The University of Michigan dioxin exposure study was undertaken to address concerns that the industrial discharge of dioxin-like compounds in the Midland, MI area had resulted in contamination of soils in the Tittabawassee River floodplain and downwind of the incinerator. The study was designed in a rigorously statistical manner comprising soil measurements of 29 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from 766 residential properties, selected probabilistically, in the Midland area and in Jackson and Calhoun Counties (Michigan) as a background comparison. A statistical comparison determined that the geometric mean toxic equivalent (TEQ) levels in samples from …
Paternal Involvement With Special Needs Children, Emily Lauren Furst
Paternal Involvement With Special Needs Children, Emily Lauren Furst
Masters Theses
The focus of this study is paternal involvement of fathers with special needs children. Role salience, parental satisfaction, reflected appraisals, and contextual variables were hypothesized to mediate the relationship between empowerment and paternal involvement. It was also hypothesized that financial strain would moderate the relationship between empowerment and paternal involvement, as mediated by the identity theory variables and contextual variables. The researcher additionally hypothesized that empowerment would be more important to men facing higher levels of financial strain. These hypotheses were investigated using data from the Pathways Research Project, which evaluated Tennessee’s Early Intervention System (TEIS). TEIS provides services to …
The Effects Of Defendant Race, Psychological Expert Witness Race, And Racially Salient Psychological Expert Testimony On Juror Decision Making, Lily Cheyanne (Manick) Munavu
The Effects Of Defendant Race, Psychological Expert Witness Race, And Racially Salient Psychological Expert Testimony On Juror Decision Making, Lily Cheyanne (Manick) Munavu
Dissertations
The present study examined the effects of defendant race, psychological expert witness race, the racial salience of a psychological expert witness's testimony, and modern racism on juror decisions. Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions that varied the race of the defendant (Black or White), the race of the psychological expert witness (Black or White), and the racial salience of the expert witness testimony (racially relevant or not racially relevant). Participants were asked to review the case documents of a criminal case in which the defendant was charged with battery and robbery. Participants rendered verdicts for both charges, …
Religious Orientation And Religious Coping In Adolescents With And Without A Chronic Illness, Jacqueline Beine Brown
Religious Orientation And Religious Coping In Adolescents With And Without A Chronic Illness, Jacqueline Beine Brown
Dissertations
Religion plays an important role in most people's lives and can greatly affect how individuals cope and interpret stressful situations. However, very little is known about how adolescents incorporate religion into their lives (e.g., is it central or peripheral to their lives, do they utilize religious coping). Furthermore, given the additional stressors experienced by adolescents who have a chronic illness, it is likely their religious orientations and religious coping strategies are different from their healthy peers. Thus, the present study was designed to examine the constructs in both typically developing and chronically ill adolescents. Additional constructs of hope, general coping, …
The Effect Of Writing As Exposure Therapy On Ptsd Symptoms, Daniel Scott Debrule
The Effect Of Writing As Exposure Therapy On Ptsd Symptoms, Daniel Scott Debrule
Dissertations
The majority of empirically supported treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder involve some form of exposure, which desensitizes an individual to traumarelated information. Theoretical work has suggested that the mechanism of exposure may explain the tendency for writing to lessen symptoms, and empirical evidence of writing and PTSD symptoms suggests that modifying the writing paradigm may result in better symptom relief. The present investigation aimed to compare the efficacy of an exposurebased writing intervention to the standard writing paradigm. A total of 68 undergraduates that were screened for PTSD symptoms were randomly assigned to write about their most severe trauma for …
Health Anxiety And Cognition: Chronic Awareness Of Health Concerns Or Situational Activation Of Latent Dysfunctional Assumptions About Illness?, Desmon Craig Mitchell
Health Anxiety And Cognition: Chronic Awareness Of Health Concerns Or Situational Activation Of Latent Dysfunctional Assumptions About Illness?, Desmon Craig Mitchell
Dissertations
Rationale: This study investigated if health anxious individuals have chronically aroused illness-related concerns or if these concerns remain latent, only to be activated when first primed by illness-related stimuli. To test these alternatives this study examined whether participants, with varying levels of health anxiety, differed as to their (a) performance on an emotional Stroop task that included health-related words, (b) memory tasks (free recall and recognition tasks), and (c) the participants' dream content, after either being exposed, or not exposed, to an illness-related trigger. Hypotheses: If illness concerns are chronically activated in health anxious individuals, then participants will perform worse …

Moral Rights Protection For The Visual Arts, Melissa Boyle, Debra O'Connor, Stacy Nazzaro
Moral Rights Protection For The Visual Arts, Melissa Boyle, Debra O'Connor, Stacy Nazzaro
Economics Department Working Papers
Beginning in 1979, certain states extended extra copyright protection, known as "moral rights" protection, to visual artists. Moral rights protection, which was incorporated into U.S. copyright law in 1990, ensures that works cannot be altered in a manner that would negatively impact the reputation of the artist. Using difference-in-differences regression strategies, we compare artists and non-artists in states with moral rights laws to those in states without these laws, before and after the laws are enacted. This enables us to test the impact of the laws on the behavior of artists, consumers, and policy makers. Our analysis reveals that artists’ …
Category Assignment And Relatedness In The Group Ideation Process, Jonali Baruah
Category Assignment And Relatedness In The Group Ideation Process, Jonali Baruah
Psychology Dissertations
Although many studies have investigated the effects of task related diversity on group performance, little empirical attention has been paid to the effect of the degree of relatedness of these tasks on the group ideation process. The present study provided a comprehensive test of the effects of task (category) assignment and relatedness on creativity of the interactive and the nominal groups in electronic brainstorming paradigm. A major area that has not been explored in the brainstorming literature is how groups perform when each member is assigned a unique category compared with having all the members jointly assigned with common categories. …

The Role Of Political Discourse In Conflict Transformation: Evidence From Northern Ireland, Katy Hayward
The Role Of Political Discourse In Conflict Transformation: Evidence From Northern Ireland, Katy Hayward
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article introduces this volume by constructing a model for analysing political discourse as an instrument of conflict and peace, drawing on evidence from the Northern Ireland case. It identifies three processes, or stages, in a peace process in which political discourse can play a unique and crucial role: (i) the construction of a (conceptual) framework within which negotiations can take place, (ii) the facilitation of agreement between moderate and extreme positions, and (iii) the forging of common ground. The motivating thesis of this research is that discourse analysis is a vital resource for deepening our knowledge of why, how …
“Humespeak”: The Sdlp, Political Discourse, And The Northern Ireland Peace Process, P. J. Mcloughlin
“Humespeak”: The Sdlp, Political Discourse, And The Northern Ireland Peace Process, P. J. Mcloughlin
Peace and Conflict Studies
This paper explores the vital role played by the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) in the formulation of a new political discourse and conceptual approach to the Northern Ireland problem. In particular, it shows how John Hume, party leader through the 1980s and 1990s, helped to propagate this discourse, and in doing so influenced policy-making in London and Dublin, and thinking within the republican movement. Although the paper emphasises the importance of this influence, it concludes by considering the reasons why the Ulster unionist community have remained so unreceptive to the political discourse of Hume and the SDLP.

An Examination Of The Tone System Of Fur And Its Function In Grammar, Georgianna Noel
An Examination Of The Tone System Of Fur And Its Function In Grammar, Georgianna Noel
Linguistics & TESOL Theses
This research into the tonal system of Fur and its grammatical functions began with several basic assumptions. These assumptions were based on the excellent prior research by Jakobi (1989), and Kutsch Lojenga and Waag(2000). These assumptions were: 1. Fur is a register tone language with two tones L and H. Contours on LH and HL are possible. 2. Tone makes lexical distinctions in Fur as exemplified by examples such as: 'desert' úrì 'sheep' úri 3. Tone also functions in the grammar of Fur. Tone is used to differentiate the nominative and locative forms of nouns and the attributive and predicate …
The Effects Of Daeps On The Development Of Different Types Of Students In Four Discipline Alternative Education Programs In A Large Urban District, Edward Nathaniel Randle
The Effects Of Daeps On The Development Of Different Types Of Students In Four Discipline Alternative Education Programs In A Large Urban District, Edward Nathaniel Randle
Social Work Dissertations
This quasi-experimental design described the effects of the BTEM utilized in four DAEPs in a large urban school district based on student discipline incidents, academic achievements in core course, and attendance rates. Archival data was collected from the school district's database over a three year period. The population of interest included all students who attended one of four DAEPs during the 2005-06 school year. These DAEPs were designed for first time minor offenders. Student's behavioral, academic, and attendance outcomes were analyzed for the 2005-06 school year and one year before placement and one year following placement. Descriptive, frequencies, ANOVA and …
Kachin Refugee Women's Work Identity: Narratives In Transition, Christie Ann Wright
Kachin Refugee Women's Work Identity: Narratives In Transition, Christie Ann Wright
Sociology & Anthropology Theses
My work focuses on the Kachin women's experiences of work in the American workforce in comparison to their experience of work in Burma. Through in-depth interviews with twelve Kachin women in the North Texas area, I analyze the dynamics of migration and work at the intersection of gender and class. Their experiences are both shaped by their prior middle-class status of gendered spheres of paid and unpaid work and their work experiences and expectations in America. Subsequently, they mostly draw from homeland ideas of gendered ideologies because these ideals create and enhance both women's gender and class-statuses in Burma. The …

The Return Of Russia: Energy's Superpower Or Potemkin Village?, Greg R. Bayes
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
George Kennan's prediction of the Soviet Union's downfall may have, in retrospect, jinxed Russia on the one aspect that had historically worked in its favor: time. The confluence of time and space--brought about by an emphasis on territorial expansion-had greatly aided Russia when difficulties had rendered the variable of time indispensable. When confronted by the likes of Napoleon and Hitler, for example, Russia had at its disposal the luxury of always trading space for time. Although deprived of its empire, the issue of space is not an overarching concern for a Russia that today still spans from Vladivostok to St. …

Where Was The Government? In Inquiry Into The Events Of September 11, 2001, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw
Masters Theses
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have forever changed the geopolitical landscape. Yet despite the significance of such an event, those working in the field of state crime have been reluctant to investigate the role of the United States government in failing to prevent the attacks. Utilizing the five criteria of state crime put forth by Kauzlarich, Mullins and Matthews (2003), the actions and inactions of the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Federal Aviation Administration are examined. Drawing on the testimonies of government officials …

Drug Use Sequencing And Kandel's Gateway Hypothesis, John Reid
Drug Use Sequencing And Kandel's Gateway Hypothesis, John Reid
All Theses
This thesis tests the hypothesis by Kandel (1975) that there is a specific sequence of drug use that users follow. Using the same scalogram analysis technique utilized by Kandel in her original Gateway Hypothesis study, a distinct sequence of use was discovered. This thesis is based on the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2005). This study confirmed Kandel's earlier findings in that this study determined that there is a sequence of drug use. The current study also confirms Kandel's position that licit drugs precede the use of illicit drugs. This study's findings differ from those of Kandel, however, …
Essays On Asymmetric Loss And Learning In Macroeconomic Forecasting, Sagarika Mishra
Essays On Asymmetric Loss And Learning In Macroeconomic Forecasting, Sagarika Mishra
Dissertations
My dissertation consists of three essays that answer the questions whether agents have asymmetric loss, why agents have asymmetric loss and whether agents engage in least squares learning.
In my first essay, I test the rationality of inflation forecasts from the Livingston survey using the Mincer-Zarnowitz (MZ) regression when agents have asymmetric loss. I show that the MZ regression is inappropriate when agents have asymmetric loss. I demonstrate how the MZ regression can be suitably modified to test forecast rationality when agents have asymmetric loss. When I augment the MZ regression with higher order moments of the forecasts, the rationality …

Disappointment Domains, Quality Of Life, And The Impact Of Mental Illness : An Evaluation Of Demographic Differences., Christina Lynn Adkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept of quality of life (QOL) has been the topic of many research projects, yet several clinically relevant aspects of this concept have been overlooked. Specifically, few studies have addressed the impact of such demographic variables as race and sex on the life domains that have been particularly disappointing to patients with mental illnesses. The current research project aims to contribute to the understanding of the impact these variables have on quality of life, specifically addressing the following hypotheses: (1) Domains of disappointment will vary according to race and sex; (2) Race and sex will interact to predict which …

Despite a number of programmes to prevent HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and, more generally, sexually diverse populations, gay and other homosexually active men continue to be at heightened risk of HIV and its consequences. This paper analyses some of the reasons for this situation and offers policy and programmatic recommendations to contribute to a solution. The social exclusion of MSM and transgender individuals is an overwhelming reality in the majority of countries worldwide. Although progress has been achieved in some countries, in most of the world the situation remains problematic. Present challenges to equality and …
