Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey Nov 2006

Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

In 1997, Harvey Johnson made history by becoming the first black to be elected as mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Four years prior, Johnson failed to make the Democratic primary runoffs. The following research question is addressed: what explains Johnson’s victory in 1997, when compared to his defeat in 1993? In answering this question, I rely heavily on elite-level interviewing and newspaper accounts. I also examine the black and white vote for Johnson, using aggregate-level election and census data. Gary King’s Ecological Inference technique is used to examine these data. Based on the findings, I conclude that Johnson ran a deracialized …

Incongruence Between Genetic And Morphological Diversity In Microcebus Griseorufus On Beza Mahafaly, Laurie Godfrey, K. L. Heckman, E. Rasoazanabary, E. Machlin, A. D. Yoder

Laurie R. Godfrey

Background - The past decade has seen a remarkable increase in the number of recognized mouse lemur species (genus Microcebus). As recently as 1994, only two species of mouse lemur were recognized according to the rules of zoological nomenclature. That number has now climbed to as many as fifteen proposed species. Indeed, increases in recognized species diversity have also characterized other nocturnal primates – galagos, sportive lemurs, and tarsiers. Presumably, the movement relates more to a previous lack of information than it does to any recent proclivity for taxonomic splitting. Due to their nocturnal habits, one can hypothesize that mouse …

Teaching And Learning In Accounting Education: Students' Perceptions Of The Linkages Between Teaching Context, Approaches To Learning And Outcomes, A. Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Research in accounting education has almost neglected both student perceptions of the learning context and their approaches to learning. Instead, studies have focused on either the teaching context or the outcomes of learning. This omission has meant that accounting educators often experience difficulty in understanding what students conceive learning to be, how they perceive the learning task, or how they approach learning. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the perceptions, the approaches and the outcomes of students in a business subject in order to discover how these students learn, and thus to provide some strategies …

Download Statistics - What Do They Tell Us? The Example Of Research Online, The Open Access Institutional Repository At The University Of Wollongong, Australia, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

A study was undertaken of download and usage statistics for the institutional repository at the University of Wollongong, Australia, over the six-month period January-June 2006. The degree to which research output was made available, via open access, on Internet search engines was quantified. Google was identified as the primary access and referral point, generating 95.8% of the measurable full text downloads of repository content. Further long-term studies need to be carried out to more precisely identify factors affecting download rates of repository content. This data will assist institutions and faculty in measuring research impact and performance, as an adjunct to …

As a result of the explosion the deminer received minor injuries to his left hand and crush injuries to his left arm plus a single wound (1 to 1.5cm) to his left thigh where a foreign body penetrated the muscle. The [National demining agency] doctor indicated this object to be a small stone. These injuries indicate that his left hand was close to the point of detonation and he was facing sideways to allow the foreign object to pass under his protective vest. This is not consistent with proper use of the prodder but could be said to be consistent …
