Artisans And The Marketing Of Ethnicity: Globalization, Indigenous Identity And Nobility Principle In Micro-Enterprise Development, Robin M. Chandler Jan 2008

Artisans And The Marketing Of Ethnicity: Globalization, Indigenous Identity And Nobility Principle In Micro-Enterprise Development, Robin M. Chandler

Ethnic Studies Review

As a constructed category of human difference, 'ethnicity' has given way to 'culture' in its shared genealogy in the new millennium. Public knowledge about such phenomena as 'ethnic cleansing', debates on immigration, and the use of ethnicity as both a dependent and independent variable in research and policy are central realities in the domestic and foreign policies of many nations. The social psychology of group affiliation, nationalism, and the use of ethnicity (as well as gender) in workplace diversity, or the deployment of ethnicity in electoral politics continues to perplex and complicate human social interaction.

[Review Of] Mark Christian Thompson. Black Fascisms: African American Literature And Culture Between The Wars, Bill Lyne Jan 2008

[Review Of] Mark Christian Thompson. Black Fascisms: African American Literature And Culture Between The Wars, Bill Lyne

Ethnic Studies Review

In How Bigger Was Born, Richard Wright described the political choice available to young black men like Bigger Thomas as being between communism and fascism. A plethora of recent scholarship from critics like Barbara Foley, James Smethurst, and William Maxwell has articulated the complex relationship between black and red in the first half of the twentieth century. Mark Christian Thompson's Black Fascisms begins to explore the other half of Wright's binary, tracing the uses of fascist ideology in the work of Marcus Garvey, George S. Schuyler, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston, and Richard Wright.

[Review Of] Edward Charles Valandra. Not Without Our Consent: Lakota Resistance To Termination, 1950-59, Marlon D. Sherman

Ethnic Studies Review

Although South Dakota is the home territory of many Lakota, Dakota and Nakota nations, it has often been a dangerous place to be an Indian, especially in the western half of the state, where most of the tribal lands lie. Ranchers, miners and others have a long history of trying to lay claim to those lands, using, alternately, quasi-legal and violent means.

Semantic Sensor Web, Amit P. Sheth, Satya S. Sahoo Jan 2008

Semantic Sensor Web, Amit P. Sheth, Satya S. Sahoo

Kno.e.sis Publications

Sensors are distributed across the globe leading to an avalanche of data about our environment. It is possible today to utilize networks of sensors to detect and identify a multitude of observations, from simple phenomena to complex events and situations. The lack of integration and communication between these networks, however, often isolates important data streams and intensifies the existing problem of too much data and not enough knowledge. With a view to addressing this problem, the semantic sensor Web (SSW) proposes that sensor data be annotated with semantic metadata that will both increase interoperability and provide contextual information essential for …

Bridging The Gaps: Building A University Link Tank, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Christian Barrett, James Frazier, Dale Jones, Kelly Lockeman, Brigitte Sicat, Donna Steigleder, Linda Zyzniewski

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

This project proposed a University Link Tank as a mechanism by which to build bridges between employees via a network of small groups. Participation in the Link Tank would be voluntary and open to all VCU and Health System employees. The program would be modeled similarly to the Faculty Learning Community (FLC) program, which is administered by the Center for Teaching Excellence, but it would concentrate on issues that are not specifically related to teaching. Topics will be proposed annually. The program would also concentrate on effectively utilizing existing VCU resources to resolve issues.

Age And Body Satisfaction Predict Diet Adherence In Adolescents With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Christina H. Vlahou, Lindsey L. Cohen, Amanda M. Woods, Jeffrey D. Lewis, Benjamin D. Gold

Psychology Faculty Publications

The aim of the current study was to determine whether age and body satisfaction predict dietary adherence in adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and whether older females are less adherent than younger males and females. Forty-four participants aged 10-21 with IBD were recruited. Participants provided informed consent and demographics. Body satisfaction was measured by a questionnaire and a task in which participants selected their current and ideal body image out of silhouettes depicting bodies ranging from underweight to obese. Adherence was measured by marking a 100mm visual analog scale, the 1-week completion of a dietary log, and a questionnaire …

Background: Economists believe that barter is the ultimate cause of social wealth—and even much of our human culture—yet little is known about the evolution and development of such behavior. It is useful to examine the circumstances under which other species will or will not barter to more fully understand the phenomenon. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are an interesting test case as they are an intelligent species, closely related to humans, and known to participate in reciprocal interactions and token economies with humans, yet they have not spontaneously developed costly barter.

Methodology/Principle Findings: Although chimpanzees do engage in noncostly barter, …

The Varieties Of Pathways To Dysfluent Reading Comparing Subtypes Of Children With Dyslexia At Letter, Word, And Connected Text Levels Of Reading, Maryanne Wolf, Robin Morris, Maureen Lovett, Tami Katzir, Young-Suk Kim Jan 2008

The Varieties Of Pathways To Dysfluent Reading Comparing Subtypes Of Children With Dyslexia At Letter, Word, And Connected Text Levels Of Reading, Maryanne Wolf, Robin Morris, Maureen Lovett, Tami Katzir, Young-Suk Kim

Psychology Faculty Publications

The majority of work on the double-deficit hypothesis (DDH) of dyslexia has been done at the letter and word levels of reading. Key research questions addressed in this study are (a) do readers with different subtypes of dyslexia display differences in fluency at particular reading levels (e.g., letter, word, and connected text)? and (b) do children with dyslexia identified by either low-achievement or ability–achievement discrepancy criteria show similar differences when classified by the DDH? To address these questions, the authors assessed a sample of 158 children with severe reading impairments in second and third grades on an extensive battery and …

The Interaction Of Metropolitan Area Costs And The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit: One Size Fits All?, Katie Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey P. Thompson Jan 2008

The Interaction Of Metropolitan Area Costs And The Federal Earned Income Tax Credit: One Size Fits All?, Katie Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey P. Thompson

Center for Policy Research

The Federal Earned Income Tax Credoit (EITC) contributed to increasing employment rates for single women during the 1990s. This paper expands on what is known about the labor supply response to the EITC by exploiting differences in the cost-of-living faced by potentially eligible recipients in different geographic areas. Using the 1993 EITC expansion, we demonstrate that the labor supply response varies considerably with metropolitan area cost-of-living. We identify an increase in labor force participation among single mothers of as much as 10 percentage points in the lowest cost metropolitan areas. There is no discernable participation response in metropolitan areas with …

Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon Jan 2008

Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon

Publications and Research

n July of 1966, a group of Puerto Rican migrant workers protested against police brutality and discrimination in North Collins, a small farm community of western NewYork. Puerto Rican farmworkers made up a substantial part of the population, and had transformed the ethnic, racial, and gender landscape of the town. Local officials and residents produced and reproduced images of Puerto Ricans as inferior subjects within US racial and ethnic hierarchies. Those negative images of Puerto Ricans shaped the way in which local authorities elaborated policies of social control against these farmworkers in North Collins. At the same time, Puerto Rican …

Recommended Practice In Preschool Instruction: Increasing Child Attention During Whole Group, Mauree Elizabeth Harris Jan 2008

Recommended Practice In Preschool Instruction: Increasing Child Attention During Whole Group, Mauree Elizabeth Harris

LSU Master's Theses

In a teacher-directed activity, such as whole group, children can learn new skills by following the teacher’s directions and/or model the teacher’s behaviors. The National Association for the Education of Young Children Developmentally Appropriate Practices provides several recommended practices for creating a community of learners. When teachers follow these strategies they are providing multiple opportunities to engage children (Bredekamp & Copple, 1997). When used appropriately, whole group instruction can be very effective when teaching and can be used at various times of the day. Whole group instruction builds a sense of community among the classroom. The purpose of this study …

Audience Responses And Informational Needs: Considering Diversity In Crisis Communication, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric Spence Jan 2008

Audience Responses And Informational Needs: Considering Diversity In Crisis Communication, Kenneth Lachlan, Patric Spence

EGS Content

Natural disasters, organizational crises, and acts of terrorism have received increased attention in recent years from communication scholars. A consistent theme emergent in this literature is the diversity of responses to crisis messages. Affected publics hailing from different demographic and economic backgrounds have demonstrated different interests, informational needs, and psychological and behavioral responses to crisis messages. Although this research strongly recommends the consideration of multiple publics and custom tailoring messages to their informational needs, government agencies and crisis practitioners continue to produce generalized crisis messages that do not adequately address these diverse needs. Furthermore, cultural issues that affect message responses …

Urban Branding Strategies And The Emerging Arab Cityscape: The Image Of The Gulf City, Mona Helmy Jan 2008

Urban Branding Strategies And The Emerging Arab Cityscape: The Image Of The Gulf City, Mona Helmy

Architectural Engineering

Since 1970, oil has given the Arab Gulf cities the opportunity to break regional and international records in urban development and economic growth, experiencing dramatic changes in the political, economic and socio-cultural domains, and especially in architecture and urbanism. The development of oil urbanization was shaped by the different practices of "Urban Branding" and city marketing processes. More important, "Urban branding" presents the duality of the emerging cityscape, in which the "perceived images" of the city as a tangible experience of the "urban landscape" interacts with the "brand image" of the city created by the media generated image or "urban …

Youth In India: Situation And Needs 2006-2007, Maharashtra, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips)

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Youth in India: Situation and Needs Study (Youth Study) is the first-ever subnationally representative study conducted to identify key transitions experienced by married and unmarried youth in India. While today’s youth are healthier, more urbanized, and better educated than earlier generations, social and economic vulnerabilities persist. In the course of the transition to adulthood, young people face significant risks related to sexual and reproductive health, and many lack the knowledge and power to make informed sexual and reproductive choices. Several national policies and programs formulated since 2000 have underscored a commitment to addressing the multiple needs of this group …
