Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz Jan 2008

Federal Government Documents: Dead Or Alive, Charles D. Bernholz

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Marcel Proust wrote “What we call our future is the shadow that our past projects in front of us.” For the federal documents universe, this is only partially correct. We should attend more to how it has felt to be documents librarians, instead of trying to reconcile the past with all those wishful digital delivery monologues. A lack of courage on our part now—or relying solely upon that handy silhouette—will jeopardize the prospect of tomorrow's federal documents and their use. That absence of daring, or the use of that crutch, will guarantee that whatever results we are handed in our …

Ebsco’S Communication & Mass Media Complete: An Appreciable Improvement Over Previous Communication Studies Indexing?, David C. Tyler, Signe Boudreau, Katharine C. Potter, Misty Redinbaugh Jan 2008

Ebsco’S Communication & Mass Media Complete: An Appreciable Improvement Over Previous Communication Studies Indexing?, David C. Tyler, Signe Boudreau, Katharine C. Potter, Misty Redinbaugh

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

In a prior edition of this study, we examined whether the established online communication studies indexes—Communication Abstracts, ComIndex, and ComAbstracts—provided a good avenue of access to the journal literature that researchers in the field cite and whether, where the current journal literature was concerned, that avenue of access might be equal or superior to that provided by large, multisubject online indexes. In this iteration of the study, we similarly address EBSCO’s new product for communication studies, Communication & Mass Media Complete.

Emperor Has No Clothes: Eu's Cyprus Challenge, Birol A. Yeşilada, Ahmet Sozen Jan 2008

Emperor Has No Clothes: Eu's Cyprus Challenge, Birol A. Yeşilada, Ahmet Sozen

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the words of the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, “membership of [politically divided] Cyprus in the European Union coupled with Turkey’s membership aspirations has seriously complicated future peace negotiations on the island.” (Hürriyet, June 16, 2006). This is a rather harsh assessment of EU’s Cyprus policy given the fact that membership in the Union would most likely create the optimal conditions for peace and stability between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Yet, EU membership of one side at the expense of the other community, seem to have created more obstacles for peace. This paper provides a critical analysis …

Christian Publishing: A Panel Discussion, Dennis Hillman, Mark Hunt, Jim Kinney, Jon Pott, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

The 2007 conference of the Association of Christian Librarians convened in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the campus of Cornerstone University. Conference planners invited representatives of four prominent Christian publishers headquartered there (Baker, Eerdmans, Kregel, and Zondervan) to participate in a panel discussion on June 13. The panelists’ 65-minute exchange is transcribed here in slightly abbreviated form. At the beginning of the discussion, panelists were asked to reflect on general trends in the Christian publishing industry. This led naturally to a lengthy conversation about the publishers’ involvement in the creation and licensing of ebooks and other digital products. Finally, panelists were …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the ownership of online news content within the broader context of diversity of news sources in the public sphere. The free flow of diverse sources of news and information is critical to democratic governance and public discourse. Research has highlighted the central role the Internet can play in facilitating this discourse and thus contributing to the political process. This research explores the diversity of news online by examining the ownership of news sources online. The project uses a qualitative case study approach and basic quantitative methods to conduct analyses of the homepages of News Corporation’s www.FOXNews.com and …

Medical Geography In Public Health And Tropical Medicine: Case Studies From Brazil, William Brennan Arden Jan 2008

Medical Geography In Public Health And Tropical Medicine: Case Studies From Brazil, William Brennan Arden

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Within the last few decades, the multitude of infrastructural and environmental changes associated with population growth, human migration, and economic development have catalyzed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious diseases worldwide. The morbidity and mortality associated with these diseases have in turn led to an increased and renewed impetus to gain a better understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, prevention, and control of these diseases in order to achieve better health and well-being, especially for underprivileged populations. Two traditionally separate fields, medical geography and tropical medicine, have recently seen complex and radical paradigm shifts in response to this global situation: …

New Paradigm Christianity And Commitment-Formation: The Case Of Hope Filipino (Singapore), Jayeel Cornelio Jan 2008

New Paradigm Christianity And Commitment-Formation: The Case Of Hope Filipino (Singapore), Jayeel Cornelio

Development Studies Faculty Publications

What does religion mean to the individual? How are people religious and what do their beliefs, practices and identities mean to them? The individual's place within studies of religion has tended to be overlooked recently in favour of macro analyses. Religion and the Individual draws together authors from around the world to explore belief, practice and identity. Using original case studies and other work firmly placed in the empirical, contributors discuss what religious belief means to the individual. They examine how people embody what religion means to them through practice, considering the different meanings that people attach to religion and …

An Atlas Of Land Entry Ports On The Canada-Us Border, Riley Jones, David L. (David Lindsay) Davidson Jan 2008

An Atlas Of Land Entry Ports On The Canada-Us Border, Riley Jones, David L. (David Lindsay) Davidson

Border Policy Research Institute Publications

In a departure from the norm, this article provides no policy analysis, but instead serves simply as a reference document. The following maps identify the names and locations of all legal land portsof-entry along the Canada – U.S. border. Each port shown here is one at which a person can directly travel by personal vehicle (or on foot) from Canadian to U.S. soil.

Initiating An Investigation Of The Border's Performance, David L. (David Lindsay) Davidson, Stacia Dreyer, Bryant Hammond

Border Policy Research Institute Publications

In recent months, two distinct projects designed to gauge the performance of the Canada – US border have been initiated. The University at Buffalo Regional Institute (UBRI) proposed the development of a “Border Barometer,” which is anticipated to be a set of metrics replicable along the breadth of the 49th parallel. UBRI is our partner in a new consortium that performs border-related research—the Northern Border University Research Consortium (NBURC)—and courtesy of a grant from the Canadian government, the NBURC is launching the Border Barometer project.

Governing Through Risk At The Canada/Us Border: Liberty, Security, Technology, Benjamin J. Muller Jan 2008

Governing Through Risk At The Canada/Us Border: Liberty, Security, Technology, Benjamin J. Muller

Border Policy Research Institute Publications

The border is not where it is supposed to be; the border is getting thicker; the border “needs a fix.” These are just a few of the sentiments one encounters with shocking regularity when discussing the Canada/US border in the Pacific Northwest, known as the Cascade Gateway, or sometimes referred to as “Cascadia”. Generally unsolicited, these comments and many others are often vain attempts to encapsulate the recent changes to this border, particularly in the post-9/11 epoch.

Geoarchaeological Investigations Along The Tambo-Ilo Coast Of Southern Peru, Louis Fortin Jan 2008

Geoarchaeological Investigations Along The Tambo-Ilo Coast Of Southern Peru, Louis Fortin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The south coast of Peru has had a long history of cultural occupancy from the Preceramic through Chiribaya periods, and into Spanish Colonial / Post-Colonial periods. Procurement and modification of lithic material was an important activity throughout each of these periods but remains an under-explored dataset for late Prehispanic and Colonial populations in the region. Analysis at the Cola de Zorro archaeological site and within the Tambo-Ilo region examined the relation cultures have with their environment through a geoarchaeological analysis of the local geology and the distribution of lithics. Surveys were completed at Cola de Zorro in the quebrada drainage, …

L'Identité Et L'Altérité Dans Les Programmes Et Quatre Oeuvres Didactiques D'Histoire Du Canada Destinés Aux Écoles Secondaires De Langue Française Du Québec : 1955-1967, Paul Franklin Buck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the manifestation of identity and otherness in the programs and four didactical works in Canadian History for French secondary schools in Quebec from 1955 to 1967. To carry out this research, a diverse number of primary and secondary sources were consulted in order to determine if the expression of identity and otherness in the programs and four didactical works in use corresponded to two forms of clerico-nationalism and to Quebec autonomism of the period. The main primary sources of this study consisted of four didactical works in Canadian History, whose textual analysis on the theme of identity …

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe Jan 2008

Library Personnel’S Role In The Creation Of Metadata: A Survey Of Academic Libraries, Adonna Fleming, Margaret Mering, Judith A. Wolfe

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

The digital age has caused the paradigm to shift in academic libraries both in terms of their collections and the roles of their personnel. As academic libraries begin to digitize objects in their collections, how and who in the library creates access to these resources has become a hot issue. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries (UNL Libraries), taskforces were formed to study metadata schemes used at UNL Libraries. The taskforces identified the various metadata schemes in use and the role of various departments within UNL Libraries in the creation of metadata. They made recommendations about how to document decisions …

Occasion-Setting By Drug States: Functional Equivalence Following Similar Training History, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2008

Occasion-Setting By Drug States: Functional Equivalence Following Similar Training History, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Three experiments examined whether a drug state serving as a positive feature for pairings between a discrete conditional stimulus (CS, 15-s light or 15-s noise) and sucrose could transfer facilitative control to a CS with which it had never been presented. To do so, a CS was paired with a sucrose reward in the nicotine (0.4 mg/kg), amphetamine (AMP, 1 mg/kg), or chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 5 mg/ kg) drug state; in separate saline sessions the CS was presented but was not followed by any reward. All three drug states facilitated responding to a discrete CS; previous studies found that this facilitation …

Collaboration Among Federal Managers: Administrative Conjunction In Faith Based And Community Initiatives, Michael Simmons Jan 2008

Collaboration Among Federal Managers: Administrative Conjunction In Faith Based And Community Initiatives, Michael Simmons

Public Affairs Dissertations

The role of government is less clear than ever in an increasingly complex world. As a result, working in government has also become more challenging. In this information driven society, government workers are asked to solve a variety of complicated problems using collaboration and networking skills. These skills help navigate within their own agency, across jurisdictions, or through the public policy partnerships with non- profit and private organizations. In general, the field of public administration faces the challenges of what Frederickson (H. G. Frederickson, 1999) calls a disarticulated state in which boundaries become less important and collaboration becomes the main …
