The Organizational, Community And Programmatic Characteristics That Predict The Effective Implementation Of After-School Programs, Todd A. Armstrong, Gaylene Armstrong

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

To identify characteristics predicting the effective implementation of after-school programs, in-depth interviews were conducted at five sites randomly selected from a subset of 16 ACE after-school sites serving high risk youth in a southwestern city. Qualitative data from structured in-depth interviews, follow-up telephone conversations with personnel as well as researcher observations during site visits were synthesized. Data identified three constellations of characteristics associated with effective implementation: staffing, community and programmatic. Staffing characteristics included limited staff turnover and sufficient training. Community characteristics included cultural sensitivity and community integration. Programmatic characteristics included clearly defined program goals and specific program content. Researcher observations …

"Enough About You, Let's Talk About Me : Clinicians' Use Of Self-Disclosure And (Un)Conscious Awareness Of Race, Sexuality, And Gender, Sarah R. Barnett-Parker Sep 2008

"Enough About You, Let's Talk About Me : Clinicians' Use Of Self-Disclosure And (Un)Conscious Awareness Of Race, Sexuality, And Gender, Sarah R. Barnett-Parker

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How and why do clinicians choose to self-disclose (with particular attention paid to race, sexual orientation and gender)? In order to answer this questiono sixty-four participants were surveyed using a mixed-method, deductive, exploratory method. The majority of clinicians surveyed use self-disclosure in their practices and believe that it is a viable therapeutic technique. Not all of the clinicians were aware of their own social identities or the identities of their clients playing a role in their choices around self-disclosure, but some were. The three major motivations for identity-based disclosures …

Use Of Mmpi-2 To Predict Cognitive Effort: A Hierarchically Optimal Classification Tree Analysis, Colette M. Smart, Nathaniel W. Nelson, Jerry J. Sweet, Fred B. Bryant, David Tr Berry, Robert P. Granacher, Robert L. Heilbonner Sep 2008

Use Of Mmpi-2 To Predict Cognitive Effort: A Hierarchically Optimal Classification Tree Analysis, Colette M. Smart, Nathaniel W. Nelson, Jerry J. Sweet, Fred B. Bryant, David Tr Berry, Robert P. Granacher, Robert L. Heilbonner

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Neuropsychologists routinely rely on response validity measures to evaluate the authenticity of test performances. However, the relationship between cognitive and psychological response validity measures is not clearly understood. It remains to be seen whether psychological test results can predict the outcome of response validity testing in clinical and civil forensic samples. The present analysis applied a unique statistical approach, classification tree methodology (Optimal Data Analysis: ODA), in a sample of 307 individuals who had completed the MMPI-2 and a variety of cognitive effort measures. One hundred ninety-eight participants were evaluated in a secondary gain context, and 109 had no identifiable …

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla Sep 2008

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla

Social Sciences

Inspired by Stine's [1994. Extreme and persistent drought in California and Patagonia during Medieval Time. Nature 369, 546–549.] findings from Mono Lake and Graumlich's [1993. A 1000-year record of temperature and precipitation in the Sierra Nevada. Quaternary Research 39, 249–255.] tree-ring study from the southern Sierra Nevada, California archaeologists have for over a decade been investigating the possibility that prehistoric societies were noticeably impacted by severe droughts during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA; cal A.D. 800–1350). Decreased production at obsidian sources, dramatic increases in bead production, trade, and sociopolitical complexity in the Channel Islands, and subsistence changes on the central …

G7 Method For Indigo Press Calibration And Proofing, Xiaoying Rong Sep 2008

G7 Method For Indigo Press Calibration And Proofing, Xiaoying Rong

Graphic Communication

G7 is a method originally developed for calibrating commercial offset press. Instead of controlling solid ink density (SID) and tone value increase (TVI), the G7 method introduces gray balance control as the key to achieve consistent color reproduction. The gray patches are quantified by CIE L*a*b* values. Inks used in conventional offset printing and Indigo printing are different in ink/toner pigments and ink setting/drying mechanism. Based on gray balance, the G7 method is believed to be valid for calibrating digital printing and other conventional printing processes. This study focused on the quality of color reproduction with the G7 method, and …

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston Sep 2008

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston

Agribusiness

Over the past 50 years public agricultural research has contributed enormously to humanity, enabling the supply of food to grow faster than demand in spite of a rapidly growing population, income growth, and shrinking natural resources. Nonetheless, in many countries we see waning public support for agricultural R&D, especially in Africa, a diversion of research resources from farm productivity towards other agendas, and early warning signs of a slowdown in agricultural productivity. The world has continued to collectively underinvest in agricultural R&D because of domestic and international market failures associated with appropriability problems. Governments have failed to effectively address these …
