Making A Weak Link Stronger: Incorporating Information Literacy Into A Semester-Long Freshman Seminar, Tammy Sugarman, Anne Page Mosby
Making A Weak Link Stronger: Incorporating Information Literacy Into A Semester-Long Freshman Seminar, Tammy Sugarman, Anne Page Mosby
Tammy Sugarman
The freshman seminar, GSU 1010, is our campus’ response to the national trend to facilitate students’ transition from high school to college. Fall semester 2000 was the second year that Georgia State University offered new students the option of registering for a freshman seminar, and the first year that librarians participated as instructors. Our motivations for teaching this course were twofold: to move beyond the traditional “one-shot” library instruction class by teaching the same set of students for the entire semester, and to incorporate information literacy objectives into the three credit semester long course. This paper is a case study …

Libraries have often been early adopters of new technologies. But, until the 1960s and the beginnings of the computer age, these technologies and bibliographic tools were limited in their ability to effect wide-scale resource sharing.

Although the collection is not developed for the general public and community users, they may benefit from the collection for their information needs. The main focus …
Community-Based Suicide Prevention Research In Remote On-Reserve First Nations Communities, Corinne A. Isaak, Mike Campeau, Laurence Y. Katz, Murray W. Enns, Brenda Elias, Jitender Sareen
Community-Based Suicide Prevention Research In Remote On-Reserve First Nations Communities, Corinne A. Isaak, Mike Campeau, Laurence Y. Katz, Murray W. Enns, Brenda Elias, Jitender Sareen
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
Suicide is a complex problem linked to genetic, environmental, psychological and community factors. For the Aboriginal population more specifically, loss of culture, history of traumatic events, individual, family and community factors may also play a role in suicidal behaviour. Of particular concern is the high rate of suicide among Canadian Aboriginal youth. While the need to develop interventions to reduce suicidal behaviour for First Nations on-reserve populations is evident, there may be an element of distrust of researchers by Aboriginal communities. Furthermore, research in mental health and specifically suicide is much more sensitive than studying medical illnesses like diabetes. Clearly, …

Estimating The Economic Gains For States As A Result Of Medicaid Coverage Expansions For Adults, Peter Shin, Leighton C. Ku, D. Richard Mauery, Brad Finnegan, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
This policy research brief examines the Medicaid eligibility expansions under the pending legislative proposals, including the House Tri-Committee bill, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee bill and the Senate Finance Committee bill. Using new Census Bureau data, the researchers find that under both the House and Senate Finance Committee proposals, about 9.6 million nonelderly adults would gain Medicaid eligibility by 2014. Furthermore, the federal and state expenditures are less than Medicaid's positive impact on the economy amounting in a return of three dollars in new business activities for every dollar of state Medicaid investment. Because Medicaid is designed …

Peking University students queue to see the jingoistic new film ‘The Founding of a Republic’. In the screening, the young audience seemed more interested in the Chinese movie stars who appear in the film than they were in the historical content itself. Real footage of Chairman Mao in 1949, however, drew enthusiastic applause. Peking University students queue to see the jingoistic new film ‘The Founding of a Republic’. China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Now that the celebration is over and China has celebrated its 60th anniversary, we thought we would point out some of the National Day media coverage that caught our eye:
1. China Digital Times directed us to The Guardian, which posted this wonderful time-lapse video of the parade in Beijing; watch the day’s highlights in under four minutes!
2. Yale University’s Kang Zhengguo wrote this piece for the New York Times op-ed page, in which he reflects on his own National Day experiences over the span of five decades. While Kang marched as a Young Pioneer in the 1959 National …

The Effects Of Joint Physical Custody On Fathers And The Father/Child Relationship, Evan Shopper
The Effects Of Joint Physical Custody On Fathers And The Father/Child Relationship, Evan Shopper
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was conducted to better understand how, following divorce, fathers and the father/child relationship are affected by joint physical custody (JPC). Specifically, how does the post-divorce family system, altered and defined by JPC, influence the father's adjustment to the divorce and his subsequent relationship to his children? While there has been considerable research focusing on noncustodial fathers and those with joint legal custody, few studies have qualitatively examined the impact of JPC on men and the father/child relationship. The study used a semi-structured, one-hour interview to capture the subjects' specific language through an interactive method. Eleven men were interviewed …
Islamic Fundamentalism: An Ignored Specter In The Xinjiang Riot, Liang Zheng
Islamic Fundamentalism: An Ignored Specter In The Xinjiang Riot, Liang Zheng
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
It’s been three months since the city of Urumqi was plunged into chaos and terror by the deadliest ethnic bloodletting in the history of the People’s Republic. The riot on July 5th this summer erupted right after a mostly peaceful demonstration organized by Uyghur youths in Urumqi called to demand the government thoroughly investigate a brawl in southern China, which had left two Uyghur workers dead and dozens more injured. At that point, no one anticipated the demonstration would be followed by a horrible massacre in Urumqi that took at least 197 innocent lives, most of them members of the …
