Advocates and service providers frequently cite inadequate transportation as one of the major problems facing people with disabilities, especially those living in rural communities. Many approaches have been tried to address this problem. People with disabilities and community service providers frequently suggest that local faith-based organizations (FBOs) such as churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and other organizations might be involved in improving transportation. In 2004, RTC: Rural conducted a national survey of recipients of Section 5310 Formula Grants for Special Needs of Elderly Individuals and Individuals with Disabilities. An Empirical Analysis Of Child Custody Decisions: A Mulitnomial Logit Analysis Of Case Level U.S. Data, Susan Gardner

Despite growing interest in the analysis of family structure (in particular divorce) and its impact on the social and economic development of children, little empirical research has attempted to analyze the factors that explain the child custody decisions of the courts. In this paper, I analyze a random sample of 222 state level child custody court decisions in an attempt to uncover the factors that significantly influence the outcome of the decision. In particular, using a multinomial logit approach, I am able to more accurately assess the role of social, demographic, and legal characteristics of each case. Unlike previous work, …

Police Socialization: An Exploratory Study At The Academy Level, Jennifer E. Willoughby

Using a self-administered questionnaire, data was gathered on perceptions of police trainee at three law enforcement training academies. Trainees were asked to describe their motivations for entering policing and their perceptions on many different aspects of law enforcement. The study is exploratory in nature with cross-sectional availability. Variables included in this study were career influences, perceptions on work environments, and attitudes on superiors, fellow recruits, and the public. This study hopes to broaden the limited body of research that exists on police socialization. The socialization process and history of law enforcement are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided.

Our society is galvanized in that the sexual exploitation of children is an egregious crime. Yet, there is a vast store of child pornography materials readily available; materials that are the recordation of the child's actual sexual abuse. This document explores the history of child pornography, its current state and the environment in which it flourishes, the Internet. this research examines the scope of the problem and those that are associated with child pornography. This body of work is intended to provide greater understanding of the scope of the problem and provide clear and actionable public policy recommendations.

The federal program of deinstitutionalizing psychiatric facilities has resulted in a well documented, ever-increasing mentally ill population in the nation's prisons and jails. Historically, the criminal justice system has maintained a laissez-faire attitude toward the mentally ill, and only became involved with the mentally ill when a crime had been committed. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the preferences of clients of programs administered by selected federal agencies and the preferences of the federal managers who administer the programs in assessing performance measurement systems. Using the general progression of previous budgetary models used in the public sector, the researcher developed the Modified Balance Scorecard (MBSC), a performance measurement model designed specifically for use within the public sector. Surveys based on the MBSC were administered to public managers and to clients of those managers in order to determine their preferences. Tournament poker shows have become a leading ratings draw on American television. Since ESPN and the Travel Channel began airing their innovative poker shows in 2003, the game has reached a new following, particularly among college students. There are unique and psychologically significant factors that characterize the college population that make students particularly receptive to popular characterizations in media. Research has shown that female physicians continue to earn less than their male counterparts. From both social justice and feminist perspectives, laws requiring equal pay should provide just income for females as compared to males. However, the literature continues to indicate that in general females earn less than males, a trend that is also true for physicians. Theoretically informed postulates are measured here with structural equation modeling to test the influence of the unique latent construct "specialization" on the income gap while controlling for demographic and contextual variables. Although there are hundreds of programs in thousands of schools that claim to enhance some aspect of emotional intelligence (EI), research has yet to show that it can in fact be enhanced. This study used proven behavioral self-modification techniques in semester-long Psychology of Adjustment courses to help undergraduate college students improve their EI. Students used the techniques in their own self-change projects, choosing EI topics such as assertiveness, empathy, self-regard, and emotion management. Mental Disorders Among Parents/Caretakers Of American Indian Early Adolescents In The Northern Midwest, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt Johnson, Xiaojin Chen

Background: This study reports prevalence and comorbidty of five DSM-III-R diagnoses (alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, drug abuse, major depressive episode, and generalized anxiety disorder) among American Indian and Canadian First Nations parents/caretakers of children aged 10–12 years from the Northern Midwest United States and Canada. Lifetime prevalence rates were compared to adults in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) and Southwest and Northern Plains cultures from the AI-SUPERPFP study.

Method: Native interviewers used computer-assisted personal interviews to administer the University of Michigan Composite International Diagnostic Interview (UM-CIDI) to 861 tribally enrolled parents and caretakers (625 females; 236 males) of 741 tribally …

Theory, Values, And Practice In The Legal Lifeworld Of Sociological Jurisprudence: Roscoe Pound’S Views On Professional Women, Michael R. Hill

The lived social dimensions of Roscoe Pound’s theories of sociological jurisprudence deserve criticism in light of his often progressive worldview and frequent support of civil liberties. Especially important in this regard are his views on women. Despite Sayre’s (1948: 390) assertion that “there is no dualism to Pound,” the archival record reveals internal contradictions. That is to say, Pound’s attitudes toward women were multi-dimensional. His social attitudes-inpractice informed his sociological ideas and thus illustrate the lived conflicts in his professional lifeworld.

Stephen James Meredith Brown, S.J., was born in County Down, Ireland, on 24 September 1881. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and was ordained as a Jesuit in 1914. Brown also pursued studies at Tullabeg, Jersey, Paris, and Hastings. Teaching posts included Clongowes and University College. At the latter, he launched the post-graduate school of librarianship, serving on the faculty for 24 years. Brown founded the Central Catholic Library in 1922 and was its motive force for some four decades. He is remembered today as a major bibliographer of Irish literature.

The tour includes eight locales of sociological interest (see map on the last page of this booklet) and features brief pauses at the Nebraska State Historical Society and the UNL University Archives. Size And Power Property Of The Asymptotic Tests And The Bootstrap Tests In The Probit Model: Simulation Results, Xiaobin Shen

This paper compares the size and power properties of the asymptotic tests based on the asymptotic standard errors with the bootstrap tests based on the bootstrap confidence interval in the Probit model. The asymptotic tests work surprisingly well even when the sample size is quite small (e.g., n = 30) for the test of exclusion hypothesis β = 0. The bootstrap tests work similarly well. It shares essentially the same size and power property of the asymptotic tests when the null hypothesis is β = 0. However, the small sample probit estimators can be seriously biased when β/σ is large. …

Semantic query expansion is the process of supplementing a user query with additional terms that interpret and extend the user's information needs. This work presents the results of an empirical study that investigates user preferences for different designs of user interfaces that provide semantic query expansion for data search from geo-data repositories. The study assesses further whether it is possible to map qualitative gradations of semantic relatedness between geographic key terms to ranges of numerical similarity values.

This article reports on a study done among hospitality management students who participated in study abroad programs between January 2001 and May 2003. The participants in the study were both incoming students to the US and outgoing students from the US. The study investigates, among other things, why they had decided to study abroad, why they had selected a particular institution, how their home institution compared to the partner institution abroad, and what they perceived to be the benefits and relevance of their international experiences. The article that follows examines the role of mayoral leadership in two large cities in Ukraine - Kiyv and Odessa. It begins with an examination of the various roles and resources typically found in the office of mayor, as well as a review of some of the unique characteristic of local governance in Ukraine. It then examines the activities of recent mayors in the two cities. It concludes by suggesting a somewhat expanded set of mayoral roles based on the Ukrainian experience.
