Being Italian American: Performing Ethnicity In Atlanta, Stephen Murray Nov 2008

Being Italian American: Performing Ethnicity In Atlanta, Stephen Murray

Anthropology Theses

What does it mean to be Italian American in Atlanta? While Italian Americans have lived in urban concentrations in parts of the United States for over a century, members of this ethnic group have been living in Atlanta only in small numbers and for a few decades. Considering theories of ethnicity and performance, this study investigates aspects of Italian American ethnicity in Atlanta. The thesis provides an ethnographic insight into what it means to be an Italian American in Atlanta.

Splitting Sexuality And Disability: A Content Analysis And Case Study Of Internet Pornography Featuring A Female Wheelchair User, Laura Carter Overstreet Nov 2008

Splitting Sexuality And Disability: A Content Analysis And Case Study Of Internet Pornography Featuring A Female Wheelchair User, Laura Carter Overstreet

Sociology Theses

General social stereotypes characterize people with disabilities as asexual, invisible, and stigmatized. Therefore, sexualizing people with disabilities becomes taboo. The goal of this study is to explore how Internet pornography depicts a female wheelchair user. Using qualitative, inductive content analysis and a case study approach, I analyze 24 images from a specific, relevant website for a theme that appears most prevalent in sexuality and disability literature, the sexuality/disability split, wherein individuals’ sexualities are not pictured, felt, or acknowledged in concomitance with their disabilities. My results indicate that a sexuality/disability split does occur to some degree, but that the subject also …

Value Added Services: Publishing Continuum At The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln, Joan Giesecke, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

During its 3 years of operations, the institutional repository at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has gathered and posted over 19,000 documents, which, together with its hosted ETD collection, make it the country’s 3rd largest IR. Usage records also indicate it is one of the busiest, as well, furnishing almost 120,000 downloads during the most recent month (October 2008).

The IR has also become the cornerstone for a bundle of electronic publishing services developed and provided by the UNL Libraries. Indeed, these services may be seen as the enablers or preconditions of the IR’s successful track record.

To facilitate and accelerate …

Autoethnography As A Never-Ending Story: A Review Of Guyana Diaries: Women’S Lives Across Difference, Laurie L. Charles

The Qualitative Report

The proliferation of autoethnographies offers scholars and writers multiple opportunities to consider the various methods of authorial positioning in qualitative research inquiry. In this article, I review Guyana Diaries: Women's Lives across Difference, by Kimberly D. Nettles, while reflecting my own choices as an autoethnographic author. Autoethnographic writing is presented as a 'never-ending story,' which may have lasting, transformative effects on those who produce it

How Much Risk Is Acceptable?, Anthony Webb, Alicia Munnell, Alex Golub-Sass Nov 2008

How Much Risk Is Acceptable?, Anthony Webb, Alicia Munnell, Alex Golub-Sass

Anthony Webb

The brief’s key findings are: The financial crisis suggests the need for a new universal tier of retirement saving to supplement Social Security and 401(k)s. If the tier were a defined contribution system, asset levels would vary with market returns and payouts with interest rates. Replacement rates would fluctuate as much as 25 percentage points – even if everyone invested in an identical target-date fund. An alternative is to guarantee a fixed return, but this return will almost always be lower than that under a target-date fund, and guarantees are not costless.

Family Sources Of Educational Gender Inequality In Rural China: A Critical Assessment, Emily C. Hannum, Peggy A. Kong, Yuping Zhang Nov 2008

Family Sources Of Educational Gender Inequality In Rural China: A Critical Assessment, Emily C. Hannum, Peggy A. Kong, Yuping Zhang

Emily C. Hannum

In this paper, we investigate the gender gap in education in rural northwest China. We first discuss parental perceptions of abilities and appropriate roles for girls and boys; parental concerns about old-age support; and parental perceptions of different labor market outcomes for girls’ and boys’ education. We then investigate gender disparities in investments in children, children’s performance at school, and children’s subsequent attainment. We analyze a survey of nine to twelve year-old children and their families conducted in rural Gansu Province in the year 2000, along with follow-up information about subsequent educational attainment collected seven years later. We complement our …

President Obama And Bretton Woods, Luke A. Nichter

Presidential Studies Faculty Articles and Research

"On the occasion of this weekend's G-20 meeting in Washington, the global economic crisis seems more entrenched than ever. Calls for the return to a Bretton Woods-like system can be heard around the world. The Washington Post has said that a new Bretton Woods 'could reform the IMF' (October 20). The Times of London has reported Prime Minister Brown's call for a new international financial architecture (November 14). Le Monde has printed favorable coverage for a 'Bretton Woods acte II' (November 14). Before getting caught up in the momentum of 'reform', the incoming administration of President-elect Obama should carefully heed …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Both the Guangxu Emperor and Empress Dowager Cixi died one hundred years ago this week (November 14 and November 15, respectively), and some of our favorite news sites and blogs have been commemorating the anniversaries, made more newsworthy by the recent revelations that Guangxu was (as has long been suspected) poisoned. Here’s a short reading guide for whodunnit (the debate continues) and further reflections:

1. NPR’s Louisa Lim on the latest theories of Guangxu’s death:

“Guangxu died just 22 hours before the 74-year-old Empress Dowager Cixi. Imperial medical records indicated that Guangxu’s death was due to natural causes. But even …

Watching Our Backs: Community Verification Of Digital Preservation Systems, John Mark Ockerbloom Nov 2008

Watching Our Backs: Community Verification Of Digital Preservation Systems, John Mark Ockerbloom

John Mark Ockerbloom

Librarians and faculty agree that information preservation is one of the essential roles of libraries. Yet, as the information we manage increasingly becomes digital, we have to rely on new methods of preserving this information that have not been fully tested. While developing and auditing for best practices is important, we must also verify that preservation systems actually perform as we hope they will, preferably long before we have to fall back on them.

In this talk, I will show ways in which this verification can be done now, by the community, with reasonable cost and demonstrable efficacy. Specifically, I …

What's Fair Is Fair? Role Of Justice In Family Labor Allocation Decisions, Constance Gager Nov 2008

What's Fair Is Fair? Role Of Justice In Family Labor Allocation Decisions, Constance Gager

Department of Family Science and Human Development Scholarship and Creative Works

The theoretical basis on which wives and husbands in the United States evaluate the fairness of the division of household labor is explored. Based on distributive justice theory, separate interviews with wives and husbands are conducted to identify and define the household inputs or contributions that are valued as well as the underlying justice principles that guide household labor allocations. The findings suggest considerable variation in the value placed on household chores and the underlying justice principles used when allocating housework. Gendered expectations also play an important role in these allocations.

Digital Collections Task Force Report, Barbara Lewis, Brian Falato, Richard Bernardy, Pete Reehling, Ilene Frank Nov 2008

Digital Collections Task Force Report, Barbara Lewis, Brian Falato, Richard Bernardy, Pete Reehling, Ilene Frank

Barbara Lewis

Libraries, museums, archives, and similar institutions worldwide are digitizing their physical collections and creating born‐digital resources, all in an effort to make them accessible to people everywhere. The digitization program at the University of South Florida Tampa Library has been active since the mid 1990s. Today it is expected that, as the Library proceeds with its ARL collections initiatives, the demands on this program will increase dramatically.

In order to meet these new demands, changes are necessary to increase the productivity and capacity of the operations and to improve the accessibility and visibility of the collections. These challenges and their …
