Can The Confluence Model Predict Female Sexual Aggression?, Nichole M. Clay-Valorio Sep 2008

Can The Confluence Model Predict Female Sexual Aggression?, Nichole M. Clay-Valorio

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to test the pathways of the Confluence Model of Sexual Aggression (Malamuth, Heavey & Linz, 1996) for prediction of self-reported female sexual aggression utilizing various computerized measures with college aged female participants (n = 104). The confluence model states that sexual aggression is the interactive result of two simultaneous pathways: hostile masculinity (and/or hostile femininity) and impersonal sex. It was hypothesized that a combination of either of the hostility pathways (feminine vs. masculine) and the impersonal sex pathway would predict sexual aggression. Modified versions of the Sexual Experiences Scale (SES), Coercive Sexuality Scale …

Making Sense Of Their World: Sensory Awareness And Sensory Reactivity As Predictors Of Social Interaction In Early Childhood, Cortney Anne Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to (a) test the validity of a sensory reactivity measure adapted for parents of preschool-age children, (b) examine if different modalities of sensory reactivity (i.e. smell, touch, taste, etc.) emerge together or if differing thresholds of reactivity exist between sensory modalities, (c) see how parental ratings of preschoolers' sensory reactivity are related to children's behaviors in the classroom, and (d) see if sensory reactivity bears different relationships to children's social behaviors than do other aspects of temperament. A total of 260 parents (242 mothers, 18 fathers) and 10 teachers of 260 children (131 male, …

Factorial And Construct Validity Of The Revised Short Form Integrative Psychotherapy Alliance Scales For Family, Couple, And Individual Therapy, William M. Pinsof, Richard E. Zinbarg, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The Integrative Psychotherapy Alliance model brought an interpersonal and systemic perspective to bear on theory, research, and practice on the psychotherapeutic alliance. Questions have been raised about the independence of the theoretical factors in the model and their operationalization in the Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy Alliance Scales. This paper presents results of a confirmatory factor analysis of the scales that delineated at least three distinct interpersonal factors as well as shorter versions of the three scales to facilitate their use in research and practice. The paper also presents the results of a study testing each factor's association with client …

The Great Diversion

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Allegations about money-laundering by former President Chen Shui-bian, his relatives, and his acquaintances have been front page news for three weeks, and, on some TV stations, occupy the first 30-40 minutes of the news hour. As might be imagined, this is also a hot topic on the political talk shows, day after day after day. New reports continue to surface about alleged improprieties, ranging from misusing government funds, to opening shady accounts in Swiss banks and tax havens like Liechtenstein and Aruba, to buying mansions and other properties in the U.S. The media hounds are now hot on the chase …

Segmenting Brain Tumors Using Pseudo-Conditional Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Albert Murtha, Matthew R.G. Brown, Russell Greiner Sep 2008

Segmenting Brain Tumors Using Pseudo-Conditional Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Albert Murtha, Matthew R.G. Brown, Russell Greiner

Kno.e.sis Publications

Locating Brain tumor segmentation within MR (magnetic resonance) images is integral to the treatment of brain cancer. This segmentation task requires classifying each voxel as either tumor or non-tumor, based on a description of that voxel. Unfortunately, standard classifiers, such as Logistic Regression (LR) and Support Vector Machines (SVM), typically have limited accuracy as they treat voxels as independent and identically distributed (iid). Approaches based on random fields, which are able to incorporate spatial constraints, have recently been applied to brain tumor segmentation with notable performance improvement over iid classifiers. However, previous random field systems involved computationally intractable …

Systemic Analysis Of Social Scientists Policy Research And Economic Reforms In Nigeria, Sikir Abdulsalam Sep 2008

Systemic Analysis Of Social Scientists Policy Research And Economic Reforms In Nigeria, Sikir Abdulsalam

Sikiru Abidemi Abdulsalam

Despite numerous policy research institutes, organizations and social research in Nigeria, social outputs seem to have contributed little to policy articulation and formulation process. This feeble interface between knowledge base and policy formulation reduces the latter to a subject of intuitive judgment. This paper uses a schematic analysis approach to examine the relationship between policy space, social scientist and economy performance in Nigeria. The paper found that the input of policy research which should necessarily underscore economic reforms is inadequate and not effective. These adverse weaknesses are assumed to have substantiated the economic downtrodden in Nigeria. We recommend that the …

The Continuing Cost Of Privatization: Extra Payments To Medicare Advantage Plans In 2008, Brian Biles, Emily Adrion, Stuart Guterman Sep 2008

The Continuing Cost Of Privatization: Extra Payments To Medicare Advantage Plans In 2008, Brian Biles, Emily Adrion, Stuart Guterman

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 explicitly increased Medicare payments to private Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. As a result, every MA plan in the nation is paid more for its enrollees than they would have been expected to cost in traditional fee-for-service Medicare. The authors calculate that payments to MA plans in 2008 will be 12.4 percent greater than the corresponding costs in traditional Medicare—an average increase of $986 per MA plan enrollee, for a total of more than $8.5 billion. Over the five-year period 2004–2008, extra payments to MA plans are estimated to have totaled nearly $33 billion. Although …
