Law Prof Adds Hid Voice To Ongoing Conversation On Race, Hope Lewis
Law Prof Adds Hid Voice To Ongoing Conversation On Race, Hope Lewis
Hope Lewis
This essay reviews Richard Thompson Ford's 'The Race Card: How Bluffing About Bias Makes Race Relations Worse,' Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux, 2008, 388 pages. Stanford Law School Professor Richard Thompson Ford's 'The Race Card' seeks nothing less than to demarcate the line between legitimate charges of racism and those that are ill-defined or false. An impossibly ambitious task , to be sure, but Ford's wide-ranging, often maddening effort makes timely and important contributions to continuing debates on race in the United States.
Of course, no serious accusation - whether if be racism, intolerance, murder, rape, child abuse, sexual harassment, theft …

Alcohol Consumption And Health Among Elders, Michael French, Ana Balsa, Jenny Homer, Michael Fleming
Michael T. French
Purpose: This article estimates the effects of alcohol consumption on self-reported overall health status, injuries, heart problems, emergency room use, and hospitalizations among persons older than the age of 65. Design and Methods: We analyzed data from the first wave of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a nationally representative study. We used multivariate regression and instrumental variables methods to study the associations between alcohol consumption (current drinking, binge drinking, and average number of drinks consumed) and several indicators of health status and health care utilization. Results: Alcohol consumption by women was associated with better self-perceived health …

Dealing With Misbehavior At Schools In Kentucky: Theoretical And Contextual Predicators Of Use Of Corporal Punishment, David May, Timothy Mcclure
Dealing With Misbehavior At Schools In Kentucky: Theoretical And Contextual Predicators Of Use Of Corporal Punishment, David May, Timothy Mcclure
David May
To test and compare theoretical explanations of the use of corporal punishment in school, the authors examine how well county-level measures of culture, socioeconomic strain, and social capital predict the prevalence and incidence of corporal punishment in Kentucky schools. Although several variables are significantly correlated with corporal punishment use, multivariate regression analyses reveal that high socioeconomic strain and low levels of social capital are the best predictors of (a) the prevalence of corporal punishment in a county’s public school system(s) and (b) a high incidence of corporal punishment in those counties where it is practiced. Explanations and practical implications of …

Estimating The Economic Benefit Of Scuba Diving In The Similan Islands, Thailand, Sorada Tapsuwan, John Asafu-Adjaye
Sorada Tapsuwan
This article reports the results of the travel cost model using the standard and the truncated count data models to estimate the economic value of the Similan Islands, Thailand, from SCUBA diving. The estimated consumer surplus per visit to the Similan Islands using the truncated negative binomial model was US$3,233 and the economic value of the Similan Islands from SCUBA diving was estimated to be up to US$54.96 m. This study shows that, even without non-use values, coral reefs of the Similan Islands, if properly managed and maintained, will continue to have significant value to both Thai and overseas SCUBA …

The Milwaukee Historic Photos digital collection represents the start of the process of making historic photos of Milwaukee available to the public online. The photos from this collection are pulled from the Milwaukee Public Library's historic photograph collection. The entire collection includes over 20,000 photographs of Milwaukee dating from the late 19th century to present day. The current digital collection is only a small fraction of the total available photos, but is growing all the time, so stop back to see what new images become available. The photos were donated to the library by many different means. Some are family …
