Crime Networks With Bargaining And Build Frictions, Bryan Engelhardt Sep 2008

Crime Networks With Bargaining And Build Frictions, Bryan Engelhardt

Economics Department Working Papers

How does the timing, targets and types of anti-crime policies affect a network when criminal retailers search sequentially for wholesalers and crime opportunities? Given the illicit nature of crime, I analyze a non-competitive market where players bargain over the surplus. In such a market, some anti-crime policies distort revenue sharing, reduce matching frictions and increase market activity or crime. As an application, the model provides a new perspective on why the U.S. cocaine market saw rising consumption after the introduction of the “War on Drugs.”

Measuring Tax Incidence: A Natural Experiment In The Hybrid Vehicle Market, Melissa Boyle, Victor Matheson Sep 2008

Measuring Tax Incidence: A Natural Experiment In The Hybrid Vehicle Market, Melissa Boyle, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

This study measures the economic incidence of the hybrid vehicle tax credit implemented in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. By comparing hybrids to gasoline-powered counterparts as the credit is phased out and expires, we are able to isolate the impact of the credit on the market price of hybrid vehicles. We conclude that hybrid prices increase by $0.75 on average for every additional dollar of credit. Thus, the majority of the subsidy accrues to manufacturers, potentially encouraging producers to increase the variety and availability of hybrid models on the market.

2007 Nebraska Population Report, David J. Drozd, Jerry Deichert Sep 2008

2007 Nebraska Population Report, David J. Drozd, Jerry Deichert

Past Publications

This report shows annual estimates of the population for Nebraska and its counties and cities. Demographic patterns and trends, including changes in the components of population change, are illustrated. As the passage of time takes us further from Census 2000 and closer to the 2010 Census, it is important to see how official estimates show the specific changes that have been occurring at both the state and local level.

Organised Crime In Ireland: A Policy Analysis Of The Introduction Of Organised Crime To The Irish Statute Book, Elizabeth Davey Sep 2008

Organised Crime In Ireland: A Policy Analysis Of The Introduction Of Organised Crime To The Irish Statute Book, Elizabeth Davey

Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the policy process employed in the introduction of organised crime to the Irish Statute Book. Part 7 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 creates, for the first time in Irish criminal law, specific organised crime offences. This thesis examines the different definitions of organised crime that have been proffered by various academics since the 1960s and highlights the difficulties that exist in coining an all-encompassing yet specific definition for the phenomenon. The methods by which Part 7 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 became law are also scrutinised. The views of various interest groups …

Risky Business: An Examination Of Probation Officers' Attitudes Towards Risk Assessment, Michelle Richardson Sep 2008

Risky Business: An Examination Of Probation Officers' Attitudes Towards Risk Assessment, Michelle Richardson

Dissertations

Over the past ten years, the concept of risk has moved to centre stage in criminological spheres. Risk assessment and the concern for effective management of offenders while safe guarding public safety has become a core issue for criminal justice agencies. This research focuses on risk assessment and probation practice in Ireland. In particular, the attitudes of practicing basic grade probation officers' working on adult community teams in Dublin are examined to gain insight into the complexities experienced by probation officers. Specifically, the research aims to highlight the consequences of adopting standardised risk tools on probation practice. The research discusses …

Dollars For Sense: Assessing Achievement Gaps In Arkansas In The Context Of Substantial Funding Increases, Joshua H. Barnett, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Arkansas Education Reports

Over the last half century, more than forty states across the nation have experienced school finance lawsuits as a consequence of perceived and real funding gaps between rich and poor districts (Rebell, 2001). Arkansas is one such state, with a long history of school funding battles in the courts. The legal challenges began in 1983, when the Arkansas Supreme Court initially found the state's school funding system unconstitutional under the equal protection clause of the state constitution .

A Behavior Based Approach To Improving Safety In A Manufacturing Facility, Laura G. Kreager Sep 2008

A Behavior Based Approach To Improving Safety In A Manufacturing Facility, Laura G. Kreager

Modern Psychological Studies

Behavior-based safety has flourished in organizations committed to changing and improving their safety programs. Through the programs, organizations are focusing their attention on the individual behaviors of employees to decrease the number of accidents occurring within the organization; thus, improving the safety record. The current study analyzes the effect of a behaviorally based safety intervention, comprised of four components, on the number of accidents occurring at a local manufacturing facility over a time span of 18 months. Based on a timeseries analysis, using an ARIMA model, results indicated a statistically significantly reduction in the number of accidents by 75.6% (p < .05) after the implementation of the intervention.

Defining Roles In The Online Classroom To Assure Learning, Chris Ponder Ii Sep 2008

Defining Roles In The Online Classroom To Assure Learning, Chris Ponder Ii

Modern Psychological Studies

The emergence of the internet has provided the opportunity for universities to begin offering online courses. As more students seek flexibility in education delivery, the greater the need becomes for online learning, which may result in developing courses that do not promote assurance of learning. This paper will explore how assurance of learning can take place in the online courseroom by evaluating student, instructor, and instructional design readiness for online learning, as well as defining the role of how each can promote assurance of learning utilizing reflective questions.

Individual Response To Three Types Of Nonlethal Weapons, Tyrone R. Nixon, Cynthia M. Bridges, Mara S. Aruguete Sep 2008

Individual Response To Three Types Of Nonlethal Weapons, Tyrone R. Nixon, Cynthia M. Bridges, Mara S. Aruguete

Modern Psychological Studies

This study investigates behavioral reactions to three types of nonlethal weapons (NLWs) used by the U.S. military. We provided participants with simulated situations involving military use of NLWs, and asked them to predict how they would react. We found variations in response according to weapon type. In general, individuals were unlikely to aggress or disperse, although these reactions were mediated by demographic factors. It may be important for Army officials to know the behavioral effects of NLWs in order to use them effectively.

The Effects Of Acquaintance Versus Stranger Rape And Gender On Rape Myth Acceptance And Attitudes Toward Rape In College Students, Shellie Patscheck, Sharon Shears Sep 2008

The Effects Of Acquaintance Versus Stranger Rape And Gender On Rape Myth Acceptance And Attitudes Toward Rape In College Students, Shellie Patscheck, Sharon Shears

Modern Psychological Studies

This original empirical experiment assessed effects of acquaintance versus stranger rape and gender on rape myth acceptance and attitudes toward rape in college students. Participants read hypothetical scenarios depicting acquaintance or stranger rape, and then completed modified versions of Burt's Rape Myth Acceptance Scale and Feild's Attitudes Toward Rape Scale. Based on previous research, we predicted that males would demonstrate more negative attitudes and would be more supportive of rape myth acceptance than females. In addition, given the relative lack of previous literature on this topic, we predicted that the two conditions for type of rape would be different, but …

Same, But Different: Understanding Asians' Attitudes Towards Affirmative Action, Luisa J. Maun, Brian J. O'Leary Sep 2008

Same, But Different: Understanding Asians' Attitudes Towards Affirmative Action, Luisa J. Maun, Brian J. O'Leary

Modern Psychological Studies

Organizations often use affirmative action plans to increase demographic diversity, but, the success of these plans depends on employee attitudes. Attitudes toward affirmative action differ among racial groups, with Blacks having more favorable attitudes than Hispanics, Asians, and Whites (e.g., Bell, Harrison, & McLaughlin, 1997). To correct a paucity of literature that includes a large Asian American sample, Asian participants from various ethnicities, such as Indian, Filipino, and Vietnamese, (N = 181) completed several online questionnaires at surveymonkey.com about affirmative action attitudes (Attitude Towards Affirmative Action Scale), collectivism/individualism (Triandis & Gelfand, 1998) , and ethnic identity (Multigroup Measure of Ethnic …

Automatic Vigilance: Does Emotional State Affect Search Times For Positively And Negatively Valenced Targets?, Stephen Long Sep 2008

Automatic Vigilance: Does Emotional State Affect Search Times For Positively And Negatively Valenced Targets?, Stephen Long

Modern Psychological Studies

Recent research has suggested that specific emotions, such as fear, may impact visual acuity (Phelps, Ling, & Carrasco, 2006). To see if emotion can influence higher order perceptions, an affective priming visual search task (APVST) was used to examine the effect of either fear or joy on participants' ability to find an associated search stimulus. A face showing either fear or joy was presented to induce a mood state, and participants searched for either a spider or a flower in a wooded background. It was found that search times were faster for the spider, but mood induction seemed to have …

The Effect Of Psychological Skills Training On Competitive State Anxiety In Collegiate Swimmers, Shea H. Davisson Sep 2008

The Effect Of Psychological Skills Training On Competitive State Anxiety In Collegiate Swimmers, Shea H. Davisson

Modern Psychological Studies

The present study examined the effects of psychological skills training on competitive state anxiety, as measured by the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2). Participants were 60 swimmers from an intercollegiate Division III team who were randomly assigned to a control, goal setting, imagery, or relaxation group. One hour prior to the first competition of the season, participants completed the CSAI-2. Over the following 5 weeks, participants engaged in 10 sessions of psychological skills training. A control group received no training. All participants completed the CSAI-2 again, one hour prior to competition in a final swim meet. It was hypothesized that …

Very Low Fertility In Pacific Asian Countries: Causes And Policy Responses, Paulin Tay Straughan Sep 2008

Very Low Fertility In Pacific Asian Countries: Causes And Policy Responses, Paulin Tay Straughan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Only 40 years ago, population experts were still worried about a population explosion that would threaten the future of humanity. Fortunately, while population growth is currently largely under control, sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia still face massive increases with very serious potential consequences. Paradoxically, however, a new problem is emerging, with its key locus in Pacific Asia (the term used in this book to refer to Asian countries with a Pacific littoral). This problem is ultra-low fertility. Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong SAR are among the very lowest-fertility countries in the whole world, and even …

Pathways To Drug And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Detained Adolescents, Dexter R. Voisin Sep 2008

Pathways To Drug And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Detained Adolescents, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

This study recruited 559 youths from detention centers (mean age was 15.4 years; 50.1% of detainees were girls) to investigate pathways that link witnessing community violence in the 12 months before detainment to drug and sexual risk behaviors in the two months preceding detainment. Through the use of audio-computer-assisted technology, data were collected on demographics, family factors, peer influences, religiosity, witnessing community violence, and drug and sexual risk behaviors. When controlling for demographics and family variables, the authors found positive associations between witnessing community violence and drug and sexual risk behaviors. Witnessing community violence was directly linked to sexual risk …

Towards A History Of Intertextuality In Literary And Culture Studies, Marko Juvan Sep 2008

Towards A History Of Intertextuality In Literary And Culture Studies, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Towards a History of Intertextuality in Literary and Culture Studies" Marko Juvan argues that the theory of intertextuality reshaped fundamentally the understanding of influence in literature. It showed that supposedly primary sources are themselves but intertextual transformations dependent on cultural "encyclopedia." Intertextuality as a framework offers a refined terminology of forms and functions of both domestic and foreign literatures' creative reception while respecting specific linguistic and cultural spaces, traditions, and literary systems. It deconstructed the postulates of influence; for example, the concepts of author, the logic of cause and effect, and boundaries between texts. It revealed the …

Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd Sep 2008

Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Transnational Book Markets and Literary Reception in the Americas," Molly Metherd argues that the most diffuse products of transnational cultural production in the Americas come from mass media productions packaged for transnational audiences -- i.e., Hollywood films, television shows, popular magazines, product advertisements -- and that tend to homogenize messages, promote stereotypes, and simplify complex issues. However, another effort to make sense of shifting relationships in the Americas is coming from a group of US-American and Spanish American literary figures. In their fiction, criticism, journalistic work, and public statements, such authors have been responding to the covalence …
