An Experiment In Joint Product Price Optimization: Price Elasticities And Substitution Decisions Of The Hungry Barfly, Jeffrey Coursen Dec 2007

An Experiment In Joint Product Price Optimization: Price Elasticities And Substitution Decisions Of The Hungry Barfly, Jeffrey Coursen

All Theses

The subject of optimal pricing is consistently on the forefront of debate among firms in all market situations. Optimal pricing is further complicated when there are common resource inputs associated with the production of a multitude of different products. Economic theory has suggestions for pricing optimally in a variety of market conditions, from perfect competition, to perfect monopoly. This paper presents an experiment where a firm is attempting to optimally price multiple products with common cost inputs subject to monopolistic market conditions. The result supports the hypothesis of substitution amongst the product line relative to prices, as well as presents …

Thinking Critically About Rural Gender Relations: Toward A Rural Masculinity Crisis/Male Peer Support Model Of Separation/Divorce Sexual Assault, Kenneth Tunnell, Walter Dekeseredy, Joseph Donnermeyer, Martin Schwartz, Mandy Hall Nov 2007

Thinking Critically About Rural Gender Relations: Toward A Rural Masculinity Crisis/Male Peer Support Model Of Separation/Divorce Sexual Assault, Kenneth Tunnell, Walter Dekeseredy, Joseph Donnermeyer, Martin Schwartz, Mandy Hall

Kenneth Tunnell

After decades of neglect, a growing number of scholars have turned their attention to issues of crime and criminal justice in the rural context. Despite this improvement, rural crime research is underdeveloped theoretically, and is little informed by critical criminological perspectives. In this article, we introduce the broad tenets of a multi-level theory that links social and economic change to the reinforcement of rural patriarchy and male peer support, and in turn, how they are linked to separation/divorce sexual assault. We begin by addressing a series of misconceptions about what is rural, rural homogeneity and commonly held presumptions about the …

Validity Of Two Selected-Item Short Forms Of The Wais-Iii In An Intellectually Deficient Sample, Ryan Allen, Pamala Alley, Patrick Leverett Nov 2007

Validity Of Two Selected-Item Short Forms Of The Wais-Iii In An Intellectually Deficient Sample, Ryan Allen, Pamala Alley, Patrick Leverett

Ryan A. Allen

Various short forms of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Third Edition (WAIS-III; D. Wechsler, 1997) have been investigated, but limited information is available regarding the usefulness of any WAIS-III abbreviation with intellectually deficient individuals. Our study compared the validities of two WAIS-III selected-item short forms in a sample of 59 individuals with full scale IQs (FSIQs) of 79 or lower. The performance of both short forms was adequate, but the results gave a consistent edge to an adapted version of the Satz–Mogel (1962) short form in comparison to the abbreviated form by J. H. Wymer, K. Rayls, and M. T. Wagner …

Swahili Expressive Arts Digital Media Collection, Rebecca Gearhart

Rebecca Gearhart

The Swahili Expressive Arts collection represents the research and scholarship of Professor Rebecca Gearhart, Ph.D., Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Illinois Wesleyan University. Professor Gearhart has worked with members of the community of Lamu, Kenya for twenty years, and in this collection she has selected images that represent aspects of Swahili ceremonial life on the northern coast of Kenya. The Swahili Expressive Arts collection is meant to be a possible starting point for student and scholar research on some of the Sufi-inspired practices that contemporary Swahili communities in the Lamu archipelago and adjacent mainland carry on into the present.

The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg Nov 2007

The Moral Dimension Of Children’S And Adolescents’ Conceptualisation Of Tolerance To Human Diversity, Rivka Witenberg

Rivka T Witenberg Dr

This study examined the kinds of justifications children and adolescents used to support tolerant and intolerant judgements about human diversity. For the tolerant responses, three main belief categories emerged, based on the beliefs that others should be treated fairly (fairness), empathetically (empathy) and that reason/logic ought to govern judgements (reasonableness). Fairness emerged as the most used belief to support tolerant judgements and the most commonly used combination of beliefs was found to be fairness/empathy, linking tolerance to moral reasoning, rules, and values. Specifically noticeable was that 6 to 7 year olds appealed to fairness more often in comparison to the …

Temporal Organization Of Eating In Low- And High-Saccharin-Consuming Rats., Nancy Dess, J. Richard, S. Fletcher-Severe, C. Chapman Nov 2007

Temporal Organization Of Eating In Low- And High-Saccharin-Consuming Rats., Nancy Dess, J. Richard, S. Fletcher-Severe, C. Chapman

Nancy K Dess

When, where, and how much animals eat are influenced by food scarcity and risk of predation. The present study concerned the mediation of risk-related feeding patterns by emotion. Occidental Lowsaccharin- consuming (LoS) and High-saccharin-consuming (HiS) rats, which differ in both ingestion and emotionality, were studied in three steady-state paradigms: an “open economy” procedure (discrete session cyclic-ratio operant schedule) and two “closed economy” procedures (meal patterning, free feeding with running wheel access). Cyclic-ratio performance showed better defense of stable food intake against variable cost among LoS rats. In closed economies, LoS rats consumed a larger number of smaller meals and showed …

La Política Monetaria Y Su Impacto Sobre Los Retornos Reales Del Mercado Bursátil Chileno, Jorge Muñoz, Claudio Recabal, Andres Acuña Nov 2007

La Política Monetaria Y Su Impacto Sobre Los Retornos Reales Del Mercado Bursátil Chileno, Jorge Muñoz, Claudio Recabal, Andres Acuña

Andrés A. Acuña

In this article we examined and tested the effects of monetary policy driven by Central Bank of Chile over the Chilean stock market's real returns for monthly data which spans between I.1996 and XII.2006. Based on a theoretical background, we analyzed the monetary policy from the monetarist and Keynesian points of view, their schemes and economics results. Once we analyzed the stock market in detail, from a sectorial perspective, we applied a GARCH (1, 1) model as a framework, in order to measure the impact that monetary policy has over the Chilean stock market's real returns under an inflation targeting …

The Information Commons: Arena For Innovation [Invited Speaker], Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

Do libraries innovate?  Is there a “library sandbox" where innovative ideas are being tested?

In the ALA Editions book "Transforming Library Service through Information Commons: Case Studies for the Digital Age" a strong case is made for the Information Commons as an arena for library innovation.  (Donald R. Beagle, Preface, "Transforming Library Services Through Information Commons")

Today's presentation examines the Information Commons as an arena for testing innovative ideas in technology, staffing, and scope of service delivery. It also traces the evolution of the Information Commons as it has been driven by changes in user needs, pedagogical theory, technology, and society …

Toward An Understanding Of Risk Factors For Anorexia Nervosa: A Case-Control Study, Ruth Striegel Weissman Nov 2007

Toward An Understanding Of Risk Factors For Anorexia Nervosa: A Case-Control Study, Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Background Prospective, longitudinal studies of risk factors for anorexia nervosa (AN) are lacking and existing cross-sectional studies are generally narrow in focus and lack methodological rigor. Building on two studies that used the Oxford Risk Factor Interview (RFI) to establish time precedence and comprehensively assess potential risk correlates for AN, the present study advances this line of research and represents the first case-control study of risk factors for AN in the USA.
Method The RFI was used for retrospective assessment of a broad range of risk factors, while establishing time precedence. Using a case-control design, 50 women who met DSM-IV …

Sanislow, Anthony Pinto, Mary C. Zanarini, Thomas H. Mcglashan, John G. Gunderson, Maria T. Daversa, Carlos M. Grilo

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

The authors examined the relationship between ethnicity and treatment utilization by individuals with personality disorders (PDs). Lifetime and prospectively determined rates and amounts of mental health treatments received were compared in over 500 White, African American, and Hispanic participants with PDs in a naturalistic longitudinal study. Minority, especially Hispanic, participants were significantly less likely than White participants to receive a range of outpatient and inpatient psychosocial treatments and psychotropic medications. This pattern was especially pronounced for minority participants with more severe PDs. A positive support alliance factor significantly predicted the amount of individual psychotherapy used by African American and Hispanic …

The information seeking behavior of academic scientists is being transformed by the availability of electronic resources for searching, retrieving, and reading scholarly materials. A census survey was conducted of academic science researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to capture their current information seeking behavior. Nine hundred two subjects (26%) completed responses to a 15-minute Web-based survey. The survey questions were designed to quantify the transition to electronic ...

Ecosystem-Based Management Of Terrestrial And Coastal Water Resources: Can Rapanos Teach Us Anything About The Future Of Integrated Water Management, Chad J. Mcguire Nov 2007

Ecosystem-Based Management Of Terrestrial And Coastal Water Resources: Can Rapanos Teach Us Anything About The Future Of Integrated Water Management, Chad J. Mcguire

Chad J McGuire

The purpose of this article is to describe aspects of the Rapanos decision, focusing on the Kennedy concurrence, and then suggesting its connection to the ongoing policy debate regarding coastal resource management, and how it may offer a sign of the judicial will to accept an expanding federal role over centralized water management, regardless of spatial location.

The aim of this work is to analyze and reflex about the reputation model in the finitely repeated Prisioners’ Dilemma and its applicability in the dupoly’s market. This work, also considerers the conditions under which each player, in the Cournot Duopoly, have the optimal strategy for cooperation in each stage of the game finitely repeated. Results point out that in spite of its limitations, the cooperation can arise and holding up as a result of three basic conditions: payoffs, strategies and the probability of being rational. We think that diverse modifications can be aggregated at this structure for do it …

The People's Plan For Overcoming The Hurricane Katrina Blues - Summary, Michelle M. Thompson Nov 2007

The People's Plan For Overcoming The Hurricane Katrina Blues - Summary, Michelle M. Thompson

Dr. Michelle M. Thompson, GISP, FRGS

The Peoples’ Plan is a strategic action plan for the recovery of the 9th Ward. We’ve created it based on conversations with residents – some struggling to return home, others intent on remaining in a neighborhood that has always been there own. The Peoples’ Plan provides a thorough assessment of what must be done to provide recovery in one of the hardest hit areas of the City, and provides a recovery model for all badly flooded areas. Our Plan seeks to transform the 9th Ward as it is rebuilt. The proposed transformation will be resident-driven and will provide improved employment …

Does Patient-Centered Care Affect Racial Disparities In Health?, Catherine Putnam Slade Nov 2007

Does Patient-Centered Care Affect Racial Disparities In Health?, Catherine Putnam Slade

Public Management and Policy Dissertations

This thesis presents a challenge to policy initiatives that presume that patient-centered care will reduce racial disparities in health. Data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey were used to test patient assessment of provider behavior defined as patient-centered care according to the National Health Disparities Report of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality of the Department of Health and Human Services. Results indicated patient-centered care improves self-rated health status, but blacks still report worse health status than whites experiencing comparable patient-centered care. Further, black-white differences in patient-centered care had no affect on health status. Rival theories of black-white differences …

The Therapist's Experience Of Feeling In Too Deep With A Client: A Phenomenological Exploration, Deborah Lynn Weisshaar Nov 2007

The Therapist's Experience Of Feeling In Too Deep With A Client: A Phenomenological Exploration, Deborah Lynn Weisshaar

Psychology Dissertations

Research regarding the experience of the psychotherapist in the therapeutic interaction is uncommon in scientific literature and rarer still in the literature of the U.S. When Freud recognized the therapist’s emotional experience in response to the client, he termed it countertransference and identified it as counterproductive to the analytic process. Later it was recognized as containing potentially useful information about the client. Despite a shift in academic concern away from the clinician’s experience, outcome studies have demonstrated the importance of the therapeutic relationship. If the therapist’s experience can help or hinder the relationship and, therefore, the process of therapy, it …
