Prosperity And Inequality: Lessons From The United States, Samuel L. Myers Jr Sep 2008

Prosperity And Inequality: Lessons From The United States, Samuel L. Myers Jr

Samuel L Myers Jr

For most of the post-World War II period prior to the 1980s, the distribution of income in the United States remained remarkably stable. Measures of inequality – such as the gap between incomes of those at the top and those at the bottom of the income distribution – showed little change for nearly 40 years (Darity and Myers, 1998, p. 3). In their book, Persistent Disparity, published 10 years ago, Darity and Myers documented a contemporaneous rise in general inequality and the widening of black-white disparities in family incomes. The ratio of black to white family incomes declined from the …

On The Ethics Of Capitalism, Stanislaw Cichocki, Boguslawa Lewandowska Sep 2008

On The Ethics Of Capitalism, Stanislaw Cichocki, Boguslawa Lewandowska

Bogusława Lewandowska

The aim of the paper is to present some reflections on the ethics of capitalism – the economic, social and political system which dominates today’s world and is seen by many as the only proper system. However there existed many critics (Saint-Simon, Simonde de Sismondi, Marks) of this system who called it inhuman, unjust, exploitive etc. and who proposed alternatives for capitalism. These were then challenged by advocates of capitalism (Hayek, Mises, Berger). They criticized alternatives of capitalism and tried to prove that freedom, individualism, initiative, economic growth and wealth can be best achieved in capitalism. They admitted that capitalism …

Independent Directors And Board Control In Venture Finance, Brian Broughman Sep 2008

Independent Directors And Board Control In Venture Finance, Brian Broughman

Brian Broughman

The financial contracting literature treats control as an indivisible right held either by a firm’s entrepreneurs or by its investors. In contrast, data from VC-backed firms shows that board control is typically shared, with a third-party independent director holding the tie-breaking board seat (‘ID-arbitration’). In this article I use a bargaining game similar to final offer arbitration to model a firm’s choice of action under ID-arbitration. I show that ID-arbitration can reduce holdup by moderating each party’s ex post threat position. Consequently, ID-arbitration can lead to the efficient outcome in circumstances where alternative governance arrangements – entrepreneur control, investor control, …

The Turn To Aesthetics: An Interdisciplinary Exchange Of Ideas In Applied And Philosophical Aesthetics, Clive A. Palmer Sep 2008

The Turn To Aesthetics: An Interdisciplinary Exchange Of Ideas In Applied And Philosophical Aesthetics, Clive A. Palmer

Clive Palmer

Chapters and proceedings from an international conference on Aesthetics held at Liverpool Hope University 5th–8th June 2007. This was a wide-ranging inter-disciplinary conference which encouraged submissions from three general strands of study including; those subjects which have enjoyed a substantial history of involvement in the field such as Theology and Philosophy, those relatively new to the study such as Sports Studies and Management, and those which focus upon such applied dimensions as the Arts and Education. The overall aim of the conference was to learn from interdisciplinary debate and to encourage an exchange of ideas on research of the highest …

Commodity Exports, Invisible Exports And Terms Of Trade For The Middle Colonies, 1720 To 1775, Peter Mancall, Joshua L. Rosenbloom, Thomas J. Weiss Sep 2008

Commodity Exports, Invisible Exports And Terms Of Trade For The Middle Colonies, 1720 To 1775, Peter Mancall, Joshua L. Rosenbloom, Thomas J. Weiss

Joshua L. Rosenbloom

Economic historians of the eighteenth-century British mainland North American colonies have given considerable weight to the role of exports as a stimulus for economic growth. Yet their analyses have been handicapped by reliance on one or two time series to serve as indicators of broader changes rather than considering the export sector as a whole. Here we present new comprehensive export measures for the middle colonies. We find that aggregate exports in constant prices grew very quickly, but barely faster than population during the period under consideration. Furthermore, improvements in the terms of trade increased the colonists’ ability to buy …

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Evaluations of Community Health Worker programs consistently document improvements in health, yet few articles clearly describe the roles of Community Health Workers (CHWs) from the CHWs' perspective. This article presents the CHWs' points of view regarding the various roles they played in a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project, Poder es Salud/Power for Health in Portland, Oregon, including their roles as community organizers and co-researchers. Methods: Authors draw from an analysis of transcript data from in-depth interviews conducted with CHWs to present a description of the strategies employed by the CHWs to build leadership skills and knowledge among community members. CHWs …

Crossroads: Women Priests In The Roman Catholic Church, Victoria Rue Sep 2008

Crossroads: Women Priests In The Roman Catholic Church, Victoria Rue

Faculty Publications, Social Sciences

Since 2002 Catholic women have been ordained and are ministering to communities through the organization Roman Catholic womenpriests (RCWP). In this article, Victoria Rue, PhD, ordained a womanpriest in 2005, reflects on ecclesial structures and the theologies that underpin them. RCWP uses the titles deacon, priest, and bishop. At the same time they do not wish to replicate the hierarchical model those titles suggest. At this crossroads of the old and the new, how do the women of RCWP redefine these models and their attendant theologies and still stay within the Roman Catholic Church?

Distribution Of Wealth And Interdependent Preferences, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner Sep 2008

Distribution Of Wealth And Interdependent Preferences, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner

Economics - All Scholarship

We examine the socially optimal wealth distribution in a two-person two-good model with heterogeneous workers and asymmetric social interactions where only one (social) individual derives positive or negative utility from the leisure of the other (non-social) individual. We show that the interdependence can effectively counter-act the need to transfer wealth to low-wage individuals and may require them to be poorer by all objective measures. We demonstrate that in the presence of social interactions it can be socially desirable to keep substantial wealth inequality.

The Incidence Of Tobacco Taxation: Evidence From Geographic Micro-Level Data, Andrew Hanson, Ryan S. Sullivan Sep 2008

The Incidence Of Tobacco Taxation: Evidence From Geographic Micro-Level Data, Andrew Hanson, Ryan S. Sullivan

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper uses a recent increase in the state of Wisconsin's tobacco tax as a natural experiment to measure the economic incidence of tobacco taxation. We estimate the economic incidence of tobacco taxation using micro level data on cigarette prices collected from retail locations in Wisconsin and states that share its border. We find that Wisconsin's $1.00 increase in tobacco tax was over-shifted to consumers; they pay the entire amount of the tax as well as a premium of between $0.08 and $0.17 per pack of cigarettes. We use geo-coded data to test if the incidence of the tobacco tax …

Using An Ethnostatistical Analysis To Interpret Data: The Nike Case, Nancy E. Landrum, David M. Boje Sep 2008

Using An Ethnostatistical Analysis To Interpret Data: The Nike Case, Nancy E. Landrum, David M. Boje

Organization Management Journal

This study reviews a 1997 study released by Nike to resolve wage controversies in subcontracted Asian factories. An ethnostatistical analysis is provided to show how the application of the three levels of ethnostatistics can help us understand differing interpretations of the same data. The current analysis is evidence of the way in which context, assumptions and methodology, and rhetoric and language can influence the outcome of quantitative studies. The current study is an important methodological note because academic researchers are being called to answer important questions regarding the global operations of transnational corporations. This raises the question of our role …

European Union And The Us Trade Disputes: The Role Of The Wto, Minoo Tehrani Sep 2008

European Union And The Us Trade Disputes: The Role Of The Wto, Minoo Tehrani

Organization Management Journal

The study discusses the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in dispute resolution and examines issues influencing its effectiveness. This paper investigates the trade disputes between the US and the European Union, focusing on the agricultural sector controversies over crops, beef, and bananas in addition to the conflict over the US government decision to impose tariffs on imported low-cost steel. The final sections of the paper highlight some of the structural factors that create limitation in the role of the WTO in resolution of disputes and provide analyses with the potential of enhancing the capabilities of the WTO in …

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez Sep 2008

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez

Organization Management Journal

One path to the successful transference of knowledge is through linking concepts to students’ experience. To provide this connection, we used an experiential methodology to design an exercise called mood, emotion, and affect in group performance. This exercise provides learners with an opportunity to experience, in addition to hearing and reading about, the effects of positive and negative dispositions on a group task. We describe the design and mechanics of the exercise with practical reflections from the use of the exercise in many different environments. The paper ends with end-of-the semester student comments and instructor reflections.

Meaningful Learning In Management: Recombining Strands Of Knowledge Dna Through Engaged Dialog And Generative Conflict, David Saiia, Granger Macy, Maureen P. Boyd Sep 2008

Meaningful Learning In Management: Recombining Strands Of Knowledge Dna Through Engaged Dialog And Generative Conflict, David Saiia, Granger Macy, Maureen P. Boyd

Organization Management Journal

This paper explores how meaningful learning objectives in management classes are pursued when the focus is on classroom activities and strategies that foster transformative thought, adaptive growth, and commitment from both instructors and students to achieve meaningful learning. To this end, we offer a metaphor and a context for this approach to learning. The DNA of learning metaphor details effective pedagogical practices and encourages instructors to take a more challenging and possibly transformative approach to their course design and classroom experiences.

Training School Psychology Graduate Students To Address Regional Shortages: A Distance Learning Model, Susan C. Davies, Julie Q. Morrison, Sawyer Hunley

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Addressing the shortages of school psychologists in underserved regions of the country is critical to the profession and the communities served by its members. This article describes a school psychology satellite training program using a hybrid approach combining distance learning technologies and face-to-face classroom meetings. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of sixteen graduate students in a rural, Appalachian region of Ohio as members of the first two cohorts enrolled in the school psychology satellite program.

Managing Private College Finances In An Environment In Which Spending And Revenues Grow At Different Rates, Roger T. Kaufman, Geoffrey Woglom Sep 2008

Managing Private College Finances In An Environment In Which Spending And Revenues Grow At Different Rates, Roger T. Kaufman, Geoffrey Woglom

Economics: Faculty Publications

Recently, spending and fees at colleges and universities have been rising faster than family incomes. If this trend persists, increasing emphasis will be placed on endowments as a source of finance. This paper examines financial planning when growth rates for the sources and uses of funds differ. First, we examine concepts of "intergenerational equity" in such an environment (i.e., what is an equitable growth in comprehensive fees?) and then we show how the different concepts relate to the long-run sustainability of the institution. With differences in growth rates, long-run sustainability is a dynamic programming problem where rules of thumb such …
