Theses and Dissertations

Mentoring is an intervention growing in popularity with a weak research foundation. This study combines mentoring and social skill training within a positive behavior support framework. Targeting a fourth-grade, Latino student at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders, this single-subject study looks at his ability to master a specific social skill. The mentor served to reinforce social skill learning through practicing, role-playing, and goal setting. The student was chosen using the Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders and the social skill was created using the School Social Behavior Scales that identified social skill strengths and weaknesses. Determinants Of Undergraduate Level Business School Choice In The Uk: The Role Of Research Reputation, Ibrahim Sirkeci, Richard Mannix

Ibrahim Sirkeci

This study investigates the role of research reputation in student choice of business school in the UK. Within the growing student demand globally along with increasing competition it is important to understand the value the service receivers (i.e. students) attach to the research reputation which often is a key determinant in university rankings. A review of the literature in this area revealed that little had been done on defining what was meant by research reputation and the specific role that this had on student choices in business schools. This gap in the literature formed the rationale for this study. We …

Access To Audiences As A First Amendment Right: Its Relevance And Implications For Electronic Media Policy, Philip M. Napoli, Sheea T. Sybblis Jul 2008

Access To Audiences As A First Amendment Right: Its Relevance And Implications For Electronic Media Policy, Philip M. Napoli, Sheea T. Sybblis

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

When the issue of speakers’ rights of access arises in media regulation and policy contexts, the focus typically is on the concept of speakers’ rights of access “to the media,” or “to the press.” This right usually is premised on the audience’s need for access to diverse sources and content. In contrast, in many non-mediated contexts, the concept of speakers’ rights of access frequently is defined in terms of the speaker’s own First Amendment right of access to audiences. This paper explores the important distinctions between these differing interpretations of a speaker’s access rights and argues that the concept of …

Audience Measurement And Media Policy: Audience Economics, The Diversity Principle, And The Local People Meter, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

This paper examines the policy implications surrounding Nielsen Media Research’s introduction of the local people meter (LPM) system of television audience measurement. This paper explores the diversity policy considerations that have been raised in connection with the LPM introduction and examines whether the LPM represents a legitimate threat to source and content diversity, or whether the diversity principle has been largely co-opted in support of the economic and strategic considerations of certain industry stakeholders. This paper also addresses the broader question of whether the audience measurement industry should be subjected to more rigorous government oversight.

Market Competition, Station Ownership, And Local News Andpublic Affairs Programming On Local Broadcast Television, Michael Yan, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

This study examines the relationship between competitive conditions in television markets, ownership characteristics, and commercial broadcast television station provision of local news and public affairs programming. Policymakers continue to raise questions about the relationship between ownership and market conditions and the provision of informational programming, in connection with a variety of policy areas, including ownership regulation, localism initiatives, and station public interest obligations; however, much of the research in this area is either out of date and/or methodologically flawed. This study presents the results of an analysis of a random sample of 285 full power television stations. Among the studies’ …

Out And About

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It’s been a while since we’ve done a reading round-up–here a few things we’ve been reading (and writing) on the web lately:

1. If you’ve been picking up rumblings about “soy sauce” and “push ups” and haven’t been able to sort out the details, the always savvy Sky Canaves (with Juliet Ye this time) at Wall Street Journal‘s China Blog sorts it out for you. Check out Time‘s report for the basics. As CDT reports, debates over the Wengan riots have turned to the topic of internet censorship, while EastSouthWestNorth notesthat discussions of the incident are cooling down.

2. Looking …

Ups And Zoo Atlanta: A Case Study On Corporate Social Responsibility, Karen Saghini

Communication Theses

This thesis is designed to explore consumer attitudes and behaviors toward corporations that engage in socially responsible practices. The goal of this project was to determine if there was a relationship between a company’s perceived reputation for social responsibility and attitudes and behaviors that would favorably impact the company. Specifically, the project uses a case study of UPS and its support of Zoo Atlanta to further test these relationships in a true-to-life scenario. The findings reveal implications for corporate communication efforts in two ways: first, by serving as a framework to evaluate future corporate giving programs and to better understand …

How Scholarly Is Google Scholar? A Comparison Of Google Scholar To Library Databases, Jared L. Howland, Thomas C. Wright, Rebecca A. Boughan

Faculty Publications

Google Scholar (GS) was released as a beta product in November of 2004. Since then, GS has been scrutinized and questioned by many in academia and the library field. Our objectives in undertaking this study were to determine how scholarly GS is in comparison with traditional library resources and to determine if the scholarliness of materials found in GS varies across disciplines. We found that GS is, on average, 17.6% more scholarly than materials found only in library databases and that there is no statistically significant difference between the scholarliness of materials found in GS across disciplines.

Promoting Public Awareness Of Hiv/Aids In Africa: Follow-Up To A Pilot Study, Helen O. Komolafe-Opadeji

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This is a follow-up to a study that looked at reporting on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria in the print media. The pilot study looked at the years 1990-1996 in two major newspapers. The follow-up study looked at 2000-2006 and showed a significantly higher frequency of reporting on the disease. A second part of the study surveyed a small group of senior librarians on their role in disseminating information about HIV/AIDS. Librarians can play a strong role by partnering with government, other organizations and agencies, and with researchers to be both advocates and educators.

Service Encounters, Maura Elizabeth Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The action in Amy Hanser’s Service Encounters (Stanford University Press, 2008) moves smoothly among three separate but related urban consumer settings in Harbin: the Mao-era relic of Harbin No. X department store, Sunshine Department Store, a swanky oversized shrine to the new conspicuous consumption of wealthy Chinese, and the chaotic marketplace of The Underground, where young women will literally sell the shirts off their backs when presented with the opportunity. Hanser, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, focuses on these three sites as she examines the shifts that have taken place in Chinese retail practices …

Theses and Dissertations

The Marriage Checkup (Cordova, Warren & Gee, 2001) was introduced as a brief intervention targeting couples at risk for severe marital distress. The purpose of this study was to examine married couples who participated in The Marriage Checkup for levels of individual and relational stress and severity of presenting problems recorded at intake. Differences were investigated between couples who, though initially requesting the brief Marriage Checkup, elected to continue with traditional marital therapy and couples who only participated in traditional marital therapy. The group means were compared using a structural equation model in order to account for the non-independence of …
