Are Australia's Savings And Investment Fractionally Cointegrated?, Arusha V. Cooray, B. Felmingham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper uses an Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average (ARFIMA) process to determine if Australia’s savings and investment are fractionally cointegrated. The study finds the two series to be fractionally cointegrated implying that deviations from equilibrium are persistent.

Back To The Future For Km: The Case For Sensible Organisation, Helen M. Hasan Jan 2008

Back To The Future For Km: The Case For Sensible Organisation, Helen M. Hasan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

There are many times in our brave new web-based world that we seem to have lost the art of making common sense decisions and judgements. The current organisational environment begs an agenda for KM that rediscovers values from the past, fulfilling the promise of ‘sensible organisation’. In research over the past eight years, a great team of colleagues and I have explored various factors that contribute to the creation of intellectual, social and emotional capital in enterprises and communities, reinforcing our position that most innovative work involving new knowledge creation takes place in cooperative, self-directed teams. The proposed concept ‘sensible …

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Stop No Evil: How Do We Uncover And Combat The Loss Of Educational Opportunity For American Poor?, Sarah M. Stitzlein Jan 2008

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Stop No Evil: How Do We Uncover And Combat The Loss Of Educational Opportunity For American Poor?, Sarah M. Stitzlein

The University Dialogue

In my position paper, I will urge Americans to fulfill the promise of equal educational opportunity and to avoid further entrenchment of the cycle of poverty. Some residents of largely homogeneous New Hampshire tend to be less knowledgeable about issues of racial resegregation, because racial difference is rarely seen and cries of racial inequality are not heard. Additionally some view social class struggles as a problem of remote northern NH or of particular dilapidated cities in the south. My paper will combat these shortsighted views by foregrounding the pervasive lack of educational opportunity for local poor. This will initiate conversation …

Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson Jan 2008

Research On The Experiences Of International Graduate Students: A Selective Literature Review, Bryan M. Carson

Bryan M. Carson

In 2003, there were 586,523 international students in U.S. institutions. International students make up 13 percent of U.S. graduate students, and account for one-fifth of all doctorates. Some students remain in the U.S., while others return to their home countries. Either way, however, international students represent a very significant portion of the U.S. higher education field. Yet the literature on international graduate students is surprisingly sparse. While there are many studies of the international graduate student experience, they tend to focus mostly on language acquisition, academics, acculturation and social adaptation. There are few well-constructed theoretical, qualitative, or quantitative studies dealing …

Response Of Carbon Fluxes To Water Relations In A Savanna Ecosystem In South Africa, W. L. Kutsch, N. Hanan, B. Scholes, I. Mchugh, W. Kubheka, H. Eckhardt, Christopher A. Williams Jan 2008

Response Of Carbon Fluxes To Water Relations In A Savanna Ecosystem In South Africa, W. L. Kutsch, N. Hanan, B. Scholes, I. Mchugh, W. Kubheka, H. Eckhardt, Christopher A. Williams

Geography

The principal mechanisms that connect carbon fluxes with water relations in savanna ecosystems were studied by using eddy covariance method in a savanna ecosystem at Kruger National Park, South Africa. Since the annual drought and rewetting cycle is a major factor influencing the function of savanna ecosystems, this work focused on the close inter-connection between water relations and carbon fluxes. Data from a nine-month measuring campaign lasting from the early wet season to the late dry season were used.

Total ecosystem respiration showed highest values at the onset of the growing season, a slightly lower plateau during the main part …

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis Jan 2008

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis

Gender and Sexuality Studies

In this chapter, we explore autoethnography as a social constructionist project. We want to resist the tendency to dichotomize and instead explore how autoethnography makes connections between seemingly polar opposites. Though we see it as a sign of progress that authors desire to tease out differences in autoethnographic projects, we argue that concentrating on dichotomies is counterproductive, given that autoethnography by definition operates as a bridge, connecting autobiography and ethnography in order to study the intersection of self and others, self and culture.

After further detailing in this chapter the limits of dichotomous thinking, we sketch the meanings and goals …

Forgiveness And Prayer, Mark R. Mcminn, Heath Fervida, Keith A. Louwerse, Jennifer L. Pop, Ryan Dale Thompson, Bobby L. Trihub, Susan Mcleod-Harrison Jan 2008

Forgiveness And Prayer, Mark R. Mcminn, Heath Fervida, Keith A. Louwerse, Jennifer L. Pop, Ryan Dale Thompson, Bobby L. Trihub, Susan Mcleod-Harrison

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Forgiveness and prayer are both topics of contemporary social science research, but they are not often considered together. The present study investigates how Christian respondents portray prayer when describing the process of interpersonal forgiveness. Just over half of the respondents mentioned prayer as an important part of forgiveness at their first opportunity in a structured interview protocol. Prayer responses were coded as inward, upward, or outward, with inward prayers being the most common. The narrative descriptions of inward prayer resemble Worthington's (2001, 2003) REACH model of the forgiveness process.

Positive Coping Among Wives Of Male Christian Clergy, Mark R. Mcminn, Sarah P. Kerrick, Susan Duma, Emma R. Campbell, Jane B. Jung Jan 2008

Positive Coping Among Wives Of Male Christian Clergy, Mark R. Mcminn, Sarah P. Kerrick, Susan Duma, Emma R. Campbell, Jane B. Jung

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Clergy spouses experience various life stressors, yet many cope and function effectively in the midst of their daily challenges. Mental health professionals were asked to identify wives of male clergy who exemplify emotional and spiritual health. Nominees were contacted and interviews conducted with 25 women. Each interviewee was asked about coping with normal life stressors, stressors associated with being married to a minister, and catastrophic life events. All interviews were transcribed and coded, using grounded theory. Participants emphasized the importance of spirituality, social support, limit-setting, and healthy lifestyle choices. Implications are discussed.

A Developmental Intervention Approach To Promoting Positive Development: Pathways Of Intervention Change, Marilyn J. Montgomery, William M. Kurtines, Laura Ferrer-Wreder, Steven L. Berman, Carolyn Cass Lorente, Ervin Briones, Wendy Silverman, Rachel Ritchie, Kyle Eichas Jan 2008

A Developmental Intervention Approach To Promoting Positive Development: Pathways Of Intervention Change, Marilyn J. Montgomery, William M. Kurtines, Laura Ferrer-Wreder, Steven L. Berman, Carolyn Cass Lorente, Ervin Briones, Wendy Silverman, Rachel Ritchie, Kyle Eichas

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This paper describes work directed toward creating community-supported positive youth development interventions that draw on a developmental intervention science outreach research approach. With respect to developmental interventions, this approach focuses on creating evidence-based longitudinal change intervention strategies for promoting long-term developmental change. The paper describes three broad challenges (theoretical, methodological, and meta-theoretical) that the authors faced in their efforts to develop and implement community-supported intervention programs built on this approach. The authors describe first the theoretical challenges they addressed in developing the conceptual framework for their community-supported intervention; second, the challenge of developing and refining a methodological framework for evaluating …

Tax Reform And Charitable Giving, Seth H. Giertz Jan 2008

Tax Reform And Charitable Giving, Seth H. Giertz

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Of the $240.7 billion donated to U.S. charities in 2003, 75 percent was from individuals. Of that total, $145.7 billion was taken as itemized deductions on federal income tax returns. In addition, non-itemizers and non-filers contributed $33.0 billion – contributions that received no special tax treatment. Under current law, only taxpayers who itemize may deduct from Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) their charitable donations in determining taxable income. In recent years, a number of different proposals have been put forth that would alter the tax treatment of giving by individuals. Some plans would extend a variant of the charitable deduction to …

A Study Of Us Library Directors' Confidence And Practice Regarding Patron Confidentiality, Trina J. Magi Jan 2008

A Study Of Us Library Directors' Confidence And Practice Regarding Patron Confidentiality, Trina J. Magi

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This article reports the results of a paper survey mailed to all 213 directors of public and academic libraries in Vermont. The purpose of the study, which yielded a 71 percent response rate, was to learn how many libraries take specific measures to protect patron confidentiality other than having a written policy, to measure library directors' confidence in their own ability and that of their workers to follow confidentiality policies, and to learn what types of support directors need to better protect confidentiality.

Occupational Racial Composition And Nonfatal Work Injuries, Terceira A. Berdahl, Julia Mcquillan Jan 2008

Occupational Racial Composition And Nonfatal Work Injuries, Terceira A. Berdahl, Julia Mcquillan

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Is there an association between occupational racial composition and nonfatal workplace injuries? Guided by several labor market theories (queuing, social closure, devaluation, poor market position, and human capital), we use occupational data from the U.S. Census and Dictionary of Occupational Titles combined with individual data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to answer this question. Hierarchical generalized linear models of individuals within occupations show that there is an association between occupational racial composition and workplace injuries, but this association is only statistically significant for white men in the model controlling for relevant occupational and individual level characteristics. A 10 …
