Reaching Out To The Faculty: Providing Subject-Specific Academic Resources, John Jaeger
Reaching Out To The Faculty: Providing Subject-Specific Academic Resources, John Jaeger
The Christian Librarian
Library journals frequently have articles emphasizing the large gulf that seems to exist between academic librarians and teaching faculty members.1 Librarians view this divide as a serious problem and have suggested different strategies to overcome it. Ideas that have received particular prominence include establishing library liaison relationships, providing course-integrated instruction, and encouraging library/faculty research collaboration.
This article focuses primarily on a different method of engaging the faculty. Regularly sending teaching faculty helpful articles and web sites related to their academic disciplines is an easy and effective way to do outreach.

Outcome And Process Measure Feedback As They Effect Therapy Outcomes, Brett T. Copeland
Outcome And Process Measure Feedback As They Effect Therapy Outcomes, Brett T. Copeland
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
In the study of treatment outcomes, a subset of effectiveness research, the client-focused approach is ideal, as it examines individual responses to therapy over time. The Life Status Questionnaire (LSQ) is designed to track therapy outcomes over time. Despite the emphasis on client outcomes, the process between a therapist and client may have the greatest impact on therapy outcomes and should be an inherent part of a client-focused approach. This study investigated the effects of simultaneous use of an outcome (LSQ) and two Empathy Scale-Revised process subscales, Positive (ES-P) and Negative (ES-N), to determine how these separately and collectively affect …

School Readiness And Preschoolers' Attachment Representations: Possible Connections, Katherine A. Darbonne
School Readiness And Preschoolers' Attachment Representations: Possible Connections, Katherine A. Darbonne
LSU Master's Theses
The current study examined the possible relationship between preschooler's school readiness and their attachment representations. More specifically, the study examined preschooler's performances on standardized tests and their perceptions of close relationships. The possible connection between school readiness and attachment representations was through children's experiences of stress during standardized testing situations (Fleege, Charlesworth, Burts, & Hart, 1992) and children's stress invoking the use of their internal working models (Bowlby, 1969/1982). The children were administered the Brigance CIBS-R (Glascoe, 1999), a standardized test that was most often used in the local schools to assess school readiness. The children were also videotaped while …
Is Ready-To-Eat-Cereal Consumption Associated With Nutrient Adequacy And Weight Status In Hispanic-American Children And Adolescents?, Solange Stella Pineda Vargas
Is Ready-To-Eat-Cereal Consumption Associated With Nutrient Adequacy And Weight Status In Hispanic-American Children And Adolescents?, Solange Stella Pineda Vargas
LSU Master's Theses
Breakfast consumption has been associated with an improved nutrient intake and diet quality in children and adolescents. Ready to eat cereal (RTEC) breakfast contributes to macro and micronutrient intake, because it is usually fortified with vitamins and minerals, and is low in fat and high in fiber content. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of RTEC consumption on nutrient intake and weight status in Hispanic-American (HA) children and adolescents using data from 1999 to 2002 The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants were categorized by breakfast skippers, RTEC breakfast, and other breakfast consumers. Hispanic-American …
Deficits In Social Skills And Feeding Behaviors Associated With Adults Diagnosed With Autistic Disorder Living In An Institutionalized Setting, Cindy Terlonge Graham
Deficits In Social Skills And Feeding Behaviors Associated With Adults Diagnosed With Autistic Disorder Living In An Institutionalized Setting, Cindy Terlonge Graham
LSU Master's Theses
Autistic disorder, a syndrome beginning in infancy and persisting into adulthood, has captured the attention of researchers and clinicians alike. Although this disorder has been studied since the mid-1940s, there is a lack of literature addressing certain adaptive skills in adults with autism. The aim of this study was to examine the differences in social and feeding skills between individuals with and without autistic disorder. Given the importance of acquiring these skills to facilitate proper adjustment and decrease potential health risks, better understanding of these behaviors in persons with autism is warranted. Participants comprised three separate groups: an autism group, …

The Experiences Of Refugee Youth From The Conflicts In The Sudan: A Collective Case Study, Michele Kelly
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the role of familial protective factors in moderating the relationship between risk and resilience in Sudanese refugee youth exposed to political violence. Interviews, direct observations, and physical artifacts were the sources of data. Eight “Lost Boys” participated in the study, providing narratives of their experiences of the Sudanese civil wars. They also answered questions posed about the role of familial protective factors in moderating the relationship between risk and resilience. The interviews were recorded on audiotape and then transcribed. Data consisted of the transcripts and field notes of processes and observations. …
Eliminating The Judicial Function In Consumer Bankruptcy, Rafael I. Pardo
Eliminating The Judicial Function In Consumer Bankruptcy, Rafael I. Pardo
Scholarship@WashULaw
The centerpiece of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 has been the means test, a formulaic statutory directive pursuant to which courts are to presume abuse of the bankruptcy system by Chapter 7 debtors who have an ability to repay past debts with future income. This Essay provides a new insight into means testing by arguing that, more than anything else, it has brought about a significant change in the institutional design of bankruptcy courts: namely, the increased blurring of administrative and judicial functions. The Essay concludes that this development should be cause for concern as …

An Analysis Of Gender Differences In Property Crime Arrest Rates, Chanika Renee Jones
An Analysis Of Gender Differences In Property Crime Arrest Rates, Chanika Renee Jones
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examined the relationship between employment conditions and property-crime arrest rates of working-aged individuals, using gender-specific state-level data from 1979-2001, complied from raw arrest data of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports and the Census Bureau's annual March Current Population Survey. These data were analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares Regression. The data was disaggregated by gender and underemployment indicators such as percent unemployed, percent subunemployed, percent low wages, and percent low hours, were utilized to test the unemployment-crime relationship. Controls for race, age, and region were also included in this analysis, as they may influence the U-C relationship. The analysis …
Understanding The New York Rabies Epizootic 1985-2005, David Dorrell
Understanding The New York Rabies Epizootic 1985-2005, David Dorrell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Surveillance data are an important part of medical geography. These data are used to produce much of the analyses that define the subdiscipline. It is understood that surveillance data may contain biases, but there have only been limited studies devoted to determining in what ways the data are not representative of actual disease prevalence. New York was selected for this research for several reasons. First, it has a strong rabies data set. Second, it has a centralized system of licensing animal and dog control officers. Third, it is well-represented in terms of local media. This dissertation attempts to better understand …
The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson
The Urban Development Of Spanish Colonial Pensacola, 1781-1821, Harry James Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Pensacola evolved through the second Spanish period (1781-1821) from a fledgling military outpost to an increasingly complex urban center. Local and regional demographic trends and environmental conditions prompted Pensacola to grow in a manner that differed from other Spanish colonial urban centers and created in Pensacola an unusual class structure and residential patterning. The primary goal of this dissertation is to show that Pensacola’s residential and landowning patterns never experienced the degree of socioeconomic residential clustering noted in other Spanish colonial urban centers. Social residential clustering was unusual in Spanish Pensacola, and socioeconomic classes and land values varied from lot …

Psychological Effects Of Not Having Equal Rights And Privileges In The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community: Activism As An Antidote?, David E. Baker
Psychological Effects Of Not Having Equal Rights And Privileges In The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community: Activism As An Antidote?, David E. Baker
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Despite the prevalence of discrimination in American society, little is known about the effects of equal rights activism on mental health. Within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community, discrimination against marriage, adoption, employment, and other rights and privileges given to heterosexual individuals is still legal and socially accepted in most American communities. Previous research has suggested that these individuals have higher incidences of depression, anxiety, and substance use than the general population. The experience of discrimination and punishment responses learned from societal messages is believed to contribute to these clinical issues within this community. This qualitative study found that equal …
Impact Of Training On School Psychologists' Knowledge And Attitudes Regarding Children With Chronic Health Issues, Abby Baker
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Children who have chronic medical illnesses must rely on their families and schools to create an environment that allows goals in the areas of development, of academic, social, familial and life-skills to be individualized to accommodate the capabilities of each child. School psychologists are an essential part of blending a child’s needs and academic fit. Although school psychologists receive some training in child psychopathology, they lack the necessary training in the areas of acute and chronic illness, in order to work with the health care system and to collaborate with pediatricians. The emergence of the field of Pediatric Psychology in …
Clinical Treatment Provider Attitudes Toward Sexual Offender Management Within An Outpatient Treatment Center : Treatment Provider Attitude Survey, Dustan A. Barabas
Clinical Treatment Provider Attitudes Toward Sexual Offender Management Within An Outpatient Treatment Center : Treatment Provider Attitude Survey, Dustan A. Barabas
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The present study's foundation is based on research suggesting that the attitudes of clinicians regarding their clients have profound effects on therapeutic alliances, empathy, and staff burnouts, which may contribute to treatment barriers. Because professionally appropriate behavior often conceals stigma, misconceptions, and negative feelings that clinicians may have toward sexual offenders, an anonymous survey of attitudes, job burnout, and empathy was conducted in an outpatient setting. The survey instruments tap into some latent factors concerning the attitudes of clinicians, their perceptions of burnout, and their abilities to empathize with their clients. This research focused on describing a population of clinicians …

Transportability Of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy : A Case Study With Adolescents In A Residential Treatment Setting, Susanna A. Carew
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Because of the increase in the numbers of adolescents presenting in residential care, the challenge and difficulty posed to therapists in treating this age-group, and the prevalence of chronic stress and complex trauma symptoms found in this population, the research conducted was a clinical case study investigating the transportability and effectiveness of using Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), a manualized treatment format, with adolescent clients in a residential treatment setting. A doctoral candidate was trained to engage each of three residential clients in 12 individual sessions of TF-CBT. The Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), Jesness …
Analysis Of The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test In The Screening Of Clinical Depression, Karyn L. Goodwin-Tribble
Analysis Of The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test In The Screening Of Clinical Depression, Karyn L. Goodwin-Tribble
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
The Goodwin Sentence Completion Test (GSCT) was developed as a screening instrument for clinical depression. This instrument, composed of 25 sentence stems, was designed to indicate the level depression and to assess the strength of negative perceptions associated with dimensions of the cognitive triad (self, world, and future). Although the GSCT follows the typical format of most projective sentence completion tests, an objective scoring method was also constructed in order to evaluate more reliably individual results. The tool was administered to 80 adult volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 72 years of age. Volunteers were randomly selected from a …

Substance Abuse Severity, Treatment Motivation, And Criminal Thinking Factors : Predictors Of Treatment Retention With Substance Abusing Parolees In A Correctional Aftercare Program, Loretta Joan Henkel
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Substance abuse and substance dependence are complex disorders that affect millions of people in the United States. Two notable consequences of these disorders are increased criminality and higher rates of recidivism. This archival data study of 94 parolees admitted to the Day Reporting Center, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley in Camden, New Jersey examined the influence of substance abuse severity, of treatment motivation, and of criminal thinking factors on treatment retention in a correctional aftercare treatment program for parolees with a history of substance abuse or dependence. The extent to which parolees were deceptive in reporting information was also examined.
