9. Authors’ Response To Vieth, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

In 2007, Lamb, Orbach, Hershkowitz, Esplin, and Horowitz published in Child Abuse & Neglect a review of empirical research on the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) Investigative Interview Protocol in which they provided extensive research supporting the conclusion that the NICHD Protocol “comprises a useful and usable set of guidelines that allow trained interviewers to conduct investigative interviews that hew more closely than they otherwise would to universally endorsed professional guidelines” (p. 1212).

19. Young Children’S Competency To Take The Oath: Effects Of Task, Maltreatment, And Age., Thomas D. Lyon, Nathalie Carrick, Jodi A. Quas

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined maltreated and non-maltreated children’s (N = 183) emerging understanding of ‘‘truth’’ and ‘‘lie,’’ terms about which they are quizzed to qualify as competent to testify. Four- to six-year-old children were asked to accept or reject true and false (T/F) statements, label T/F statements as the ‘‘truth’’ or ‘‘a lie,’’ label T/F statements as ‘‘good’’ or ‘‘bad,’’ and label ‘‘truth’’ and ‘‘lie’’ as ‘‘good’’ or ‘‘bad.’’ The youngest children were at ceiling in accepting/rejecting T/F statements. The labeling tasks revealed improvement with age and children performed similarly across the tasks. Most children were better able to evaluate ‘‘truth’’ …

What Is The Probability Your Vote Will Make A Difference?, Andrew Gelman, Nate Silver, Aaron S. Edlin Dec 2008

What Is The Probability Your Vote Will Make A Difference?, Andrew Gelman, Nate Silver, Aaron S. Edlin

Aaron Edlin

One of the reasonable motivations for voting is that one vote can make a difference, as Edlin, Gelman, and Kaplan [2007] showed. In a presidential election, the probability that your vote is decisive is equal to the probability that your state is necessary for an electoral college win, times the probability the vote in your state is tied in that event. We computed these probabilities a week before the 2008 presidential election, using state-by-state election forecasts based on the latest polls. The states where a single vote was most likely to matter are New Mexico, Virginia, New Hampshire, and Colorado, …

Determinantes Estructurales De La Productividad De Los Servicios A Empresas En Eu, Henk Lm Kox, George Van Leeuwen Dec 2008

Determinantes Estructurales De La Productividad De Los Servicios A Empresas En Eu, Henk Lm Kox, George Van Leeuwen

Henk LM Kox

The paper investigates the structural factors that affect labour productivity performance in European business services. We estimate the productivity frontier for eight business services sectors and five size classes. Subsequently, we explain the distance of firms to the productivity frontier (X-inefficiencies) and scale efficiency by market structure characteristics, entry- and exit intensity, and national regulatory features. The frontier is assessed both by parametric and by nonparametric methods on a data panel for 13 EU countries. We find that scale effects are important in business services; firms with less than 20 employees experience substantial scale-related productivity disadvantages. Productivity performance of firms …

Fat Bloom Development And Structure-Appearance Relationships During Storage Of Under-Tempered Dark Chocolates, Dr. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Alistair Paterson, Mark Fowler, Joselio Vieira Dec 2008

Fat Bloom Development And Structure-Appearance Relationships During Storage Of Under-Tempered Dark Chocolates, Dr. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Alistair Paterson, Mark Fowler, Joselio Vieira

Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa

Fat bloom development and associated changes in microstructure, texture, appearance and melting properties were studied. Dark chocolates varying in particle size (PS) (D90 of 18, 25, 35 and 50 µm) were processed and pre-crystallised to under-temper regime. Bloom was induced by storing products under ambient conditions (18 ± 2 °C, RH 50%) and changes in texture, surface whiteness, gloss and melting properties evaluated on cooling and after every 24 h in storage until reaching asymptotic values. Microstructure of products were characterised during blooming using stereoscopic binocular microscopy. Measurements on texture and surface whiteness showed initial rapid increases with consequential reductions …

Comparison Of Rheological Models For Determining Dark Chocolate Viscosity, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Alistair Paterson, Mark Fowler, Joselio Vieira Dec 2008

Comparison Of Rheological Models For Determining Dark Chocolate Viscosity, Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Alistair Paterson, Mark Fowler, Joselio Vieira

Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa

Parameters in chocolate rheology, namely shear viscosity and yield stress, are important in manufacture and directly influenced by product particle size distribution (PSD) and composition. The Casson model was the standard confectionery industry strategy to quantify rheological properties of molten chocolate until in 2000, the International Confectionery Association recommended the use of interpolation data to describe viscosity. The two strategies are compared and correlated in defining rheological properties of molten dark chocolates prepared using different PSD, fat and lecithin content. Rheological parameters were determined using a shear rate-controlled rheometer and data examined using correlation, regression and principal component analyses to …

Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre Dec 2008

Women Head Of The Village Councils And Water Borne Diseases, Ambrish A. Dongre

Ambrish A Dongre

This paper examines the relation between prevalence of water- borne diseases and gender of the head of the village councils by exploiting a `natural experiment' in local governance in India. A constitutional amendment in early 1990s ensured that only women could be the head in at least one- third of the village councils selected randomly. Utilizing a unique sample survey, we show that having a woman as the council head seems to have no effect on the prevalence of water borne diseases. But if we look into the sub- categories of the women council heads, we find that the women …

Diasporas And Development: Perspectives On Definitions And Contributions, Piyasiri Wickramasekara Dec 2008

Diasporas And Development: Perspectives On Definitions And Contributions, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

The paper addresses an important aspect of the current migration and development debate - the role of diasporas and transnational communities as contributors to the development of their origin countries. He shows that diaspora definitions, estimates of diaspora numbers and conceptualising their contributions are very much inter-related.

In the first section, the author reviews different definitions of diasporas and transnational communities. He then provides some statistical information and estimates available on diaspora communities in different regions of the world with some discussion of their profiles. The diversity of the diaspora is examined in terms of age and skill profiles, length …

Towards The Integration Of Social Media With Traditional Information Systems, Michael J. Rees, Peta J. Hopkins

Peta Hopkins

This paper was inspired by the authors’ personal experience of using social media systems over the last two years. During that time both authors have used a range of public, private and hosted social media systems for their professional activities and well as for personal use. They and other colleagues are convinced that a unified approach to social media systems can benefit the communications processes within our institution and our interaction with our important existing and potential clients, the students and alumni.

Nigeria And The Perennial Problem Of Governance: Explaining State Failure In The Midst Of Abundant Resources, Omololu Toluwanimi Omololu Dec 2008

Nigeria And The Perennial Problem Of Governance: Explaining State Failure In The Midst Of Abundant Resources, Omololu Toluwanimi Omololu

Omololu Michael FAGBADEBO

Nigeria’s abundant wealth is sufficient to make it one of the effective states in the African continent. However, the excess resources, like the sugar in the blood stream of a diabetic patient, serve no positive purpose for the teeming population. Poverty and hunger are the principal characters of the Nigerian state with attenuated crises affecting the socio-economic well - being of the people. While Nigeria ranks among the highest producers of crude oil in the world market, it also leads in the classification of countries in distress. Corruption and mismanagement of the abundant resources, coupled with the insatiable appetite of …

Therapeutic Intervention: Using Sensory Gardens To Enhance The Quality Of Life For Children With Special Needs, Hazreena Hussein Dec 2008

Therapeutic Intervention: Using Sensory Gardens To Enhance The Quality Of Life For Children With Special Needs, Hazreena Hussein

Hazreena Hussein

This study investigates the design and use of sensory gardens in two special schools by evaluating their functional zones and how they are utilized, especially by children with special educational needs, and the staff who care for them. Preliminary site studies were undertaken in fourteen sensory gardens around the UK, followed by more detailed data collection at two case-study sites. The research aim was to find out the behaviour settings and issues that are common in sensory gardens. The research data collection included in-depth interviews, observation and behaviour mapping, which was used in conjunction with affordance theory. Drawing on Moore …

Evaluating The Extent And Nature Of 'Envelope Wages' In The European Union: A Geographical Analysis, Colin C. Williams Dec 2008

Evaluating The Extent And Nature Of 'Envelope Wages' In The European Union: A Geographical Analysis, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

To evaluate the spatialities of the illegal wage practice where employers pay their declared employees both an official declared wage and an undeclared ‘envelope’ wage so as to avoid tax liabilities, a 2007 survey conducted in 27 European Union (EU) member states is reported. The finding is that 5% of employees received envelope wages which amount on average to some two-fifths of their wage packet. Revealing how, although heavily concentrated in a small group of East-Central European nations, this wage practice is nonetheless ubiquitous, the paper concludes by discussing how this practice might be tackled.

Overall Trade Specialization And Economic Development: Countries Diversify, Luca De Benedictis, Marco Gallegati, Tamberi Massimo Dec 2008

Overall Trade Specialization And Economic Development: Countries Diversify, Luca De Benedictis, Marco Gallegati, Tamberi Massimo

Luca De Benedictis

This paper provides evidence for an aspect of trade often disregarded in international trade research: countries’ sectoral export diversification. The results of our semiparametric empirical analysis show that, on average, countries do not specialize; on the contrary, they diversify. Our results are robust for different statistical indices used to measure trade specialization, for the level of sectoral aggregation, and for the level of smoothing in the nonparametric term associated with per capita income. Using a generalized additive model (GAM) with countryspecific fixed effects it can be shown that, controlling for countries’ heterogeneity, sectoral export diversification increases with income.

The Darker Side Of Travel: The Theory And Practice Of Dark Tourism, Philip R. Stone Dec 2008

The Darker Side Of Travel: The Theory And Practice Of Dark Tourism, Philip R. Stone

Dr Philip Stone

Over the past decade, the concept of dark tourism has attracted growing academic interest and media attention. Nevertheless, perspectives on and understanding of dark tourism remain varied and theoretically fragile while, to date, no single book has attempted to draw together the conceptual themes and debates surrounding dark tourism, to explore it within wider disciplinary contexts and to establish a more informed relationship between the theory and practice of dark tourism.

This book meets the undoubted need for a such a volume by providing a contemporary and comprehensive analysis of dark tourism.
