In Case You Missed It: Tibet Special, Part 4, Robert J. Barnett
In Case You Missed It: Tibet Special, Part 4, Robert J. Barnett
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
There’s a nice thing about literature about modern Tibet, which is that it is wonderfully polemical. It’s not that I like polemic, which destroys lives and wreaks havoc with societies. But it does make it ever so easy to organize one’s books. So instead of tedious hours sorting them by topic or author, I can arrange my Tibet books according to two or three viewpoints, perhaps four at most. One case for the books with a China POV, some shelves for those from the exile perspective, a few for the “I was a Heroic Western Explorer and Discovered Totally Unknown …
Polishing The Dimond: Changing Spaces For Enhanced Services To The Unh Community, Louise Buckley, Eleta Exline
Polishing The Dimond: Changing Spaces For Enhanced Services To The Unh Community, Louise Buckley, Eleta Exline
University Library Scholarship
In 2007 the UNH Library orchestrated several space redesign projects to enable new services and functions within the Library and adapt to changing academic support needs. These projects included the creation of a digital imaging lab in an unused preservation workroom, and the redesign of the Government Documents Department office to accommodate the transfer of its public service desk to the IT Support Center of the new Dimond Academic Commons. Creativity and flexibility by all participants as well as a shared goal of providing the best possible service to students, faculty, and staff helped meet challenges such as tight deadlines, …

College Students’ Knowledge About Meningococcal Disease And Preferences For Health Information
College Students’ Knowledge About Meningococcal Disease And Preferences For Health Information
Florida Public Health Review
The purpose of this study was to measure college students’ knowledge about meningococcal disease, preferred sources of health information, and vaccine intentions. Participants included 519 students taking online undergraduate courses in public health. We developed and administered a brief, ten-question online survey, which was posted on BlackBoard®. Students demonstrated a high level of knowledge about risk factors for meningococcal disease, but reported a need for more information, preferably delivered through electronic media. About a third of students had received the meningococcal vaccine prior to the survey; students who lived on campus were more likely to be vaccinated. Further research is …

Creando Nuestra Salud (Creating Our Health) - Results And Findings From A Breast Cancer Education Program With Rural Hispanic Women
Florida Public Health Review
Rural Hispanic females practice breast-self exams (BSE) and other breast health screenings less than women from all other racial or ethnic groups. Questions remain as to why these women do not practice these important breast health behaviors. A qualitative design was used to assess the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and barriers to breast health activities among 288 rural Hispanic women. Results revealed that along with external barriers such as transportation and money, internal barriers (shame of being seen naked, discomfort of touching their own breasts, and lack of knowledge) had a greater effect on their practice of breast health activities. The …

China In Socal
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
We don’t usually do posts about upcoming events, but there are so many involving China Beat-related folks (either contributors or people we’ve reviewed or referred to recently) in Southern California in the next few weeks that we felt remiss not mentioning them.
First, tomorrow (nothing like starting with the present!) USC will be hosting a day-long symposium on “Hong Kong, China and the World Art System.” It features many speakers, including China Beat contributor Richard Kraus.
The UCI Center for Asian Studies, in cooperation with several other units, will be hosting Michael Meyer, author of Last Days of Old Beijing, …
