Revisitando A Teoria Geral Dos Partidos De Maurice Duverger, Paulo S. Peres Oct 2009

Revisitando A Teoria Geral Dos Partidos De Maurice Duverger, Paulo S. Peres

Paulo S. Peres

The Quiet Man ... And Beyond: Reflections On A Classic Film, John Ford And Ireland, Seán Crosson Dr., Rod Stoneman Oct 2009

The Quiet Man ... And Beyond: Reflections On A Classic Film, John Ford And Ireland, Seán Crosson Dr., Rod Stoneman

Seán Crosson

In 1996, The Quiet Man topped an Irish Times poll for the best Irish film of all time. Almost ten years later, with many more Irish (and Irish-themed) films made, The Quiet Man still occupied number four in a poll of 10,000 people across Ireland. John Ford's greatest commercial success, the film also set a template for Ireland's representation, and promotion, for over half a century. This book, The Quiet Man ... and Beyond, involves both critical analysis of aspects of The Quiet Man as myth, commodity and fetish and the celebration of a film that has sustained considerable academic …

Youth Restiveness And Violence In Nigeria: A Case Study Of Youth Unrest In Ebiraland, Marietu S. Tenuche

Marietu S Tenuche (PhD)

The youth in Nigeria are involved and in most cases are in the vanguard of violent conflicts that have occurred in different parts of the country. The study specifically examined the role of the youth in the intermittent bursts of violent that erupts in Ebira land North Central Nigeria. The study suggested possible remedies of this growing tendency. This descriptive research was carried out essentially through an analysis of relevant texts, documents and Research and Government Reports on the subject matter. How Different Are Service And Manufacturing Firms In The Informal Sector? (Short Note), Mohammad Amin Oct 2009

How Different Are Service And Manufacturing Firms In The Informal Sector? (Short Note), Mohammad Amin

Mohammad Amin

A comparison of service and manufacturing firms in the informal sector shows that service firms are larger in terms of total sales and also generate more output per worker. They rely less on physical infrastructure and machines but more on human capital. Service firms also appear to be better integrated with the financial system with access to finance being less of an obstacle to their business. Some of the commonly held reasons for not registering such as taxes that registered businesses have to pay and benefits from registering such as better access to government programs appear to be less important …

Repression And Punishment In North Korea: Survey Evidence Of Prison Camp Experiences, Marcus Noland Oct 2009

Repression And Punishment In North Korea: Survey Evidence Of Prison Camp Experiences, Marcus Noland

Marcus Noland

The penal system has played a central role in the North Korean government's response to the country's profound economic and social changes. Two refugee surveys--one conducted in China, one in South Korea--document its changing role. The regime disproportionately targets politically suspect groups, particularly those involved in market-oriented economic activities. Levels of violence and deprivation do not appear to differ substantially between the infamous political prison camps, penitentiaries for felons, and labor camps used to incarcerate individuals for misdemeanors, including economic crimes. Substantial numbers of those incarcerated report experiencing deprivation with respect to food as well as public executions and other …

Uncertainty, Pay For Performance, And Asymmetric Information, Felipe Balmaceda Assoc Prof. Oct 2009

Uncertainty, Pay For Performance, And Asymmetric Information, Felipe Balmaceda Assoc Prof.

Felipe Balmaceda

This article develops a new rationale for the emergence of pay-for-performance contracts where the labor market is competitive, workers are risk averse, and firms are risk neutral and unaware of workers’ productivities. The article shows that the prevalence of pay for performance rises and the pay-for-performance sensitivity falls as environmental uncertainty increases. This empirical regularity is unaccounted for alternative models such as the standard agency model. (JEL D86, L2, M5, J3)

Smoking And Psychological Health In Relation To Country Of Origin, Michael Lyvers, Tessa Hall, Mark Bahr Oct 2009

Smoking And Psychological Health In Relation To Country Of Origin, Michael Lyvers, Tessa Hall, Mark Bahr

Mike Lyvers

In English-speaking, Western-Anglo countries, where smoking has become stigmatized in recent decades as a result of widespread anti-smoking campaigns, smokers commonly report poorer psychological health on average than non-smokers do. This may be indirectly related to the strong pressures to quit in such countries, as poorer psychological health is associated with a reduced likelihood of quitting, thus leading to a selection bias for smokers with relatively poorer psychological health. In the present study, 147 smoker and non-smoker participants either came from Western-Anglo countries where smoking has become stigmatized (Australia, Canada, U.S.) or countries in regions where smoking remains relatively more …

The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook Of Tennessee, Alan H. Wallace Oct 2009

The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook Of Tennessee, Alan H. Wallace

Alan H. Wallace

From the SEMLA report of the conference: Alan Wallace of the University of Tennessee gave a presentation on "The Amazing J. Lawrence Cook of Tennessee" that encouraged attendees to broaden their thoughts on the nature of artistic creation and recorded music. J. Lawrence Cook was a composer and arranger who throughout the course of his life created between 15,000 to 20,000 piano rolls for player pianos. Wallace discussed how the piano roll was the most common medium for recording and replaying music in an era before the widespread use of the phonograph and argued that the jazz music Cook cut …

Klipsun Magazine 2009, Volume 40, Issue 01 - Fall, Jennifer Oato

Klipsun Magazine

When I was a kid, I always wished I was older. My friends and I would play games pretending we were ‘grown-ups.’ I was sure I would be an actress, living in a mansion in Malibu, with a wonderful husband—all because the game ‘M.A.S.H’ told me so. My mother used to say, “Trust me, Jen. When you’re older, you’ll wish you were young again.”

The games I played as a child were full of imagination and innocence. There were no dating games or addictions to games, and playing ‘make-believe’ did not automatically stereotype you as a nerd. It seems to …

Assess, Improve, And Share: Using Libqual+Tm To Provide A Quick And Easy Assessment For Accreditors, Administrators, And Users, Eric Forte

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessment in academic libraries is more important than ever as we strive to satisfy users, administrators and accreditation agencies, and present data to inform ongoing and future strategic directions. LibQUAL+TM yields a substantive set of quantitative and qualitative data that is relatively fast and easy to analyze, and is especially useful when significant skills and time to conduct meaningful assessment may not be present, such as in smaller academic libraries. Communicating the results and responses of assessment to stakeholders is a vital aspect of assessment and may in itself be indicative of the likelihood to enact positive change based on …

Making Your Library More Delicious, Ellie Dworak Oct 2009

Making Your Library More Delicious, Ellie Dworak

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sometimes there are too many new words floating around. And sometimes, the same old words have new, perplexing meanings. So it is with "social bookmarking" and "delicious." I thought I had the bookmarking thing down—I save things that I like so that I can get back to them again, right? And I know what it means to be social—that’s what I do on Saturday night after I’ve recovered from the work week. But what are the two of them put together? And what is this thing called "Delicious?" This column will cover those topics and give you a toolkit for …

International Arbitration: A Comparative Study Of The Aaa And Icc Rules, Igor M. Borba Oct 2009

International Arbitration: A Comparative Study Of The Aaa And Icc Rules, Igor M. Borba

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Arbitration has been used throughout history as an alternative dispute resolution method with great success. Today, arbitration is commonly used in international trade related disputes as one of the most common dispute resolution methods. In this thesis I will examine some of the most important international treaties and laws that regulate this dispute resolution method, such as the New York Convention, Uncitral Model Law, as well as the Federal Arbitration Act. The two main international arbitration institutions are the main focus of this thesis. The international arbitration rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and the International Chamber of Commerce …

Interview With Funeka Sihlali, Renell Schubert

Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement

Length: 92 minutes

Oral history interview of Funeka Sihlali by Renell Schubert

Ms. Sihlali begins by describing her childhood in King William’s Town when the Apartheid regime was instituted, living in government housing with her family in a single-room house with no bathroom, sharing a toilet with four other households. She explains having to learn the customs which were different from that in her home, for example, to look at African elders was a sign of disrespect, but outside of the home, she had to learn to make eye contact with white people to keep them from seeing her as …
