Information Fluency At California Maritime Academy: Improving Instruction With Wikis And Webpages, Anna Chang, Alysa Gerard, Michele Gibney, Joshua Kunkle, Quincy Mccrary, Brian Stovall

Michele Gibney

Collaborative learning environments can utilize Web 2.0 tools for the purpose of teaching information literacy (IL) and information and communication technology (ICT) to college students. The California Maritime Academy (CMA) Library administered IL course is used in this paper to present a Web 2.0-based lesson unit. The authors designed a plan after conducting a demographic and stakeholder analysis of CMA and adhered to standards set forth by the ACRL as well as IL/ICT competency levels. The goals included the comprehension and utilization of wiki editing and website building in group-oriented projects, wherein a "Think Model" was used as a proctoring …

Player Guild Dynamics And Evolution In Massively Multiplayer Online Games, Chien Hsun Chen, J. L. Hsieh, C. T. Sun Nov 2008

Player Guild Dynamics And Evolution In Massively Multiplayer Online Games, Chien Hsun Chen, J. L. Hsieh, C. T. Sun

Chien Hsun Chen

In the latest versions of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), developers have purposefully made guilds part of game environments. Guilds represent a powerful method for giving players a sense of online community, but there is little quantitative data on guild dynamics. To address this topic, we took advantage of a feature found in one of today’s most popular MMOGs (World of Warcraft) to collect in-game data: user interfaces that players can modify and refine. In addition to collecting data on in-game player activities, we used this feature to observe and investigate how players join and leave guilds. Data were analyzed …

A Better Life In New Shanghai?, Maura Cunningham Nov 2008

A Better Life In New Shanghai?, Maura Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

During the two years I recently spent in Nanjing as a student at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, Shanghai became an increasingly frequent choice when I needed to get away and wander the streets of China for a bit. With the introduction of CRH express train service in 2007, travel time between Nanjing and Shanghai fell to only two hours, and I rejoiced in the improved accessibility of Shanghai’s malls, restaurants, bookstores, and cultural events. However, I often found that I ended my Shanghai sojourns as eager to return to Nanjing as I had been to leave it only a day or …

The accident occurred in a hazardous area high in the mountains. The demining group involved was searching the area with two mine dog teams and collecting discovered devices, moving them to a collection area. A Review Of Qualitative Research Groups In Web 2.0 Social Networking Communities: Prepare To Be Amused, Inspired, And Even Blown Away, Maureen Duffy Nov 2008

A Review Of Qualitative Research Groups In Web 2.0 Social Networking Communities: Prepare To Be Amused, Inspired, And Even Blown Away, Maureen Duffy

The Qualitative Report

The presence of qualitative research groups on Web 2.0 social networking applications, like Facebook, has continued to grow. These groups are self organizing systems of people interested in particular aspects of qualitative research. Many of these qualitative research groups have companion internet websites and some also have companion YouTube channels, creating a very strong cyber presence. While visitors to these groups are encouraged to evaluate their quality for themselves, in general, the groups provide accessibility and good information for practitioners, students, and teachers of qualitative research alike. Most importantly, a number of these online qualitative research groups can serve as …

Gender Roles In Mrs. Doubtfire, Patrick Buranicz Nov 2008

Gender Roles In Mrs. Doubtfire, Patrick Buranicz

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Among the multitude of issues that affect us every day, Americans have long debated the effects of and reasons for differing gender roles, noting how our culture either embellishes or degrades them, while asking why, if at all, American society should or should not tamper with these roles. One major structure within society that is inevitably affected by gender roles is the family unit. Those who agree on views on family life, such as the conservative value of male breadwinners and female homemakers or the liberal view of either reversed roles or equal levels of these identities, will have a …

The primary cause of this accident is listed as a Field Control Inadequacy because the investigators concluded that there was poor command and control. The injury spread, including forehead and body, implies that PPE was not being worn at the time. The secondary cause is listed as Inadequate training because it seems that the deminer either did not know how to pinpoint a detector reading adequately or did not understand the risks of digging directly on top of the place where the detector signalled.

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Background: In the context of much literature and conjecture about the relationship of personality disorders (PD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), this paper uses longitudinal data to assess the frequency with which PD patients, and especially those with borderline personality disorder (BPD), have recurrences (for patients with lifetime histories), or new onsets (for patients without lifetime histories) of MDD. Methods: A sample of 478 PD patients received reliable repeated follow-up assessments over a period of 6 years. The rates of new onsets and recurrences of MDD in all PD patients, and in BPD patients compared to OPD patients were analyzed. …

Culture Or Adaptation: Milling Stone Reconsidered, Terry L. Jones Nov 2008

Culture Or Adaptation: Milling Stone Reconsidered, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Of interest to D. L. True throughout his career was the California Milling Stone Horizon, the artifact complex dominated by handstones, millingslabs, and crude core tools most frequently associated with the early Holocene in southern California. The basic Milling Stone pattern, identified in 1929 by David Banks Rogers in the Santa Barbara Channel and formally defined by Treganza (1950) and Wallace (1955), was brought to the attention of American archaeologists outside of California by Wallace (1954) and True (1958). Over the next 30 years, D. L. True authored a number of articles and reports on Milling Stone (Basgall and True …
