Mine Free: Not Anytime Soon, Richard Kidd Feb 2006

Mine Free: Not Anytime Soon, Richard Kidd

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mine action is changing. This is not 1997 and what the international community has learned in the past eight years clearly indicates that the path forward is something different from what a literal reading of the Ottawa Convention would suggest. The Landmine Impact Survey process has demonstrated very clearly that only a small portion of the minefields—normally less than 20 percent—account for the vast majority of casualties and lost economic opportunities. The mine action community has a responsibility to profit from this new knowledge and to adjust its approach accordingly.

Mine Action And Development, Earl Turcotte Feb 2006

Mine Action And Development, Earl Turcotte

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The author explains why he thinks the international mine action and broader development communities are moving in the right direction by mainstreaming mine action into development programs where the degree of landmine contamination warrants.

Lexicographic Composition Of Simple Games, Bezalel Peleg Feb 2006

Lexicographic Composition Of Simple Games, Bezalel Peleg

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A two-house legislature can often be modelled as a proper simple game whose outcome depends on whether a coalition wins, blocks or loses in two smaller proper simple games. It is shown that there are exactly five ways to combine the smaller games into a larger one. This paper focuses on one of the rules, lexicographic composition , where a coalition wins in G 1 => G 2 when it either wins in G 1 , or blocks in G 1 and wins in G 2 . It is the most decisive of the five. A lexicographically decomposable game is …

Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller Feb 2006

Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Leaders and historians see prestige as important, but international relations theorists have neglected the concept, in part for lack of a clear definition. It is proposed that a party “holds prestige” when group members generally believe that the party has a certain desirable quality, and this situation gives the party perceived power in the group. The definition gains support from a survey of international affairs writings on the sources of prestige. Prestige is strategically important when a party wants support from others who would rather join the side that more of the others are joining. Some general ways of acquiring …

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter Feb 2006

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The nonresidential parent plays a role in the lives of stepchildren and in stepfamily households. The focus of the present study was on the interaction between the nonresidential parent and his/her child who resides as part of a stepfamily household. Grounded in relational dialectics theory, the researchers performed an interpretive analysis of 50 transcribed interviews with college-aged stepchildren. Stepchildren’s perceptions of communication with the nonresidential parent were animated by two contradictions: parenting/nonparenting and openness/closedness. These two contradictions form a totality, interwoven with one another. The parenting/nonparenting contradiction reflected stepchildren’s ambivalence over parenting attempts of nonresidential parents. Stepchildren wanted nonresidential parent …

Inching Towards Democracy, Ana Damasio Feb 2006

Inching Towards Democracy, Ana Damasio

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The Muslim Brotherhood is the main opposition group in Egypt. As the parliamentary elections of November confirmed this status, the organization maintains its demands for political inclusion. This does not seem a probable scenario in the short-term though slow moves towards reform are being taken by the government. The first multi-candidate presidential election of September is one of such steps. If this will be branded an isolated event or the starting point of a wider process of transition remains to be seen. This study focuses on the Muslim Brotherhood and its eventual formal inclusion within a scenario of democratization. Arguments …

Measuring The Degree Of Central Bank Independence In Egypt, Noha Aboubakr Farrag Feb 2006

Measuring The Degree Of Central Bank Independence In Egypt, Noha Aboubakr Farrag

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The past few years have witnessed a trend of increased delegation of authority to central banks. Increasing central bank independence is a recommended strategy for governments to establish a credible commitment to price stability as the final objective of the monetary authority, even at the cost of other objectives that may be more appealing to the political authorities. Existing literature on measuring central bank independence focuses on developed countries where quantifying the independence of central banks is easier, since quantifying the legal charter is sufficient to reflect the degree of central bank independence. However, in developing countries this task is …

Interface Between Ip And Competition Law In Taiwan, Kung-Chung Liu Feb 2006

Interface Between Ip And Competition Law In Taiwan, Kung-Chung Liu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The modernization of Taiwan’s intellectual property (IP) laws has been most marked in the last 10 to 15 years.] During that period, Taiwan also responded to U.S. Section 301 pressure by enacting and enforcing the Fair Trade Act of 1991, a general competition law. The issue of the interface between IP and antitrust law has gradually gained sigdcance in the last couple of years. To some extent, as its development in Taiwan testifies, competition law has circumscribed the scope of IP laws and inacted a spd-over effect on the IP laws. The ramification of competition law in Taiwan with regard …

An Exploration Of Structural, Cultural And Institutional Factors Behind The Japanese Recession, 1990-2000, Yasmin Ahmed Mowafy Feb 2006

An Exploration Of Structural, Cultural And Institutional Factors Behind The Japanese Recession, 1990-2000, Yasmin Ahmed Mowafy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyses the causes behind the Japanese economic downturn which started in the 1990s and investigates the failure of both fiscal and monetary policy to remedy the recession. The author asserts that the Japanese economy was due for recession when two factors occurred to precipitate it, the asset price bubble and the banking crisis. However, a recession would have occurred even if these events had not transpired, because of a number of structural factors. The recession was then prolonged by the existence of the "liquidity trap". The inevitability of the recession stems from the fact that the Japanese economy …
