The Anchor, Volume 119.13: February 1, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Japanese Technology Policy For Aged Care, N. Dethlefs, Brian Martin Feb 2006

Japanese Technology Policy For Aged Care, N. Dethlefs, Brian Martin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Aged care provision is a burning issue in Japan due to the country's unparalleled longevity and a fraying tradition of children caring for parents. Use of technology offers one approach to helping ease the increasing burden of aged care. Ways of using technology can be conveniently classified into three options. The first is to rely on well-tested technologies developed outside Japan. The second option is for significant Japanese investment in high-technology aged care supports, including robotics. The third option is for significant Japanese development in barrier-free technology, a low-technology direction. Articulating these options and spelling out their likely consequences helps …

Workplace Bullying - A Complex Issue Neeing Ir/Hrm Research?, Diana J. Kelly Feb 2006

Workplace Bullying - A Complex Issue Neeing Ir/Hrm Research?, Diana J. Kelly

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Workplace bullying encompasses a wide array of targeted, persistent and destructive behaviours, usually by managers towards their subordinates. It is an extensive and seemingly growing phenomenon which is costly to individuals, workplaces and organisations. The costs for organisations include productivity loss, turnover, and increased legal and insurance costs. There are also considerable costs to individuals and the ethical capital of organisations, but this is more difficult to measure. Curiously IR and HRM scholars have rarely undertaken systematic investigation or analysis of the issue, despite the fact that it appears to be an issue squarely within the purview of these disciplines. …

How Dangerous Is The U.S. Current Account Deficit?, William Poole Feb 2006

How Dangerous Is The U.S. Current Account Deficit?, William Poole

Center for Applied Economics

The U.S. current account deficit has attracted considerable attention from academics, policymakers and market participants. So also has the U.S. international investment position—the difference between U.S.-owned assets abroad and foreign-owned assets in the United States. The net position has become increasingly negative as current account deficits have accumulated over time. I have spoken on international topics several times in recent years, emphasizing the importance of international capital flows for explaining the evolution of the U.S. international accounts. I’ll review some of my prior analysis today, but want to concentrate on the question in my title.

Political Context And The Turnout Of New Women Voters After Suffrage, Kevin Corder, Christina Wolbrecht Feb 2006

Political Context And The Turnout Of New Women Voters After Suffrage, Kevin Corder, Christina Wolbrecht

Political Science Faculty Publications

Many observers expected new women voters to respond to their political context in distinctive ways. Some scholars anticipated that newly-enfranchised women—lacking political interest and experience—would be volatile and highly responsive to context. Others expected political isolation and norms proscribing political activity would insulate women from political stimuli. We test these competing predictions with a Bayesian approach to ecological inference and a unique set of aggregate data.We find that the responsiveness of women’s turnout is strikingly similar to that of men. However, the lesser impact of electoral competition, and the greater effect of electoral laws and prior suffrage activism, suggest that the …

The Value Of The Container, Carol Tenopir Feb 2006

The Value Of The Container, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

WHY ALL THE FUSS ABOUT ELECtronic journals? That was the question raised by Michael Gorman, the outspoken president of the American Library Association (ALA), at a session on "Future of Libraries" at the recent Online Information Meeting in London. "What we want is articles," said Gorman, calling the idea of putting them together in things called journals "irrelevant."

"We don't need e-journals," said the controversial Gorman. Articles should be put together by "our interests, not the editor's." The real problem, according to Gorman, is that there is no viable economic model. "Buying all articles [including those no one reads] is …

Editors’ Note: Simile Progress Report, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

As Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education (SIMILE) enters its sixth year of publication, the coeditors have identified a number of issues to be addressed in the journal’s development. This editors’ note explores how the field of media and information literacy education has grown in importance. There continues to be a need for both theory-building and empirical research data, which would strengthen conceptualization. SIMILE needs to cultivate a global sense of significance about media and information literacy education issues across many disciplines.
