sententious analytic approach, the core theme of a necessary evil, emerged, which indicates that while participants were pained by their task of having to terminate workers and deprive them of their livelihood, they believed that they had no choice in the matter if they had to ensure the competitive position of the organisation and their own survival as employees. The findings of …

Low Self-Esteem Of Psychotherapy Patients: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jacob D. Van Zyl, Elsje M. Cronjé, Catharine Payze Mar 2006

Low Self-Esteem Of Psychotherapy Patients: A Qualitative Inquiry, Jacob D. Van Zyl, Elsje M. Cronjé, Catharine Payze

The Qualitative Report

In this article the story of 11 male psychotherapeutic patients with low self- esteem is told within the context of the research process. The literature suggests that the concept of “self-esteem” has a significant influence on the way an individual experiences his/her world. Therefore, the meaning that the psychotherapeutic patients associated with negative and positive labels, as it relates to self-esteem, was examined using grounded theory. The main storyline is conceptualized as follows; negative suggestion from the patient’s past leads to low self-esteem which is, within his emotional problematics and by means of a negative thinking scheme, unhealthily handled. Therapy …

Chinese Views On Modern Marco Polos: New Foreign Trade Amendments After Wto Accession, Heng Wang Mar 2006

Chinese Views On Modern Marco Polos: New Foreign Trade Amendments After Wto Accession, Heng Wang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) at the end of 2001, it has made substantial, even heroic, efforts to change its laws and regulations. WTO accession has brought not only amendments to formal written laws, but greater transparency in government administration, enhanced opportunities for Chinese entrepreneurs, and more equal treatment between foreign and domestic business organizations. One crucial step forward is the Duiwai Maoyi Fa 2004 [Foreign Trade Act 2004] (“FTA 2004”), which amended the Duiwai Maoyi Fa 1994 [Foreign Trade Act 1994] (“FTA 1994”). With just over one year’s experience operating under this new foreign trade …

Qualitative Differences Between Naïve And Scientific Theories Of Evolution, Andrew Shtulman Feb 2006

Qualitative Differences Between Naïve And Scientific Theories Of Evolution, Andrew Shtulman

Andrew Shtulman

Philosophers of biology have long argued that Darwin’s theory of evolution was qualitatively different from all earlier theories of evolution. Whereas Darwin’s predecessors and contemporaries explained adaptation as the transformation of a species’ “essence,” Darwin explained adaptation as the selective propagation of randomly occurring mutations within a population. The present study explored the possibility of a parallel between early “transformational” theories of evolution and modern naïve theories. Forty-two high school and college students and three evolutionary biologists were tested on their understanding of six evolutionary phenomena: variation, inheritance, adaptation, domestication, speciation, and extinction. As predicted, a plurality of participants demonstrated …

Nationalism In Winter Sports Judging And Its Lessons For Organizational Decision Making, Eric Zitzewitz Feb 2006

Nationalism In Winter Sports Judging And Its Lessons For Organizational Decision Making, Eric Zitzewitz

Eric Zitzewitz

This paper exploits nationalistic biases in Olympic winter sports judging to study the problem of designing a decision-making process that uses the input of potentially biased agents. Judges score athletes from their own countries higher than other judges do, and they appear to vary their biases strategically in response to the stakes, the scrutiny given the event, and the degree of subjectivity of the performance aspect being scored. Ski jumping judges display a taste for fairness in that they compensate for the nationalistic biases of other panel members, while figure skating judges appear to engage in vote trading and bloc …

Let's Be Friends: Relational Self-Construal And The Development Of Intimacy, Jonathan Gore, Susan Cross, Michael Morris Feb 2006

Let's Be Friends: Relational Self-Construal And The Development Of Intimacy, Jonathan Gore, Susan Cross, Michael Morris

Jonathan Gore

Two studies examined the role of relational self-construal in the development and maintenance of intimacy in roommate relationships. In Study 1, 98 roommate pairs completed questionnaires assessing attitudes toward their relationship. Results showed that high relationals disclosed more personal information than lows, which was then associated with their roommates’ perceptions of relationship quality. In Study 2, 142 roommate pairs followed the Study 1 procedure with a 1-month follow-up session for the participants (86% returned). Results replicated the findings of Study 1 and showed reciprocated disclosure from the roommates, followed by increased disclosure by the participants at Time 2. These findings …

Critical Information Literacy: Implications For Instructional Practice, James Elmborg Feb 2006

Critical Information Literacy: Implications For Instructional Practice, James Elmborg

James K. Elmborg

This article uses critical literacy theory to define information literacy. It argues that to be educators, librarians must focus less on information transfer and more on developing critical consciousness in students. Using concepts from literacy theory, the author suggests ways library practice would change if librarians redefined themselves as literacy educators. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.

The Role Of Depression In Withdrawal From Renal Dialysis, Elizabeth Mcdade-Montez, Alan Christensen, Jaime Cvengros, William Lawton Feb 2006

The Role Of Depression In Withdrawal From Renal Dialysis, Elizabeth Mcdade-Montez, Alan Christensen, Jaime Cvengros, William Lawton

Alan J. Christensen

Among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis, death from withdrawal from life-sustaining dialysis is increasingly common. The present study's objective was to examine depression as a potential risk factor for hemodialysis withdrawal. Two hundred forty ESRD hemodialysis (133 male and 107 female) patients were followed for an average of 4 years after depression symptom assessment. Of these, 18% withdrew from dialysis. Using multivariate survival analysis and after controlling for the effects of age (p = .001) and clinical variables, the authors found that level of depression symptoms was a unique and significant predictive risk factor for the subsequent decision …

La Imagen Del Imperio: Los Estudios Sobre Wari En La Arqueología Peruana, Patricia Chirinos Ogata

Patricia Chirinos Ogata

In Peru and in the rest of the world, a great part of the information that helps us to understand the past comes from the story of archaeological practice itself. This article presents some thoughts about how the story of archaeological research in Peru has defined the concept that we have now about Wari and the Middle Horizon, and the impact of this phenomenon in the academic, social, political and cultural spheres.

The Muddy Creek Project: Evolution Of A Field-Based Research And Learning Collaborative, Alice Jones, Danita Sage, Tom Edwards Feb 2006

The Muddy Creek Project: Evolution Of A Field-Based Research And Learning Collaborative, Alice Jones, Danita Sage, Tom Edwards

Alice Jones

For three years an on-going multidisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach collaboration has focused on the Muddy Creek Watershed in east-central Kentucky. At the core of the effort is a three-way partnership among a geologist, a geographer, and a biologist-two academic, one a state agency representative. The collaboration frequently includes additional academic partners, nonprofit and community members, and government agency personnel. It has produced graduate and undergraduate student learning experiences from individual student field projects, a course redesigned to include a major class project, and the incorporation of additional field-based components into existing coursework. Logistical and financial challenges require creativity to …

Evaluating The Long-Run Impacts Of The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks On U.S. Airline Travel, Scott Blunk, David Clark, James Mcgibany Feb 2006

Evaluating The Long-Run Impacts Of The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks On U.S. Airline Travel, Scott Blunk, David Clark, James Mcgibany

David E. Clark

Although the US airline industry began 2001 with 24 consecutive profitable quarters, including net profits in 2000 totaling $7.9 billion, the impact of the 9/11 event on the industry was substantial. Whereas the recession that began in early 2001 signaled the end of profitability, the 9/11 terrorist attacks pushed the industry into financial crisis after air travel dropped 20% over the September-December 2001 period compared to the same period in 2000. Given the decline in domestic air travel, an important question is whether the detrimental impact of the attacks was temporary or permanent. That is, did airline travel return to …

Cambios En La Composición Del Empleo Y Evolución De La Productividad Del Trabajo En El Sector Formal De La Economía Mexicana: 2000-2005, Carlo Alcaraz, Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu Feb 2006

Cambios En La Composición Del Empleo Y Evolución De La Productividad Del Trabajo En El Sector Formal De La Economía Mexicana: 2000-2005, Carlo Alcaraz, Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu

Rodrigo Garcia-Verdu

12. Caregiver Support And Child Sexual Abuse: Why Does It Matter?, Lindsay C. Malloy, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

Coohey’s paper is a valuable investigation of the substantiation of mothers for failure to protect their children from child sexual abuse (CSA). Drawing on concerns regarding the possible inconsistency of decisions to substantiate, the author sought to determine the factors relied on by CPS investigators in the decision-making process. Multivariate analyses revealed the importance of maternal reactions to abuse, including whether the mother believed the child’s allegations and whether she acted in a protective or supportive manner. We will put Coohey’s findings in the context of other research that has documented the importance of nonoffending caregivers’ reactions to sexual abuse. …

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability Feb 2006

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability

Sandra Wooltorton

I contend that for progress towards a sustainable future, we need an understanding of sustainability as having a core of reconnective learning as an inbuilt ‘driver’. Many writers such as Sterling (2001: 19) call for the elaboration of a new, lived paradigm of sustainable education and learning sustainability. In this chapter, I use notions of primary and secondary meaning and Heron’s (1996) and Reason’s (2004) framework of experiential, presentational, propositional and practical knowledge to propose a transformative, reconnective process for learning sustainability. I articulate a holistic, relational ontology and a participatory epistemology as the basis of the participatory approach. The …
