Assessment And Treatment Of Fire-Setters, Rebekah Doley, Katarina Fritzon Oct 2009

Assessment And Treatment Of Fire-Setters, Rebekah Doley, Katarina Fritzon

Rebekah Doley

Extract: I am malicious because I am miserable. -Frankenstein, Mary Shelley Within clinical literature there has been an assumption that the above quote typifies a large proportion of individuals who deliberately commit arson. In other words, that psychological disorders of some kind can be found in the majority of such persons (Geller, Fisher, & Moynihan, 1992). For example, early conceptualisations of the condition pyromania meant that any individual who set more than one fire was considered to suffer from an 'irresistible impulse'- merely for the fact that they did not resist the impulse to set a fire. Now, however, a …

Does The Journal Impact Factor Help Make A Good Indicator Of Academic Performance?, Sudhanshu K. Mishra

Sudhanshu K Mishra

Is journal impact factor a good measure of research merit? This question has assumed a great importance after the notification of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2009 on September 23rd 2009. Now publication of research papers/articles in reputed journals has become an important factor in assessment of the academic performance of teachers in colleges and universities in India. One of the measures of reputation and academic standard (rank or importance) of a journal is the so-called …

The Relationship Between Physical Inactivity And Family Life Course Stage, Margo J. Hilbrecht, Suzy L. Wong, Judith D. Toms, Mary E. Thompson Oct 2009

The Relationship Between Physical Inactivity And Family Life Course Stage, Margo J. Hilbrecht, Suzy L. Wong, Judith D. Toms, Mary E. Thompson

Health over the Life Course Conference (2009)

Physical inactivity is a well-documented risk factor for numerous chronic diseases and a major public health problem in Canada. Since social-ecological models suggest that behaviour is influenced by the person as well as the social and physical environment, it is important to be sensitive to other factors when examining physical activity participation. The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between physical inactivity, marital status and family stage for men and women in Canada.

The study was based on data from the Canadian Community Health Survey, Cycle 2.1, for adults aged 18-64 living with a spouse or partner …

Public Policy, Gender, Marriage, And Self-Rated Health, Sean Clouston, Amélie Quesnel-Vallée Oct 2009

Public Policy, Gender, Marriage, And Self-Rated Health, Sean Clouston, Amélie Quesnel-Vallée

Health over the Life Course Conference (2009)

Married people live longer than those who remain single both in Canada and the USA, with men showing the most gain from marriage. The benefit to marriage has been exlpicated in four different ways: marital benefits, with protective benefits going mostly to men; negative selection, with sicker individuals seeking healthcare from their spouses in a health-poor policy environment; clean-up for marriage, whereby mostly male risky behaviors are left behind prior to marriage; and positive selection, suggesting instead that the marital selection process is tied to health indicators evident in social circumstances. The importance of social policy to these realms is …

Projecting Family Support Needed To Assist Older Canadian Living In The Community, 2006-2031, Janice M. Keefe, Yann Décarie, Patrick Charbonneau, Jacques Légaré

Health over the Life Course Conference (2009)

Canadian policy makers are increasingly interested in planning for the inevitable increase in home care services that will be fuelled by population aging and community care policy. Our goal is to advance understanding of the patterns and predictors of disability and support among the population aged 65+ and use this information to project future health human resources. Using the 2002 General Social Survey, logistic regressions estimated the probability of an individual with specific characteristics of having a specific level of disability and those with a long term health problems using one of three types of support networks (formal, informal, or …

Supporting The Curriculum With Digital Collections, Thomas Farrell

Staff publications, research, and presentations

This presentation is based on our university's experiences creating two collections of digital items for classroom use. Each of these collections has entailed collaborating with a partner outside the university community, as well as faculty within the university, and each has presented a different set of opportunities and challenges. The first example is a collection of videos digitized from VHS tapes, composed of interviews with survivors of the 1939-1945 Holocaust. These are being used as source materials for students, who create themed A/V essays from edited portions of the). The second example is a set of sacramental mission records spanning …

Response To “Islamic Fundamentalism: An Ignored Specter In The Xinjiang Riot”, Mark Elliott

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China Beat has run several pieces recently on the Xinjiang riots. On October 2, we featured Rian Thum’s “The Ethnicization of Discontent in Xinjiang,” which argued that the riots had raised ethnic tensions in the region. A few days later, we published “Islamic Fundamentalism: An Ignored Specter in the Xinjiang Riot,” written by Liang Zheng. Zheng argued that the foreign media had ignored indications that the riots were instigated by fundamentalists from southern Xinjiang, an argument that preserves the notion of ethnic harmony in Urumqi itself.

Today we run a response to Zheng’s argument from Mark Elliott, Professor of Chinese …
